Purpose of the Assignment: For nursing students to gain insight into the work a community/public health nurse performs when entering into a new community. Assessment of the population is the first step in the overall process. The framework that will be used to gather data for purposes of this course is Dreher and Kemp (2011).

Goal: Each student will complete the cultural or health topic assigned and relate it to the City of Worcester. Based on the data collected, each students will give a 10 minute presentation on the assigned date and provide a written paper (3 page limit excluding charts and/or other statistical graphs) that will be handed in at the end of the presentation. The oral presentation is worth 6 point and the paper is worth 6 points for a total of 12 points, which will be a part of your final grade in Community Health Nursing.

Helpful Hints:  Read chapter 3 and the section in Dreher and Kemp (2011) chapters 4 or 5 where your topic is found. All of the assigned community cultural and health assessment topics have suggested areas of where to search for relevant information. Please feel free to explore other areas beyond the suggestions if you feel it will be helpful to cover your topic. Each topic has suggested activities to help you focus your presentation. It is generally helpful to display data in graph form to help the audience appreciate inferences and salient points. The epidemiological triangle is another graphic that may be helpful to display your results. You may use the computer to display your graphics but you may not give the entire presentation using power point slides. Making the presentation interactive is always a positive way to engage the intended audience.

~APA (6th edition) format is expected. Remember senior nursing students will have points deducted from the final grade for poor spelling, grammar, and other APA formatting errors.

I am the facilitator during this power point. We met to discuss the power point and who was going to do what. We also research for the presentation and got information. A lot of communication went on for this power point and as a team communication plays a big part with our team because we all work and have different schedules and some of us are married meaning that we can only meet during certain hours. We did our first group meeting at UOP and also through text and emails.

We talked about the high and lows that a person goes through, although that seems funny the high from cocaine is an all time high but the low is in fact so low it can deteriorate your life and kill you. What stood out to me is how common this drug is used and it come to no surprise because I’m aware of what it does to the user and also how it destroys families, but the negatives do not seem to out weigh the positives with this drug. During our meeting we talked about how famous people such as Tim Allen, Whitney Houston, Thomas Edison, Chris Farley, Len Bias and the list goes on all had deaths relating to cocaine use. Not only were they effected but also their family and we saw Whitney’s daughter fall in the same footsteps of her mother and even died of a drug overdose. Cocaine use is also more common and how its portrayed in movies, to music, and how frequently you see celebrities busted with it I feel it is becoming almost socially acceptable and this is a problem.

Introduction
This lesson will look at three theories on cognitive development. The first theory we will discuss is Piaget’s. Piaget believed that children actively construct their development by adapting their existing knowledge to new situations. We will look at how this unfolds in Piaget’s four stages of development. We will then look at quite a different aspect of cognitive development in the second theory by Vygotsky. Vygotsky believed that cognitive development is mediated by sociocultural factors, and that the zone of proximal development refers to what children can achieve with and without help. The third theory we will look at is information-processing. Information-processing compares our minds to computers, and concentrates on cognitive processes, memory, reasoning and problem-solving. Finally, we will look at how our minds differ from computers because of our awareness of what we know and how we know – an awareness known as metacognition.

INSPIRATION FOR THEORY
In the first lesson, we briefly touched on Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive development. Piaget’s work on cognitive development began when he was working on IQ tests for children. He noticed that children of the same age got the same questions wrong, and that the answers of different age groups differed systematically from one another. Piaget then began studying cognitive development by giving young children problems to solve, and observing their behavior as they tried to solve these problems, and by giving older children problems to solve, and asking them to explain their thinking processes.
