Question descriptionResearch Paper – Annotated Bibliography Instructions

An annotated bibliography is a bibliography covering all the different articles found on a specific topic with a summary of the given research. Locate at least 8 sources related to your research topic and create an annotated bibliography. Each of your sources must be academic (from a scholarly journal) and recent (written within the last 5 years). IMPORTANT: Include at least 5 empirical articles. Use correct and current APA format for the citations and for the summaries of the articles. DO NOT use the article’s abstract as your summary; you must read the article and summarize it yourself. Review the instructions for the Research Paper – Final for more information about the requirements for your research paper. Wikis and blogs are not acceptable sources for this assignment.

EXAMPLE:

Rand, D. C. (1997). The spectrum of parental alienation syndrome (part I). American Journal of Forensic Psychology, 15(3), 1–8.

Deidre Conway Rand, a forensic psychologist, traces the history of what Dr. Richard Gardner termed Parental Alienation Syndrome. Rand states in his article that Gardner coined the term Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS) in the mid-80s after over 10 years of working with children in high-conflict divorces. Since Gardner’s contribution to civil forensics, there has been much debate as to the accuracy of PAS. Rand describes the problems and the contributions that have followed Gardner’s suggestion of PAS. He summarizes by clarifying that PAS is a developing concept in forensic psychology and that courts are abusing the terminology.

Teen Pregnancy Prevention

Teen pregnancy is a common societal crisis hence a national priority to prevent it. It is caused by engaging in risky and irresponsible sexual behaviors due to peer pressure impacts. Recent research shows that approximately 50% of students in high school engage in sexual acts leading to unplanned pregnancies or marriages. The percentage of blacks who give birth by the age of 20 years is alarming at 1 in 4 as compared to the whites at 1 in 10. Community based organization in collaboration with the federal government have put up initiatives to minimize the rates so as to encourage completion of school for a sustainable economy (Sieving, 2011). Teen pregnancy prevention strategies are classified into five main strategies that are community related according to the current research.

Programs associated with teen pregnancy prevention have been implemented and notable improvements witnessed in the U.S. First, community mobilization and sustainability involves empowering all members in the society to take action and embrace change. This is achieved by dissemination of information, generating support and promoting cooperation. Second, there are evidence based programs to the teens to show them that irresponsible sex habits lead to sexually transmitted diseases, risky sexual behaviors and teen pregnancy which are costly to manage. Third, there is the increment of youth access to contraception and reproductive health care services (Klaus, & Saunders, 2016). This should be teen friendly from the clinical partners to encourage the youth of prevention measures.

Fourth, stakeholder education targets teen parents, civic leaders and other community members on strategies to reduce teen pregnancy like improved communication and utilization of resources in the society to cater for teen’s needs (Frick, 2007). Fifth, it is essential to work with diverse communities in an effort to educate on the relationship between teen pregnancy and social determinants of health. Teens ought to be taught that abstinence is the best option since contraceptives like IUDs, pills and even condoms do not guarantee one of not contracting sexually transmitted diseases.

QUESTION 1
The “theory-practice gap,” as some have called it, has prevented our profession from full utilization of its knowledge base in practice, and has impeded the view of nursing as a theoretically based discipline, to its detriment. There are distinctly different viewpoints to this argument, based on the different perspectives of academics and theoreticians on the one hand and that of practitioners on the other. Being honest about your reaction, and applying critical thinking skills to the question, where do you stand on the issue, and why?
QUESTION 2
Barriers have existed, especially in the past, which have impeded the work necessary to develop the knowledge base of nursing. Many of these barriers are related to issues of gender and knowledge in a female-dominated profession like nursing. What are your views on the way in which gender has inhibited our growth as a knowledge-based profession and the view others have of our professional status?
QUESTION 3
Conduct a literature search based on Barbara Barnum’s discussion of the theory elements of content, context, and process. Pick one of these and discuss how it may be applied to your own practice.
QUESTION 4
The development of the discipline of nursing has gone through many stages of philosophical debates. Justify the relevance and utility of the knowledge of theory development to your practice.

A special focus of this course is executive communications that are succinct, strategic, and supported. Accordingly, your initial post should not exceed 500 words in the discussion forums. Follow-up posts should not exceed 300 words.
Select any one of the following starter bullet point sections. Review the important themes within the sub questions of each bullet point. The sub questions are designed to get you thinking about some of the important issues. Your response should provide a succinct synthesis of the key themes in a way that articulates a clear point, position, or conclusion supported by research. Select a different bullet point section than what your classmates have already posted so that we can engage several discussions on relevant topics. If all of the bullet points have been addressed, then you may begin to re-use the bullet points with the expectation that varied responses continue.

  • The training and development model is a cycle that starts with evaluating needs, then developing responses or interventions, then, conducting the response, and evaluating the results. The evaluation output becomes input for a new evaluation phase. How well does your current organization follow the model? In other words, does your organization perform ongoing needs assessment, design appropriate interventions, and provide continuous feedback to develop individuals, teams, leaders, and the organization? If your organization does, what evidence do you see that the training and development cycle is having a positive effect? If your organization doesn’t, what reasons might exist for such failure? In both cases (whether your organization does or does not follow the training and development cycle), how could training and development be improved? Leadership lessons you can learn?
  • Multiple intervention activities are possible to address training and development needs. Examples include on-the-job training and role-playing. Describe some of the intervention activities used by your organization. What has worked well? What has not worked well? What should your organization consider using? What other possible methods (besides what was provided in the lecture) are available to use?
  • Have the leaders for whom you have worked utilized a strengths-based or weaknesses-based approach to feedback, performance review, and/or coaching? Provide an example of how a leader has used one or the other approach. How did the leader’s strengths- or weaknesses-based approach impact your performance, your emotions, and/or your development? What lessons can you learn for your own leadership performance?
  • In your own personal and professional development, have you focused more on your strengths or on your weaknesses? How has that approach impacted the way you feel about yourself, and how has it impacted your performance? Can you identify one used or realized strength (remember, it needs to be something that energizes you . . . not just something that you do well)? How can you use that strength more? Can you identify one unused or unrealized strength? How might you start to use that strength? Can you identify one learned behavior (something that you do well but which de-energizes you)? Can you identify one weakness? How might you manage the learned behavior and weakness so that you do not become de-energized? In essence, how might you articulate a development plan for yourself?

Case One

Mary Stokes is in need of a kidney transplant, and her parents and siblings have been tested for compatibility. Her father is afraid of operations and knows that kidney trouble runs in the family. Before the test, Mary’s father tells the doctor that he does not want anyone, especially his wife, to know that he is compatible. He explains that if the family knows they will pressure him into being a donor. The father turns out to be the only one who is compatible. Mary asks the doctor, “Are you sure no one in my family is compatible?”

Is the father a patient and protected by confidentiality? Even if he is not a patient, is his explicit request, which was not refused, a protection of his confidentiality? If the matter is confidential, what can the physician say or do to protect the secret?

Case Two

Dr. Curious has a habit of wandering around the hospital and looking at the records of friends who are in the hospital. The nurses have tried to stop him, but he has retaliated by making their lives miserable and belittling them in public at every opportunity. The nursing administration has been notified but has done nothing, as it wants to avoid rocking the boat.

What are the nurses’ ethical obligations after they have done everything mentioned in the text? See Chapter 2 (Garrett). Is “not wanting to rock the boat” a sufficient excuse for the administration to do nothing further?
