Explain the occurrence of birth defects?

How can you explain the occurrence of birth defects (caused by altered genes) in children and
grandchildren of WWII atomic bomb victims, when the victims themselves were only mildly
affected?
B.
During the past 50 years, more than 200 species of insects that attack crop plants have become
highly resistant to DDT and other pesticides. Based on what you have learned in this class
regarding evolution, explain the rapid and widespread evolution of resistance. Now that DDT has
been banned in the US, what do you expect to happen to levels of resistance to DDT among
insect populations?

Reflect on what informs your judgment: commitment to advance care planning, analysis of facts, and/or political party loyalties?

How do you judge Palin’s quote? [“And who will suffer the most when they ration care? The sick, the elderly, and the disabled, of course. The America I know, and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama’s death panel, so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their level of productivity in society, whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil.] Effective strategy
to oppose Democrats’ plans for health care reform or unethical scaremongering?
I think her strategy was both unethical and excessive, but it was effective.
She used false, unsubstantiated statements to affect a key health issue that
would have benefited a lot of patients.  The bill would have allowed Medicare to pay for optional doctor’s visits to discuss living wills and end of life issues with their physicians (Mason, 2016).  As a member of Congress, she and her family are afforded a higher level of health insurance that is effective for life after serving 6 years.  Due to her statements all references to end of life planning were deleted from the bill.
Reflect on what informs your judgment: commitment to advance care planning, analysis of facts, and/or political party loyalties?
I tend to be loyal to my political party but only if the facts support what I think is right.  I believe we should all be afforded the right to discuss end of life issues and living wills and have it covered by our insurance and not have our families burdened with these decisions on their own.
Is it right for nurses to endorse health reform legislation even if the legislation is not perfect? Does this apply to the recently failed American Health Care Act?
There is no perfect legislation so there must be some compromise.  I think nurses should endorse legislation if it is for the improvement of health care and in the best interest of the patients and nursing practice.

Discuss the importance of the guiding principles of self-management, empowerment and advocacy in the collaborative management of the patient and his family.

Discuss the importance of the guiding principles of self-management, empowerment and advocacy in the collaborative management of the patient and his family.

Task
This part of the assessment task requires you to develop a nursing care plan for the patient in the provided case study. In order to do this, you will need to consider the role of the interdisciplinary team and registered nurse in the management of this patient.

In addition to a brief introduction and conclusion, Part B of your report should include:
A discussion of the importance of the guiding principles of self-management, empowerment and advocacy in the collaborative management of the patient and his family.
A discussion of the role of the registered nurse in the acute medical ward in the management of this patient and his family including an analysis of the ways in which the registered nurse could collaborate with other members of the interdisciplinary team to co-ordinate the provision of comprehensive nursing care to the patient and his/her family. This may include care that may be required when patient returns home.
A nursing care plan that contains five (5) nursing interventions that would be appropriate for the patient at this stage of his presentation.
Each intervention must be supported by a rationale that explains at least one or all of the following: how it will address the underlying pathophysiology, how it is keeping with the guiding principles discussed in your report and/or how it is consistent with current best practice.
Your report must adhere to academic writing conventions. Sub-headings may be used, but dot points and tables should not be included in your report.
You should support your discussion with a MINIMUM 12 recent (LESS THAN 7 years old) and credible sources. Credible sources include, peer reviewed journal articles, text-books, evidence summaries, best practice guidelines, government documents, health facility clinical guidelines and policies/procedures and websites containing content aimed at health professionals. Please note that lecture slides will not be considered to be appropriate sources for this assessment task.
PLEASE NOTE that you can and should refer to any relevant information from Part A of your report without needing to repeat it in this assessment item. For example, “as discussed previously in Part A of this report….”

Case Study for Part B

Luigi develops an ulcer on his right leg that will not heal despite oral antibiotics and becomes infected, causing cellulitis to develop over his lower right leg. He is unable to walk unaided. His diabetes remains poorly controlled due to poor understanding and compliance with his diabetic diet as his wife does all the cooking. As a result his renal function is deteriorating. He is admitted to hospital for IV antibiotics, stabilisation of his diabetes and care of his worsening leg ulcer. He is commenced on sliding scale insulin titrated to his BGLs whilst in hospital and IV Ceftriaxone. He is extremely upset that he has to remain in hospital as his son is away and his wife is home alone.

Rationale
It is known that chronic disease is the leading cause of death across the world (Johnson & Chang, 2014). Nurses need to be able to provide care to all health consumers, with a significant role in assessing a person, planning care, communicating with colleagues and ensuring that the holistic needs are met and evaluated. The ongoing nature of the conditions can result in longer term debilitating outcomes if not addressed appropriately. Children, young people, adults and older adults all experience the full range of health issues yet manage them differently.

This assessment task addresses the following subject learning outcomes:
Plan nursing care for patients with complex co-morbidities demonstrating rationale for how one affects the other.
Plan nursing care of a patient with a co-morbidity in consultation with individuals/groups significant others and the interdisciplinary health care team in the clinical setting
Collaborate with the interdisciplinary health care team to provide comprehensive nursing care in the clinical setting
Evaluate and reflect on their own ability to implement strategies to lead teams and care coordination

Topics for Assignment Two

General instructions: Write a paper of about 750 words, including a Works Cited if appropriate.

In Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, King claims the church is a “weak, ineffectual voice with uncertain sound.” Do you agree? Should the church be involved in political issues? In this country we have separation of church and state, so is it possible to have a strong church telling its members what to do?

Here is the Letter from Birmingham Jail

My Dear Fellow Clergymen:
While confined here in the Birmingham city jail, I came across your recent statement calling my present activities “unwise and untimely.” Seldom do I pause to answer criticism of my work and ideas. If I sought to answer all the criticisms that cross my desk, my secretaries would have little time for anything other than such correspondence in the course of the day, and I would have no time for constructive work. But since I feel that you are men of genuine good will and that your criticisms are sincerely set forth, I want to try to answer your statement in what I hope will be patient and reasonable terms.

I think I should indicate why I am here in Birmingham, since you have been influenced by the view which argues against “outsiders coming in.” I have the honor of serving as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization operating in every southern state, with headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. We have some eighty five affiliated organizations across the South, and one of them is the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights. Frequently we share staff, educational and financial resources with our affiliates. Several months ago the affiliate here in Birmingham asked us to be on call to engage in a nonviolent direct action program if such were deemed necessary. We readily consented, and when the hour came we lived up to our promise. So I, along with several members of my staff, am here because I was invited here. I am here because I have organizational ties here.

But more basically, I am in Birmingham because injustice is here. Just as the prophets of the eighth century B.C. left their villages and carried their “thus saith the Lord” far beyond the boundaries of their home towns, and just as the Apostle Paul left his village of Tarsus and carried the gospel of Jesus Christ to the far corners of the Greco Roman world, so am I compelled to carry the gospel of freedom beyond my own home town. Like Paul, I must constantly respond to the Macedonian call for aid.

Moreover, I am cognizant of the interrelatedness of all communities and states. I cannot sit idly by in Atlanta and not be concerned about what happens in Birmingham. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial “outside agitator” idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds.

You deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham. But your statement, I am sorry to say, fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations. I am sure that none of you would want to rest content with the superficial kind of social analysis that deals merely with effects and does not grapple with underlying causes. It is unfortunate that demonstrations are taking place in Birmingham, but it is even more unfortunate that the city’s white power structure left the Negro community with no alternative.

In any nonviolent campaign there are four basic steps: collection of the facts to determine whether injustices exist; negotiation; self purification; and direct action. We have gone through all these steps in Birmingham. There can be no gainsaying the fact that racial injustice engulfs this community. Birmingham is probably the most thoroughly segregated city in the United States. Its ugly record of brutality is widely known. Negroes have experienced grossly unjust treatment in the courts. There have been more unsolved bombings of Negro homes and churches in Birmingham than in any other city in the nation. These are the hard, brutal facts of the case. On the basis of these conditions, Negro leaders sought to negotiate with the city fathers. But the latter consistently refused to engage in good faith negotiation.
