Discussion will play a major role in our virtual classroom. In order to better understand the materials presented, you will be asked to participate in discussions for each of the seven course modules. In order to maximize the efficiency of these discussions, there are two guidelines I will expect you to adhere to:
· The first will be that each student listens to and interprets what other students are saying. In this case, listening will involve reading someone else’s discussion posts carefully and mindfully. Listening is challenging for most of us in our daily lives, and these challenges are intensified here due to the online nature of our course. Without body language and tone, we may easily misunderstand what someone else is saying. Please keep an open mind and try your best to objectively understand what someone else is saying within the context of their words.
· The second guideline will be respect for diversity. The nature of the issues we are examining in this course may, at times, be personal and be challenging to some of your beliefs. However, this is one of the main aims of a college education: to present you with a myriad of opinions and worldly perspectives in order to help you pick and choose what you value so that you may act in accordance with what is important to you. Thus, in our virtual classroom you will be challenged with multiple perspectives, some of which may bring into question some of your deepest held beliefs. It is imperative for our learning environment that we do not engage in personal attacks on one another, but rather treat all opinions with respect even if you do not agree with what is being said. Be prepared to have your beliefs challenged and to challenge others; but, most importantly, be prepared to experience positive change and growth from this discourse.
Discussion Grading
For each of the seven course modules you will be expected to make one original post and at least three responses. Therefore, for each module you will be expected to post a minimum of four thoughtful, relevant, and exploratory philosophical reflections.
