RESEARCH PROJECT –Career Investigation (Social work/criminal justice)

Question description

RESEARCH PROJECT –Career Investigation (Social work/criminal justice)

Length: 12-16 pages.

Overview:

The remainder of the semester will focus on a major research project. This project will be broken up into parts to make it manageable and keep you on track.

Complete the assignment fully and follow all directions for page length requirement for each part of the project.

Assignment Description:

For this assignment, you will complete a major research project in five partsYou will investigate different aspects of your (future) career field, analyze the process of becoming a professional in that field, interview someone currently working in that field, keep a detailed annotated bibliography, and reflect on your research process.

Each part of the project will have specific guidelines for you to follow. Pay close attention to the guidelines for each specific part of the assignment.

Although you will complete this project in different parts—the final draft needs to combine all parts into a single document. Review the student samples for examples of what the finished product should look like.

Here are some general guidelines regarding your research:

  • You should synthesize information you learn during the research process.
  • Do not simply cut-and-paste a collage of source material—that does not demonstrate any critical thinking.
  • All sources should be discussed, properly integrated, and cited appropriately both in-text and in the annotated bibliography.
  • Do not use a quote more than two lines in length.
  • The majority of the work should be written by you—that means you must have something to say (again—no collage of what others have said).
  • YOU MUST HAVE A MINIMUM OF 5 SOURCES (of which only 2 can be websites)

**READ and FOLLOW DIRECTIONS for each of the parts of the project listed below.**

Part 1: Research Report:   20%

Part 2: Process Analysis  20%

Part 3: Interview:     20%

Part 4: Annotated bibliography:     35%

Part 5: Reflection:       5%

Total:   100%

Below are the instructions for each part of the research project.

PART 1—Research Report 20%

Length: 2-4 pages

Instructions:

Part 1of this research project is a research report. Don’t let the name fool you—you are not simply reporting information—that does not require much critical thought!

Think of Part 1 as an essay in which you will have the dual purpose of both informing and arguing a position regarding your future career. You will provide some history and background information about the career field (the informative part) and argue who is the most significant person is in that field OR who you think is significant but does not receive enough recognition for their contributions to the field. You need to back up your claims with evidence to prove your points.

Remember that you will learn a lot through research and it is vitally important to keep track of your sources so that it is clear what information came from you and what came from a source. You have to figure out what you have to say about the information—form your own thoughts. You are NOT just reporting here—you must have something to say!

Part 1 criteria:

  • information on the history and background of the career field from its beginning (this should not take up more than 1 page of the 2 page minimum)
  • argue who is the most significant person is in that field OR who you think is significant but does not receive enough recognition for their contributions to the field
  • clearly distinguish the thoughts/ideas/words of others from your own by discussing and integrating sources appropriately
  • cite all sources correctly both in-text and in the annotated bibliography
  • follow an essay structure (introduction with thesis statement, body paragraphs, conclusion)
  • maintain a formal tone and use third person point of view only
  • avoid major grammatical or spelling mistakes

Training and InterventioN  Program

Assignment 1: LASA 2: Training and InterventioN  Program

BE SURE TO FOLLOW ALL STEPS AND MEET ALL GRADING CRITERIA REQUIEREMENTS
The value of a good assess
ment comes from the ability to conceptualize a situation and provide some language and a vehicle to promote change. Too many times in treatment, an assessment is completed as a task of the first few sessions and then left in the chart never to be reviewed again. This is a mistake, and good practice includes a constant review and update to the assessment as well as a plan of action.
Using the assessment that you completed for the LASA 1 in M3: Assignment 2, you will be able topractice making a difference in a child’s life by creating a training and intervention program for the adults in that child’s life.

  • Write a summary assessment of the case study to be handed out in the school meeting with the family and professionals. This summary should include the following:
    • Background information about the child, explaining his or her behavior and the current situation
    • Possible determinates of the stated behaviors focusing on the family
    • Possible determinates of the stated behaviors focusing on the school
  • Create a presentation, with detailed speaker notes, to train the parents and school personnel to better understand the socialization of this particular child and to create a training and intervention program for both parents and school personnel. The presentation should provide research support from at least two peer-reviewed articles and include the following:
    • Separate title and reference slides.

Quantitative Study

Churchill M , et al. (n.d.).  – PubMed – NCBI. Retrieved from https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10218187. Using a therapy dog to alleviate the agitation and desocialization of people with Alzheimer’s disease. A Matched Case–Control Trial. Alzheimer’s and Dementia – Research Critiques and PICOT Statement Final Draft Assignment Benchmark Essay Paper.

Background of Study

According to the The Alzheimer’s Association there has been an  estimated number of  4 million individuals suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease, also known as AD, and by 2050, this static  will continue to grow to an estimated 14 million (Alzheimer’s Association, 1998).  These figures are an indication that the care for those affected by AD will place a burden on health resources with the burden only expected to grow over time.  To counter the expected burden, it is projected that medical care should be focused on addressing the neuropsychiatric symptoms that include anxiety, apathy, depression, and agitation. These symptoms are chronically present in all patients and only worsen over time. Previously, psychotropic medication was used to address these symptoms. Nonetheless, evaluations show that these medication have little effect on the symptoms, and no effect on the quality of life often times resulting in the patient being lethargic along with little interaction in life and or family members at all.   AD is a neurological disorder that presents as a slow, progressive disorder that over time will lead the individual to experience a decrease in cognitive function exacerbated by impairments in memory, reasoning, abstraction, and personality (Manor, 1991). Based on this awareness, pet therapy along with other alternative methods, such as music therapy is proposed as a psychosocial intervention that could achieve the desired goal of addressing the neuropsychiatric symptoms of AD and dementia while improving the quality of life. As such, the present study evaluates usefulness of proposed therapies as mentioned to show improved patient outcomes as well as quality of life.  Even though it has been considered that  AD is a disease that affects only the elderly, it has been diagnosed in younger people (Alzheimer’s Association, 1998).  The cause of AD, even in today’s time with advanced technology is still unknown.  Secondary to the effect of this disease on the normal brain activity can often times result in the patient experiencing late afternoon symptoms, referred to as Sundowners. Behavioral changes that are associated with sundown syndrome include restlessness and verbal behavior (Evans, 1987); confusion; aimless wandering; paranoia; agitation; and aggressive behavior, such as hitting, kicking, and biting directed toward staff, family, or other patients that will take place during evening hours. Agitated patients often display symptoms such as uncooperative routines, that results in difficulties for the staff caring for the patient. The tendencies of these aggressive behaviors may lead the patient to have feelings of seclusion, loneliness, and fear, resulting in increased aggressive behaviors. Alzheimer’s and Dementia – Research Critiques and PICOT Statement Final Draft Assignment Benchmark Essay Paper.

Methods of Study

An experimental and repeated measure design utilized that was used for this study. The subjects were recorded under two random ordered conditions both with and without the dog present, being aware that this research project was approved through the Institutional Review Board and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Eligibility to be involved in the study included a diagnosis of AD or a related disorder such as Dementia, residence in a special-care unit, display of agitated behavior in the evening hours, no allergies to dogs or bad experiences with them, consent from the legally authorized representative person/persons.

There were three extended care facilities with special-care units in the Midwest that consisted of individuals with AD or a related disorder. Each of these facilities held 20 to 35 residents on the unit, and each unit had a common area (lounge) where residents congregated for the day. Those studied consisted of twenty-eight individuals to include 21 women, 7 men.  Each of those involved in the study were also noted to be caucasian with a mean age of 83 and older, all with different levels of severity of the disease. Alzheimer’s and Dementia – Research Critiques and PICOT Statement Final Draft Assignment Benchmark Essay Paper.

Results of Study

The presence of the therapy dog showed nothing less than encouraging results that included verbalizations, smiles, looks, leans, and tactile contact. The importance of looks and smiles could be considered as an indication of happiness and interest, as well as the importance of touch displaying a nonverbal approach to communication. When considering this aspect, one must consider the importance of touch even in those that do not suffer from a disease.  Companionship, touch, and the feelings of affection is necessary in all elements of physical and mental health regardless of age, race, gender, or even those suffering from disease. Alzheimer’s and Dementia – Research Critiques and PICOT Statement Final Draft Assignment Benchmark Essay Paper.

Ethical Considerations

The study mentions that ethical approval for the research was sought from all affiliated institutions after extensive consultation throughout the research process.  The approval was based upon that the study showed no harm to those that were involved in the study and adequate actions had been undertaken to ensure that the participants as well as the animals were protected. In addition, it mentions that there was a requirement for informed consent that was signed by the participants to show that they were aware of the research intentions and consented to participate. Alzheimer’s and Dementia – Research Critiques and PICOT Statement Final Draft Assignment Benchmark Essay Paper.

Conclusion

There is much to be learned about the best treatment for those that suffer from such a sad and deteriorating disease known as Alzheimer’s and Dementia especially knowing that there is rarely early detection and no know cure.  Family members are often times found to be at a loss and only searching for ways to bring their loved ones back to who they used to be.  Even in our worse state, it is simply amazing how a simple thing such as touch, feelings of love and security can make all the difference in the world to a bad day.  This study showed that the presence of a therapy dog did improve socialization and decreased agitation in persons with AD or a related disorder during sundown hours. These changes, however, were found to be unrelated to the severity of the disease process.  With this being said, the results are valuable to nursing practitioners since they show a clear correlation between those that suffer from AD and dementia and that with the use of pet and other alternative methods such as music therapy are under review so that nurses will have evidence to support proposals for development of pet, music and possible other therapy programs. Alzheimer’s and Dementia – Research Critiques and PICOT Statement Final Draft Assignment Benchmark Essay Paper

Erin is a new public health nurse. She lives in Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada. She wants to look for reliable data that will tell her what government-funded resources are available in her county.

Erin is a new public health nurse. She lives in Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada. She wants to look for reliable data that will tell her what government-funded resources are available in her county.

Complete the HRSA Data Warehouse Case Study.
1. Watch the Navigating the HRSA Data Warehouse (HDW) tutorial found at the following link: https://datawarehouse.hrsa.gov/resources/tutorials.aspx/

2. Read the case study below. As you read, follow the path Erin takes on the website.

Erin is a new public health nurse. She lives in Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada. She wants to look for reliable data that will tell her what government-funded resources are available in her county. She read about the Health Resources and Services Administration and while she was on the website, she clicked the HRSA data warehouse link https://datawarehouse.hrsa.gov/. Next, she completed the following steps:
She clicked the Looking For tab and opened the Looking for Local Information link
She clicked the HRSA in Your link
She was particularly interested in knowing about HRSAs activities in HHS regions, states, counties, and congressional districts compared to her state and county. She clicked on the link found in the Data Tools box labeled Custom Comparison Tools.

Erin clicked Please add an area. Next, from the dropdown, she decided to search by state. This prompted another dropdown in which she chose Nevada. Next, she clicked the Add Area button to compare it with HRSAs other state programs. She then decided to add another area. This time she did a county search, which prompted a state dropdown and then a county dropdown. In the county dropdown, she selected Clark. After she clicked Add Area again, she clicked the button at the bottom labeled Compare. The result was a fact sheet.

3. Data analysis
Analyze the data included in the fact sheet. Consider the data sets found in the fact sheet. How does Nevada compare nationwide when it comes to the data sets? What about Clark County? Now click the Start Over button at the top right of the page and complete a search for HRSA programs in your county. Compare the result of your query to Clark County, Nevada.

4. Complete a new search for your state and county.
Identify HRSA program resources for HIV/AIDS in your state and county. What are they? How many clinics are funded by HRSA?

5. Write a two-page paper reflecting on the data you collected and analyzed through the case study. How will this data warehouse be useful to you as a professional nurse?

Your paper should be at least two pages in length, in APA format, typed in Times New Roman with 12-point font, and double-spaced with 1 margins.
