Ethics Position Paper

Ethics Position Paper

Question descriptionPhil 1112 Ethics Final Paper The final paper. The paper will be 8 pages in length, 12 pt font (New Times Roman is a standard font), and double-spaced.

Topics Choose one of the two topics for your final paper.

1. Contemporary Moral Problem. The paper should be a position paper focused on your chosen topic from Part 3 Moral Problems of our text (the table of contents gives you an idea of the variety of topics available). You will need to choose a topic (e.g. Abortion, World Hunger, Capital Punishment, etc), set out and explain at least two of the positions argued for from that section by the authors in the text. Explain and evaluate their arguments. Additionally, argue for (i.e. explain and defend) your own position on the topic.

2. Carl Elliott’s White Coat Black Hat. Set out and explain Carl Elliott’s argument in White Coat Black Hat in detail. Provide textual evidence/citation in setting out and explaining his argument. Present, explain, and discuss at least 2 types of “players” (e.g. guinea pigs, ghost writers, etc.) in the medical world that he discusses in order to illustrate his argument. Evaluate Elliott’s argument you have presented.

Discuss whether you think the argument is a good one. Incorporate at least two of the following moral theories into your discussion: Utilitarianism, Kantianism, and/or Virtue Theory. Remember to explain and defend your own points in regard to your evaluation of his argument. Note: Imagine that the reader of your essay is not entirely familiar with the views you are presenting. This means you might want to explain any specific or technical concepts/language you use. Make sure you answer all of the above parts of the topic. Try to be clear and to the point in your essay. Use examples to make your points, but remember that you will need to explain how your example actually illustrates the point you are trying to make, i.e. don’t rely on the example to do your explaining for you. Also, avoid excessive quotations and a reliance on them to do the explaining for you.

Evaluation Criteria

The primary criteria for evaluating papers will involve a demonstrated understanding of the arguments/positions relevant to the paper topic, the soundness of arguments for one’s own position regarding the topic and general clarity of expression. That is to say, papers will be graded for philosophical content and writing style. If you have difficulty in expressing your points clearly through writing, I suggest you plan on writing many drafts of your essay and that you seriously consider working with the writing center/tutors in order to strengthen your essays.

I use the following scale in distributing grades for assignments. I have also provided explanations for what each level of paper will be like. A Superior achievement of assignment/course requirements.

An A paper will be well organized and extremely clear such that the author’s flow of thought is very easy to follow. One key for this is that there are very few typos and grammatical errors. The thesis, if there is one for the assignment, should be very clear and the essay should be focused on it. There should be no irrelevant digressions or tangents, and the thesis should be well-supported and explained. The views discussed should be captured correctly, and there should be no inconsistencies in the paper’s argument/discussion. An A paper will also show originality/insight and independent thought. It should be an excellent essay that goes well beyond merely satisfying the questions.

B Better than satisfactory achievement of assignment/course requirements While an A paper is an excellent one, a B paper is a good one. It does a bit more than just satisfying the assignment. It shows that effort has been put into the essay with a clear thesis and generally solid argumentation and explanation of the key issues/points involved in the assignment. However, there could be improvement in content and writing. There may be grammatical errors, though not many, which detract from the flow of the essay. There may be confusion in argumentation or some small point at issue, but the errors will not generally be very substantial.

C Satisfactory achievement of assignment/course requirements a C paper is satisfactory and covers the material of the assignment. It is generally correct and deals with at least one of the relevant issues well enough to be understood and to make its point. Various deficits of a C paper include mistaken arguments and key points as well as unexplained concepts/terms that should be explained. Other deficits may be an unclear thesis, a glaring inconsistency in reasoning, other elements that detract from clarity, or an essay consisting of just description/narrative without any analysis of the material. Often times these essays just mention key points without explaining and evaluating them, or they do so in very brief fashion.

D Less than satisfactory achievement of assignment/course requirements but acceptable for credit A D paper seems to have a thesis and point, though it is hard to see what, exactly, it is. The essay mentions relevant material, but it is organized and written such that it is a list of unrelated points and thoughts. Key subject matter is omitted or not explained at all. F Failure to achieve assignment/course requirements An F paper shows little to no comprehension of the material or the assignment directions. These papers usually display an incompetence in grammar and reasoning skills.

review the Research Methods and Findings of the Verweij study conducted in 2014 in this week’s resources

Assignment 2: APPLICATION:
Drawing Conclusions About Research Findings and Their Implications for Clinical Practice

As a current or future nursing researcher and professional, your ability to draw reasonable conclusions from research findings will determine the effectiveness of proposed solutions for clinical nursing practice. As you continue to develop your skill set to become a nursing leader, your exposure to a multitude of research designs, research findings, and evidence-based practice will likely inform how you will absorb this knowledge into meaningful clinical practice. Throughout this course and program, your exposure to different research questions, research study designs, and approaches to addressing serious issues in both nursing and health care confirms the ever-changing landscape in which you have elected to practice. While this is in its own right challenging, it also offers several opportunities to create new knowledge, improve upon current nursing practice, and exercise research skills
for positive patient outcomes.

For this Assignment, review the Research Methods and Findings of the Verweij study conducted in 2014 in this week’s resources. The primary purpose of this quantitative research study was to investigate the effectiveness of an intervention to decrease medication errors in a hospital. The citation and discussion/conclusion information is intentionally deleted so you can draw your own conclusions.

In a 2- to 3-page, double-spaced paper, describe three conclusions you have drawn from the findings in this study, taking into consideration the limitations of the study. Next describe three implications for clinical practice. Once you have submitted the assignment, you will be given the full article for review.

Paper on Hate crimes in the United States

Paper on Hate crimes in the United States

Question description

Term Paper Requirements

The Term Paper is worth 45% of your total course grade. Upon successful completion of this assignment, students will be able to: 1) demonstrate an understanding of the definitions and major concepts involved in the course; 2) explain and critique major theories relevant to the issues addressed in the course; 3) evaluate various theories in light of existing research and their own experience; 4) research (i.e., find and identify) the relevant literature on a particular criminal justice topic; and 5) write a term paper that is excellent in content and appearance.

Your term paper topic is “Hate crimes in the United States.” This is a very challenging topic which continues to be relevant. The topic allows students to demonstrate the ability to research and integrate many sources and concepts into a single cogent paper.

Assume the following: 1) You have been hired as a criminal justice expert by the Hate Crimes Investigation Authority; 2) this authority wants to know what is causing this type of crime; 3) this authority wants to know what it can do to prevent this type of crime; and 4) you have until the deadline indicated in the syllabus to submit your professional report to this authority.

Please keep in mind your report must demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the theories discussed in this course, also understanding that theories are competing versions of descriptions and predictions of human behavior (they can’t all be right), and your familiarity with various library and internet sources of criminological literature and crime statistics.

You may NOT write a term paper about any other topic. THIS IS A DIFFICULT ASSIGNMENT. BEGIN YOUR WORK NOW!!! This assignment is designed to teach students how to think and write like professionals. I expect nothing less than students’ best effort.

The Term Paper a/k/a “report” must meet the following minimum requirements:

1. The term paper must be between 7 and 10 pages in length. The term paper length does not include the title page, table of contents page, or reference page.

2. The term paper must have a title page. The title page must have the title of the term paper, the student’s name, the student’s address, and the name of the course.

3. The term paper must have a table of contents. The table of contents must indicate the pages on which each portion or section of the paper begins. This will look like the table of contents of a book.

4. The term paper must have an “abstract.” An abstract is a short statement of the central ideas in the term paper. The abstract must be between 25 and 40 words in length.

5. The term paper must have a “statement of the problem.” The statement of the problem identifies the topic discussed and the issues pertaining thereto. For purposes of this term paper, it is a one or two paragraph long discussion of the topic and identification of major issues relating to the topic.

6. The “statement of the problem” section of the term paper might identify many issues relating to the topic. However, after the “statement of the problem” section, discuss only one or two of the major issues you identified.

7. The term paper must have a recommendation section. It should briefly summarize the issues raised in the term paper, discuss your recommendations, and note how your recommendations are or are not supported by the facts and expert opinion to which you refer in your paper.

8. There must be a reference section of the term paper, using the APA citation format. If you do not know what the APA citation format is, then look at your textbooks and see how these authors cite the works on which they relied to write their documents. If you still are confused, visit the library and ask a reference librarian to show you an APA citation style document.

9. The term paper must rely upon relevant facts and expert opinion. The term paper must cite at least five peer-reviewed journal articles and scholarly books. THIS MEANS – DO NOT CITE NEWSPAPER OR MAGAZINE ARTICLES!!! The APA citation format must be used.

10. The only references you may cite are peer-reviewed, professional journal articles (e.g., articles published in Crime and Delinquency, Police Quarterly, Social Problems, American Psychological Review), law review articles, scholarly books, federal and state case law (i.e., appellate court decisions), state or federal statutes (including references to their legislative history), and government publications (e.g., Uniform Crime Reports, National Institute of Justice publications, U.S. Census data).

11. Of the references cited, there must be: a) at least one from a scholarly book (i.e., an edited volume or full-length book) published between 1900 and 1990 – I want students to read the books of the theorists we discuss in this course – your textbooks only briefly summarize what the theorists say; b) at least one from a scholarly book (i.e., an edited volume or full-length book) published after 2008 – this will show me that students are familiar with current research and data in this field; and c) at least one from a criminal justice professional journal published in or after January 2013 – this will show me that students know how to find the latest information in this field – if students do the assignments as noted at the end of each lesson they will know how to find this information. If students need help finding reading materials, please go to the library and ask a reference librarian for help.

12. Each section of the term paper must have a separate heading and same must correspond to the page numbers noted on the Table of Contents. Placing a heading at the beginning of each section of the paper makes the discussion in the paper easier to follow. Headings also improve the paper’s visual presentation. Among the headings your paper should have are: a) Abstract; b) Statement of the Problem; c) four to seven word statement of the first issue discussed (including a discussion of theories of crime and delinquency “causing” hate crimes; d) four to seven word statement of the second issue discussed (including a discussion of theories of crime and delinquency “causing” hate crimes; and e) Recommendations.

13. The term paper must use the proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. If a direct quotation is more than two lines long, make certain you single space and indent it.

14. Points will be subtracted for all technical flaws in the term paper.

15. The term paper may not contain any plagiarism. Plagiarism occurs when a person represents someone else’s words, ideas, phrases, sentences or data as one’s own work. When a student submits work that includes such material, the source of that information must be acknowledged through complete and accurate references. All verbatim statements must be acknowledged by means of quotation marks. Examples of plagiarism include, but are not limited to the following:

  • One person quoting another’s words directly without acknowledging the source;
  • Using another’s ideas, opinions or theories without acknowledging the source, even if they have been completely paraphrased in one’s own words;
  • Using facts, statistics or other illustrative material taken from a source, without acknowledging the source, unless the information is common knowledge;
  • Using words or work of others taken from the internet without acknowledging the source(s).

For this assignment, academic misconduct will consist of:

  • Submitting written work to fulfill the requirements of more than one course without the explicit permission of the instructors

and will result in a zero grade.

If any part of a term paper contains plagiarism, no matter how small that part is, the student will receive a zero on the term paper assignment and the matter will be forwarded to the university to begin disciplinary procedures. All papers will be checked by a Plagiarism Prevention System.

For purposes of this term paper assignment, if a term paper fails to use quotation marks when stating the specific language of a statute or court decision, there will be no penalty – just make certain the statute or court decision is properly cited.

16. All papers (and outlines) must be submitted electronically through the “assignments” link. No hard copies will be accepted. There is a REQUIRED Outline, and a REQUIRED First Draft. They must be submitted in order to get credit for the paper.

17. Prepare a detailed Outline (using the format described in #12 above) and list all references (books, articles and other sources of information) you will use to write your term paper. Your detailed outline WITH your list of references that you are using in the term paper must be submitted electronically through the “assignments” link as a “Word” document or in .rtf format, on or before the date listed in the syllabus for the Outline. I will review this document and respond with comments. If you do not submit the Outline to me by the due date in the syllabus I will not review the First Draft of your term paper.

The First Draft of the term paper must be a complete paper – what you consider your final term paper. Submit the First Draft through the “assignments” link as a “Word” document or in .rtf format, on or before the date listed in the syllabus for the First Draft. I will review your First Draft and respond with comments (usually within three weeks). If you do submit the First Draft of your term paper to me by the due date in the syllabus I will not accept your Final Draft.

The Final Draft of your term paper – which is the corrected copy of your First Draft based upon my editorial comments – must be submitted electronically through the “assignments” link as a “Word” document or in .rtf format, on or before the date listed in the syllabus for the Final Draft As a practical matter, you should drop this course if you fail to comply with these term paper requirements because you will not be able to pass this course. No extensions to these three term paper deadlines will be granted. You have many weeks to do this paper and there is no reason to wait until the last day.

Mrs. Smith was seen today in the office for an annual physical.

Week 4: Discussion Part One

2 2 unread replies. 2 2 replies.

You are a Family Nurse Practitioner employed in a busy primary care office. The providers in the group include one physician and three nurse practitioners. The back office staff includes eight medical assistants who assist with patient care as well as filing, answering calls from patients, processing laboratory results and taking prescription renewal requests from patients and pharmacies. Stephanie, a medical assistant, has worked in the practice for 10 years and is very proficient at her job. She knows almost every patient in the practice, and has an excellent rapport with all of the providers.
Mrs. Smith was seen today in the office for an annual physical. Her last appointment was a year ago for the same reason. During this visit, Mrs. Smith brought an empty bottle of Amoxicillin with her and asked if she could have a refill. You noted the patient’s name on the label and the date on the bottle was one week ago. You also noted your name printed on the label as the prescriber. The patient admitted that she called last week concerned about her cough and spoke to Stephanie. You do not recall having discussed this patient with Stephanie, nor do the other providers in the practice.
Discussion Question:
What is your next logically sound course of action? Provide evidence to support your response.

Give An explanation of a barrier that can significantly influence a team approach to curriculum development and why.

Common Barriers to Team Collaboration

What were your initial reactions when you learned that this course consisted of an overarching team project? Did you have any concerns about working in a team?

In general, teamwork and collaboration is viewed as a stressful endeavor. In fact, many students and professionals feel that they can complete work better, faster, and quicker on their own.

Many might even shy away from the opportunity to collaborate with others for fear of time constraints, miscommunication, conflicting views, and incivility among group members. However, the value of collaboration truly outshines any perceived negative barriers.

In particular, collaboration gives educators the opportunity to enrich curriculum with the expertise and experiences of a group of professionals. It also pushes each educator to think “outside of the box” to incorporate innovative strategies, views, and learning opportunities.

In fact, the days of one instructor developing a course are being quickly phased out by collaborative approaches. Many of today’s institutions require a panel of experts to creatively and critically collaborate on course development. As such, it is imperative that you begin to understand not only how to work effectively in a team but also how to overcome common barriers that can occur during the team collaboration process.

To prepare:
• Reflect on your team’s collaborative process. What barriers has your team experienced? How have you and others in your team worked to overcome these barriers? If you believe that your team has not experienced any barriers or difficulties, reflect on Common Barriers to Team Collaboration presented in this week’s Learning Resources. How could these strategies be used to help nurse educators? In addition,

Questions to be addressed in my paper:

1. Review the article “Overcoming Challenges to Collaboration: Nurse Educators’ Experiences in Curriculum Change” uploaded below. Consider the benefits of and barriers to team collaboration.
2. Select one barrier that has a significant influence on a team approach to curriculum development.
3. Give An explanation of a barrier that can significantly influence a team approach to curriculum development and why.
4. Search the Walden Library or in the internet to identify an article that presents strategies for overcoming your selected barrier. Describe two strategies you could implement to overcome this barrier, as well as how these strategies could help increase postive team collaboration.
5. How could these two strategies be used to help nurse educators?
6. Justify your response by citing references to this week’s Learning Resources and your selected article as appropriate.
