Now that you have spent the last 8 weeks discussing theory development and exploring models and philosophies that guide advance practice nursing, it is time for you to put it all together. In this Assignment, you will create a presentation using any form of presentation software (e.g., PowerPoint®, Prezi™, Movenote™, Powtoons™, Slidedog™, and so on). Your presentation should bring together the theory that best fits your concept of advance practice nursing, the model that you will use to translate this into practice, and your final philosophy of advance practice nursing related to your role after graduation.

Please remember that your presentation should contain slides that have bullet points. The bullets should number no more than four to six per slide. The bullet point is not written as a complete sentence. It contains key words. You, as the presenter will explain in depth what each bullet point means in the audio portion of the presentation.   • Model Slides: The third and fourth slides will address your chosen model. The bullet points should consist of the specific characteristics of the model.   • Theory Slides: The next three slides will focus on your chosen theory. The first slide should present your theory and why you chose it. The next slide would present the key concepts of the theory and how it has been used to date in past research no older than 5 years ago. The third slide will discuss how you will use this theory in practice as an advance practice nurse upon graduation.
  • Philosophy Slide: The next area will consist of one slide that presents your philosophy of advance practice nursing in the post-graduate role you will assume. The philosophy statement will consist of one to three sentences that distill the essence of what you believe advance practice nursing is and your conception of nursing as a profession. It is written in the first person and present tense. It is a personal statement of your beliefs about the profession of nursing. This should present guiding statements for your future practice in the advanced practice role.An example of a philosophy statement might read this way:

    Advanced practice nursing takes the art and science of nursing to a level of “other” and “self” interacting together to reach a state of optimal wellness guided with compassion and love for the culture of the “other.”

This Discussion provides a starting point for developing your written plan, as indicated in Assignment 1 this week.
To prepare:
Reflect on the focus of your proposed Practicum Project, which you identified through discussion with your practicum Faculty Member and Preceptor last week.
View the Practicum Project Plan (PPP) Overview document provided in this week’s Learning Resources. Consider the project planning guidelines included in the document as you prepare for this Discussion.
Address the following to help you develop your plan for the Practicum Project:

  • Review the scholarly literature, specialization standards, and/or regulatory standards that validate and shed light on your Practicum Project focus. Which professional organizations would you contact in relation to your topic? What regulatory standards would you address? As you proceed, you will continue to gather evidence from a combination of sources for your project as part of your written Practicum Project Plan.
  • Identify the overarching goal for your Practicum Project.
  • Consider how you can achieve your Practicum Project goal through the development and fulfillment of objectives. The I stands for the intervention which would be the daily chlorahexadine baths. This intervention would help reduce the risk of hospital acquired infections such as MRSA or c diff. Comparison is the next step and is what the C stands for. In this case the comparison of the effectiveness of daily CHG baths would be compared to not doing CHG baths. The O stands for outcomes that we would hope to see which would be a decrease in hospital acquired infections. The T is the last and final letter and stands for time. In my hospital the study was conducted over a three-month period to see if we saw a decrease in our hospital acquired infections. Using evidence based research I will find the conclusion to this question.Evidence Based ResearchWhen conducting research it is very important to have filtered information and unfiltered information. Filtered information is information that has been appraised for quality and clinical relevance (Hierarchy of Evidence Pyramid). Filtered information includes systematic review critically appraised topics and critically appraised individual articles (Hierarchy of Evidence Pyramid). Unfiltered information is evidence that has not necessarily been appraised for quality. This information tends to come from primary sources (Hierarchy of Evidence Pyramid). The first article I found multiple studies done on multiple patients with bone marrow transplants. The purpose of the study was to see if bathing them daily with CHG would decrease the acquired infections which it did. This article would be considered a systemic review because it had multiple resources and multiple studies. When searching for critically appraised topics it was very difficult to find one that had a cohort study that had to do with CHG baths there were some articles about other ways to reduce infection but none that involved CHG.The next article I found falls under the topic of expert opinion in the case the expert opinion came from the nurses. In this study done in 2017 they interviewed nurses nurses aides and nurse managers. They found that all interviewed did find a decrease in infection when CHG baths were used however many times the nurses did not have time to administer the baths.Research AdviceI think that when conducting a search for evidence base practice it is important to stay open minded and patient. Staying open minded will help you think of different search terms that may yield different search results.
