Historically, men have dominated scientific research. Accordingly, the way research has been designed, the way studies have been conducted, and the ways in which results have been interpreted have been at risk for gender bias. In other words, the preconceived ideas and beliefs or unfounded prejudice about the traits and characteristics of each gender potentially influence the outcomes of research studies. Even today, as women have entered into the academic and scientific worlds in significant numbers, research is subject to gender bias. Bias can be present at any stage of the research process and may be difficult to completely eliminate since researchers may not be aware of subtle biases they hold.
The implications of gender bias can be far reaching. As the scientific community uses research study results for subsequent research and the media reports these findings to the public, gender bias can have a huge impact. Society may be making decisions that are based on incorrect, misleading, or biased data. As an example, a majority of early heart disease research was conducted primarily using male subjects leading to the assumption that heart disease was a man’s disease and did not significantly impact women. The gender bias in heart disease research resulted in little attention being paid to women who had heart disease symptoms as well as delays and limitations in the treatment for these symptoms for many years. In reality, it is now common knowledge that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women as it is for men.

There is a quote that goes “Life is too short to be living somebody else’s dream.” I don’t want to work for someone else the rest of my life helping them to live out their dream of being who they are… I’d like to live out my dream.  Being my own boss is important to me.  I’m in a position where I feel like I’ve discovered my passion… something I believe I’ve been put on this Earth to do.  This position that I am in, is not just for me, it helps so many.  From what I can tell, this is not a job that is going to make me loads of money, however, that’s okay, because it is not money that drives me.  What drives me is the idea that I can make a difference in someone’s life.  I can be a part of something that help people break negative patterns /behaviors that have been around for generations in theirs families- that they have decided “the buck stops here” and in turn breaking those patterns and behaviors can help them discover a whole different life for themselves.  All of this- being my own boss, living out my own dream, being an influencing force in peoples’ lives, doing meaningful work will all allow me to grow as a person.  I am sure along the way I will become more self aware of things that I may personally need to change, or develop.  I am grateful for this position.
I’ve mentioned in the past that I plan on joining my local NAMI group.  This summer I will make space for that in my schedule.  I plan on attending CEU’s and conferences that will put me in position to be in a space with like minded individuals, which I believe will help me grow personally and professionally as a counselor.

My definition of spiritual care is being there for my patients beyond their physical needs, to care for their whole person, not only their physical body. It includes listening to their struggles, worries, or concerns they might feel the need to share as well as coordinating a chaplain and respecting their own religious or personal beliefs.

My definition is similar to the one offered in the readings in that it involves caring for the whole person: listening, praying, being present, etc. (Meilaender, 2013).

My definition differs from the description given by Meilaender in a couple ways. One, I left out that it is an integral piece of the assessment, which Meilaender states at the beginning of the discussion on spiritual care. It is not something that should only occur when we “have time”, and it should not need to be private or undocumented either (Meilaender, 2013).

Meilaender (2013) also defines spiritual care as, “facilitating a person’s relationship with God through Jesus Christ.” (p.264). It also included that spiritual care is a way of bringing people closer to God through compassion, listening, prayer, etc. This is not something that I included in my definition.

I very much appreciated that Meilaender (2013) included that spiritual care is never rude or coercive, and if patients have other belief systems, that we must be respectful of their preferences. I believe this is very important also because judging people generally tends to push them away and make them disconnect from the person passing judgment as opposed to make them feel loved and comfortable.

Comment 2

From a nursing perspective, spiritual care is meeting the spiritual need(s) of your patient whenever it is required. This can be accomplished through active listening, prayer, or offering of religious services (i.e. chaplain). My definition and understanding of spiritual care is similar to the description offered in the topic readings. According to Shelly and Miller (2009), spiritual care is defined as “putting people in touch with God through compassionate presence, active listening, witness, prayer, Bible reading and partnering with the body of Christ (the church community and the clergy). It is never coercive or rude” (p. 265).

Compassionate presence is described as providing assistance at the moment it is needed and constantly nudging patients toward the goals that God has for them (Shelly & Miller, 2009, p. 265). “Active listening includes hearing what a person is not saying as well as the actual thoughts and feelings articulated” (Shelly & Miller, 2009, p. 266). Witness involves sharing a story or providing scripture that may be helpful toward patient healing. It is important to remember that “our witness should not be self-righteous or manipulative, but it can be bold” (Shelly & Miller, 2009, p. 268). Prayer is communicating with God in whichever manner the patient feels is helpful. Bible reading allows the patient to search for scripture that “can be a deep source of comfort and strength to the believer” (Shelly & Miller, 2009, p. 271). Remaining in touch with the church community and the clergy allows the patient to have a larger support base and helps the nurse further meet their patient’s spiritual needs.

The student is to choose an incident that occurred during the clinical day. It can be an incident like a code blue, a procedure such as a dressing change, an interaction (positive or negative) with a family or staff member.
1. Paragraph 1: Describe the scenario/pathophysiology. I followed a charge nurse who had 4 patients on the pulmonary unit as well as she had to make the schedule for the afternoon shift. She was juggling not only her patients but she was the go to person for the unit. We had one patient who suffered from Marfans syndrome which is a genetic disorder that affects the body’s connective tissue. He also only had one lung on the right side. They surgically removed the left lung, however he did not want to discuss it at the time of why his left lung was surgically removed because he was complaining of pain that he stated was a 7 on the pain scale of 1 to 10. The nurse offered him Tylenol however he said that does not help his pain. So we contacted the doctor and he Okayed to give the patient morphine along with two Tylenol. One hour later I followed the nurse back into the patient’s rom to see how his pain was doing and to get another pain score and he was still at a 7. We did let him know he was unable to get anymore pain medication unless his doctor approved (which he did not).
