"New Scientific Study Suggests Humans Were Created By Aliens"

Passing gas cures cancer???  View the following video (*contains explicit language): Scientific Studies: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO) (Links to an external site.)
Then find a recent “news” story where the popular media likely misconstrued the hard science behind the article that it is claiming to be reporting on.  Then find the original research article itself, and share both of these with the class.  What fantastical claims are the media purporting?  In what ways do the media exaggerate the original article in order to make it more “glamorous” or sensational?
Post a response to the video you watched with the link above and addressing the questions above.
create a response to the following two discussion responses:
1. “New Scientific Study Suggests Humans Were Created By Aliens”
The fantastical claims the media are purporting in this particular news report, are human life on Earth is a direct result of alien intervention. This is due to scientists finding a particular signature of the number 37 in our genetic makeup. They suggest something was purposefully sent in a process called panspermia (a theory that life on earth originated from microorganisms or chemical substances of prior life forms in outer space, which then can initiate life when reached a suitable environment). So where does the number 37 come into play? The example the media gives, is the mass of all molecules core shared by 30 amino acids is 74.They figure this number 37 times 2 to equal 74. Therefore, since the number 37 appears in our genetic makeup, is proof enough to suggest human life were created by intelligent aliens from another planet. The original article simply claims to have discovered an “intelligent-like signal” with our genetic makeup. The study respectfully admitted the theory is far fetched. Not quite having solid evidence of what, if any planet released this “chemical life substance” that was transferrable to Earth. The media exaggerated the original article in portraying it to be a direct result of alien intervention, where as the article focused more on the molecular components within the human gene.
2. “No: Smelling fart does not prevent cancer “
This news article was truly absurd and the most twisted thing I had ever heard of. Indicating that smelling fart might prevent cancer. Scientists made no such claims to this statement. The original article from a University of Exeter press release was titled, “Rotten egg gas holds key to healthcare therapies.”
It was this one quote that reporters just took out of context. Although hydrogen sulfide is well known as an overpowering, foul-smelling gas in rotten eggs, it is naturally produced in the body and could in fact be a healthcare significance with implications for future therapies for a variety of diseases,” said Dr. Mark Wood of the biosciences department at the university, based in the United Kingdom.
The actual journal article in Medicinal Chemistry Communications that motivated the press release was not about smelling farts or preventing any disease. Instead, it discussed the development of a compound, that in laboratory experiments delivered very small amounts of hydrogen sulfide that is the heart of building cells
In none of the research stated individuals should inhale “fart” for any reason.

Homework Questions March 2016

Turbulence can occur when shear (∆ V) in a current reaches critical (high) values. This is particularly important in the upper thermocline.

Turbulent mixing occurs when the shear overcomes the vertical stability of the water column as measured by the Brunt-Viasala frequency

N² = – g/ρ dρ/dz [1/s²].

Turbulence occurs when the non-dimensional Richardson number

Ri = N²/ (dV/dz)² < 1.

If N ~ f ~ 10 ^-4 [1/s] what shear is necessary to create turbulent mixing?
What does this do to the phytoplankton thin layers discussed in Durham et al. 2009 Science , 323, 20 Feb, 2009 (also see Perspective in same issue)?
What does the horizontal gradient in the thermocline depth have to do with this?

A bottom mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) deployed on a reef measures mean velocities at two depths above the deployment depth. The lower one at z = 1 m measures a mean flow of 0.046 m/s and the upper one at z = 2 m measures a flow of 0.148 m/s. Using the log-law formulation calculate u* and zo. Also calculated the vertical diffusivity, Kz.

Two ports along a coast line are 300 km apart. One port has high tides 30 minutes later than the other. How deep is the effective depth for the tidal propagation. If we are on the western side of an ocean in the northern hemisphere which port is farther north?

A community of mussels lives one meter (1 m) below mean sea level. If the region has a two meter (2 m) semidiurnal tide, how many hours per day are the mussels exposed?

If blue heron can consume 2 mussels per hour but require exposed mussels and a croaker can consume one mussel per hour but requires 0.5 m of water to swim, which is the greater predator?

Consider a tidal estuary with a surface area of 100 X 20 Km = 2,000 km² and an average depth of 2 m. If the tidal range is 0.2 m driven by a dominate M2 tide and the riverine input is Qr = 100 m³/s calculate the following:

The mean residence time for fresh water in the estuary.
Expected tidal flushing time.
Average estuarine salinity if the offshore salinity is So=33.

Discuss the issues involved with pollutants entering the estuary via the river versus those directly input to the estuary.

Upwelling on the California coast is typically estimated to amount to approximately a Sverdrup (T= 1 X 10^6 m^3/s) along a coast of L ~ 2000 km. Convert this to mass transport (kg/s) using an appropriate estimate of density and then calculate the wind stress needed to produce this flux using the Ekman transport equation. (Note this problem involves a careful attention to units. The answer should be in Nt/m²).

The Columbia River plume extends in the expected direction in the low flow regime, but in summer puts freshwater on the Oregon coast. Explain this phenomenon.

Choose another river in the world and produce an analysis of their estuaries and the coastal circulations they are involved with.
9) Discuss the influence of tidal friction and the history of the earth-moon system on
either the sedimentary history or biology of the oceans.

10) Consider the Winyah Bay estuary in South Carolina. The Bay is feed by the Pee Dee River system with a drainage area of 33 X 10³ km² and two smaller rivers that combined with Winyah Bay (65 km² in area). The two smaller rivers drain an area of 5,000 km².

Now if the Pee Dee system has been gauged to have a minimum flow in Aug.-Nov. of 200 m³/s and a maximum flow during the rainy season (Dec.-Mar.) of 1500 m³/s for an average of 600 m³/s, what is the expected total freshwater flux? (Hint: At this point you know nothing about the surface fluxes over the area, i.e. E or P.)

Now if the annual average temperature in South Carolina is T = 18º C and the precipitation based on a rain gauge network is P = 130 cm/yr calculate the freshwater influx to the Bay using the ∆f/P equation given in the lecture. How does this compare with the estimate obtained above? Why might a difference be expected?
If the average depth of the Bay is 2 m, what is the expected residence time for freshwater in the estuary? Given a semi-diurnal tidal range of one meter what flushing time does the tidal prism balance give? Discuss the possible reasons for any difference.

Explain the governing board’s role in these strategic initiatives, determining its responsibility and involvement.
Evidence-based management means that operational and strategic decisions are made based upon the evidence that goals and objectives are actually being met. Quantitative measurements must be identified and measured. This data is then used to evaluate the HCO’s performance. Name three (3) performances Middleville can use to measure its success in providing quality healthcare to the community, and identify quantifiable, measurable indicators that can be used to do so. Explain the importance of each performance measurement.
Given the statistics of Middleville and its two (2) competitors provided in Table 1, recommend to the HCO what areas it should focus on to maintain its competitive market share as well as continue to provide healthcare to the community in the 21st century.
Some of Middleville’s Board members are very interested in pursuing advanced technology systems over the next five (5) years, while others are concerned about the enormous expense and need assurance that the investment in technology will be worthwhile. In both monetary and process terms, describe the costs and benefits associated with implementing EMR and associated health data systems. Lay out a plan for how various systems can be implemented.
Middleville has faced many challenges in recruiting and retaining nurses and other clinical employees. The economy has hit the area very hard and budgetary limitations have reduced the amount of money available for salary increases. The Board knows it needs to provide other benefits to their valued employees. Provide at least two (2) suggestions to Human Resources to promote employee satisfaction and, therefore, retain experienced personnel.

Review this week’s readings in the DSM-5.

The DSM-5 states that the “DSM-5 is designed to better fill the needs of clinicians, patients, families, and researchers for a clear and concise description of each mental disorder organized by explicit diagnostic criteria, supplemented, when appropriate, by dimensional measures that cross diagnostic boundaries, and a brief digest of information about the diagnosis, risk factors, associated features, research advances, and various expressions of the disorder” (p. 5). You will be using these diagnostic descriptions and categories throughout this course in order to make diagnoses, and you will continue to refer to them as a mental health professional. In this Assignment, you will look at a general overview of the DSM.
To prepare:

  • Review this week’s readings in the DSM-5.
  • Keep in mind the stated purpose of the DSM.
  • Consider the organization of the classifications and any possible biases with respect to the position of certain disorders.
  • Note whether or not the classifications are easy to follow and the appendices easy to navigate.
  • Consider potential strengths and limitations of the DSM-5.

With these thoughts in mind:
Post by Day 4 an explanation of what you perceive to be two strengths and two limitations of the DSM-5 and why you consider each as such. Also, explain how and when you might use the DSM-5 in your practice and the ways you can circumvent its limitations.
Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

Critical Incident Analysis Model Nursing Essay Assignment Paper

Critical Incident Analysis Model Nursing Essay Assignment Paper

Growth as a nursing student requires one to “return to” an incident or event (positive or negative) and reflect on the reasoning behind decision-making.  Through critical reflection, nurses become aware of their personal beliefs, feelings and knowledge that influence their actions.

The student is to choose an incident that occurred during one of the clinical days this week.  The issue can be from the patient’s pathophysiology, education needs, psychosocial needs, socioeconomic conditions, cultural/religious concerns, or a combination of these factors.  It can be an incident like a cardiopulmonary arrest, a procedure like a dressing change or bladder catheterization, or an interaction (positive or negative) with a family member, staff person, or physician. Critical Incident Analysis Model Nursing Essay Assignment Paper.

TRENDS WHICH YOU BELIEVE ARE CONTRIBUTING TO THE NURSING SHORTAGE

TRENDS WHICH YOU BELIEVE ARE CONTRIBUTING TO THE NURSING SHORTAGE

BUSINESSWEEK CASE: A Critical Shortage of Nurses

The United States is facing a severe nursing shortage. Already, an estimated 8.5 percent of U.S. nursing positions are unfilled—and some expect that number to triple by 2020 as 80 million baby boomers retire and expand the ranks of those needing care. Hospital administrators and nurses’ advocates have declared a staffing crisis as the nursing shortage hits its 10th year.

So why aren’t nurses paid more? Wages for registered nurses rose just 1.34 percent from 2006 to 2007, trailing well behind inflation. The answer is complicated, influenced by hospital cost controls and insurance company reimbursement policies. But another factor is often overlooked: Huge numbers of nurses are brought into the United States from abroad every year. In recent years nearly a third of the RNs joining the U.S. workforce were born in other countries.

Critics say this is a short-term solution that could create long-term problems. The influx of non-U.S. nurses allows hospitals to fill positions at low salaries. But it prevents the sharp wage hike that would encourage Americans to enter the field, which could solve the nursing shortage in the years ahead. “Better pay would signify to society that nursing is a promising career,” says Peter Buerhaus, a professor of nursing at Vanderbilt University. “It’s a critical factor in building the workforce of the future.”

The U.S. market for nurses is a reflection of how labor markets can change with globalization. With new technology and the increasing movement of workers, labor markets are no longer local or even national. Supply and demand don’t work quite as they did in the past. Shortages in one market aren’t corrected with higher prices if supply comes from another.

Pay isn’t the only issue. Difficult working conditions and understaffing also deter qualified people from pursuing the profession. But average annual wages for registered nurses (one of the most highly trained categories) is now just under $58,000 a year, compared with a $36,300 average for U.S. workers overall. And it’s clear that qualified American nurses see that as not enough: 500,000 registered nurses are not practicing their profession—one-fifth of the current RN workforce of 2.5 million and enough to fill current vacancies twice over.

Hospitals insist the U.S. shortage is too severe to address simply with money. Carl Shusterman, an immigration lawyer in Los Angeles, says he has 100 hospital clients that have 100 vacancies apiece. With two- to three-year waiting lists to get into nurse-training programs in the United States, pressure to import nurses won’t abate, he says, adding, “Even if we could train more nurses and pay them more, we’d still need to import them.”

Raising pay has successfully attracted nurses in the past, however. To remedy a shortage that developed in the late 1990s, hospitals started hiking wages in 2001—and added 186,500 nurses from 2001 to 2003. Some advocates draw a direct link between wages and recruiting. A 2006 study by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research concluded, “Increasing pay for nurses is the most direct way to draw both currently qualified and aspiring nurses to hospital employment.”

While nurses’ advocates say better pay is critical, they also argue that working conditions must improve if the United States is to cultivate an enduring nursing workforce. “You will draw in some people with a good pay raise, but you won’t necessarily get them to stay,” says Cheryl Johnson, a registered nurse and president of the United Association of Nurses, the largest nurses’ union in the United States. “Almost every nurse will tell you that staffing is a critical problem. The workload is so great that there’s not time to see how [patients are] breathing, give them water, or turn them to prevent bedsores. The guilt can be unbearable.”

Whatever mix of better wages, better working conditions, and foreign workers hospitals employ, solving the nursing shortage in the long run will require solutions on several fronts. “Nurses are getting more organized, but major change isn’t going to happen overnight,” says Suzanne Martin, a spokeswoman for the United Association of Nurses, noting that other groups “would prefer to keep things as they are.”

Read the Businessweek Case: A Critical Shortage of Nurses from chapter 2 in your text book. Use the Argosy University online library for additional research, and do the following:

  • In 1-2 paragraphs, summarize the case and your research that relates to the case.
  • Based on your research, explain at least three trends which you believe are contributing to the nursing shortage. Justify your response.
  • Based on your research, explain at least three HR trends and practices which might help hospitals recruit and retain enough nurses. Justify your response.
  • Explain the skills and knowledge an HR Manager needs in a hospital and how these skills and knowledge can be used to help attract and retain nurses.

Write a 3-page paper in Word format. Apply current APA standards for writing style to your work. Utilize at least three outside resources, one of which may be your text book, in formulating your response.

Hypothesis testing

Hypothesis testing

4-Each alpha level is dependent on the circumstance that surrounds a particular study. The significance level(alpha) is the probability of committing a type 1 error. A type 1 error is committed when the researcher falsely rejects the null hypothesis. A significance level of 0.05 is the standard situation, most especially in the field science.

There are some experiments where you would most likely want to lower the type 1 error rate such as experiment that affects human health, like drug research or studies of psychological treatment. For some experiments, if the consequence of applying null hypothesis is extremely serious, for instance, if null hypothesis applies, there may be death, or serious injury, then you want to try your best to avoid the type I error. That means you must avoid the situation that null hypothesis is true but you reject it. As the significance level is the probability, you will make the type 1 error. So, for such experiments with serious results, we want to make the level smaller than standard situation. So, for such experiments, if you can’t tolerate a 5% chance of being wrong, use a lower significance level, 0.01 for example. 0.01 is common if there’s a possibility of death or serious disease or injury.

If the consequences of being wrong are especially minor such as political research or animal migration studies. you might use a higher significance level, such as 0.1, but this is rare in practice. That is, it may be common that we make the significance level much smaller than 0.05, but we rarely make the level larger than 0.05.

5-The alpha is the level of statistical significance. It can be any number between 0-1. 0.10, 0.05 and 0.01 are most commonly used. A situation where we would want to accept a higher alpha level is with medical testing. We would much rather have false positive test results that would lead to additional testing, even though it is going to give our patients an insane amount of anxiety. It is better than a false negative where no further testing or treatment would be indicated, and the patient would go untreated.

6-Not all results of hypothesis tests are equal. A hypothesis test or test of statistical significance typically has a level of significance attached to it. This level of significance is a number that is typically denoted with eh Greek letter alpha Many journals throughout different disciplines define that statistically significant results are those for which is equal to 0.05 or 5%.

The number represented by  is a probability, so it can take a value of any nonnegative real number less than one. Although in theory any number between 0 and 1 can be used for , when it comes to statistical practices this is not the case. Of all levels of significance, the values of 0.10, 0.05, and 0.01 are the most commonly used .

In medical screening for a disease, consider the possibilities of a test that falsely tests positive for a disease with one that falsely tests negative for a disease; a false positive will result in anxiety for our patient but will lead to other tests that will determine that verdict of our test was indeed incorrect; a false negative will give our patient the incorrect assumption that he does not have a disease when he in fact does. The result is that the disease will not be treated; given the choice, scientists would rather have conditions that result in a false positive than a false negative.
