“The Art of Effectively Facilitating Processes”

Discussion: Creating, Developing, and Leading Effective Teams
A critical skill for all nurse managers is the ability to create, develop, and lead effective teams. When people are part of an effective and well-functioning team, they are more productive and have a stronger commitment to the organization. Nurse managers have a responsibility to create teams that fulfill functional needs within their units or departments. These can include leadership teams, ad hoc project teams, or primary work teams.
As a nurse manager, there is a variety of ways that you can enhance team functioning. The first step is developing the structural elements of the team and then designing the team with the appropriate membership. Just as you must critically examine each application during the employment process, so will you critically examine the skills and attributes of each employee before appointing him or her to a collective team.
In this week’s Discussion, you lay the groundwork for creating and developing a team for your unit, department, or health care setting. You also identify leadership strategies that you could employ to increase the team’s organizational effectiveness.
To prepare

  • Review Chapter 5, “The Art of Effectively Facilitating Processes” from the course text, From Management to Leadership: Strategies for Transforming Health Care. Carefully examine the section, “Essential Elements of a Team” to identify the six steps of creating an effective team.
  • Consider a team you might create for your current organization or one with which you are familiar. For example, is there a project to be accomplished or a problem to be solved? Perhaps there is a need for a leadership team within your unit or department?
  • Identify the purpose or goal for your team. Then, reflect on the following questions:
    • What type of team would you create (leadership, ad hoc, or primary work team) to accomplish this purpose or goal? What are the benefits or disadvantages of creating this type of team?
    • What staff members would you want on this team? Why? How could their skill sets and positions make them effective team members?
  • Explore this week’s Learning Resources to identify leadership strategies you might employ before, during, and after the team-building phase. For example, what leadership strategies might influence synergy among team members while also increasing the effectiveness of the team?

Post a description of the team you would create, including the purpose or goal the team would serve, the team type, and the specific skills each member would contribute as well as their job positions. Describe at least two leadership strategies you could implement to help this team effectively achieve its purpose or goal.

Ethical Case Study Analysis Draft Guidelines and Rubric

COU 500 Ethical Case Study Analysis Draft Guidelines and Rubric
Overview: Ethical codes are a set of established standards developed by professional organizations. These codes are meant to guide the professional behavior of a discipline. For counselors, the abili%y %o make soun. e%/ical .ecisions in %/e clien%’s bes% in%eres% is paramoun% an. can be c/allenging. Of%en8 no clear answers exis% wi%/ regar. %o .ilemmas. Ra%/er8 %/e counselor’s response is a reflec%ion of bes% e%/ical fi% an. prac%ice. Base. on principles such as autonomy, justice, fidelity, nonmaleficence, and beneficence, the ethical codes that counselors espouse play a pivotal role to the therapeutic process.
For the case study analysis portion of the final project, you will have the opportunity to explore how and why ethics are important to the counseling profession. After reviewing a case that has ethical implications, you will describe the key elements of the case that must be addressed and identify how ethical codes apply. Using this information, you will formulate and justify a plan of action based on the application of an ethical decision-making model and historical precedents. Further, you will have the opportunity to reflect on the process of ethical decision making as it relates to the profession of counseling.
Case Study: You are assigned a new client at your agency. Johnny is a 35-year-old middle-class Caucasian man who has been mandated to attend counseling. Upon intake, Johnny states that he is angry about being made to attend counseling. Four months before that, he and his wife had an altercation in which law enforcement was called. He was subsequently arrested for domestic violence, and the Department of Children and Family Services intervened because his two children (a five-year-old boy and a seven-year-old girl) were present at the time of the fight. He has been ordered to successfully complete substance-abuse counseling because he was under the influence. When prompted about his anger, Johnny tells you that he is angry that he had to leave his home and attend treatment. He states that his wife had equal blame. Further, he states that he never wanted children in the first place and feels trapped because of them. Now he feels as though his freedom has been taken away because he lost his job, his house, and his ability to enjoy a few drinks because he will lose the children he never wanted. Over the next month, Johnny is compliant with attending counseling, but he seems resistant and guarded during his sessions.
Over the weekend, you go to a local restaurant with your friends and notice your client drinking in the bar area of the restaurant. You proceed with your plans and do not acknowledge him. Over the next hour or so, you watch him become increasingly intoxicated. What do you do?
Prompt: Compose a draft of the case study analysis portion of the final project. For this draft, you will analyze a case study by conceptualizing the case and applying a decision-making model that is appropriate for the situation. You will also have the opportunity to justify the decisions you are making and reflect on the process of making them. Your draft should address the all the critical elements of the assignment so that you may receive feedback prior to your final submission in Week Eight.
Specifically, the following critical elementsmust be addressed:
I. Case Conceptualization a. Describe the key components of the case study that are essential in conceptualizing the case. b. Identify the ethical codes that are relevant to working with this specific case in a professional counseling capacity.
II. Decision Making a. Choose an ethical decision-makingmodel that is appropriate for conceptualizing this case. b. Using historical precedence, explain why you chose this decision-making model to conceptualize the case. c. Apply the components of your chosen decision-making model to the case to determine the ethical and legal considerations that need to be
made.
III. Reflection Based on your personal philosophy of counseling, discuss how this case influences the practice of professional counseling in our society.

Forensic assessment has been largely shaped by statutes, legal standards, and the outcomes of historical landmark cases.

Assignment 2: Landmark Civil Case
Forensic assessment has been largely shaped by statutes, legal standards, and the outcomes of historical landmark cases. When working in an environment where there is no room for error, it is imperative to understand the relevant court decisions that inform the rationale behind various assessment procedures. Unless one knows the relevant statutory or case law, as well as the standards that they set, it is not possible to select an appropriate method of assessment.
Using resources from the professional literature, investigate the research literature on one landmark case pertaining to an important psycholegal issue that forensic mental health professionals address in their assessments. The psycholegal issue may be chosen from the area of criminal forensic psychology (e.g., competency to waive Miranda rights, competency to stand trial, or mental state at the time of the offense), or it may be chosen from the civil area, such as cases pertaining to the right to treatment, the right to refuse treatment, civil commitment, child custody, fitness to parent, or disability. Remember that you must select a case that has direct implications for the work of a forensic mental health professional. Landmark cases are typically historical ones. Recent legal cases that are prominent in the news are not necessarily landmark cases.
The literature you consult can include the Argosy University online library resources, relevant textbooks, peer-reviewed journal articles, and websites ending in .edu or .gov that are created by professional organizations, agencies, or institutions.
More specifically, you are encouraged to refer to your program-required textbook Psychological Evaluations for the Courts: A Handbook for Mental Health Professionals and Lawyers for landmark cases.
You may also refer to the category Landmark Cases in the Landmark Cases of the U.S Supreme Court .
In a minimum of 300 words, respond to the following:
· Identify a landmark civil case and explain why you chose it for review.
· Provide a short review of the facts of the case.
· Identify the psycholegal issue that was in dispute.
· Discuss the final decision on the issue by the highest court that heard the case.
· Discuss the ways in which the case is relevant to the legal standard that forensic professionals must consider. In other words, discuss the implications of the case for the practice of forensic assessment.
· Provide a properly formatted legal reference for the case. If necessary, consult “Appendix 7.1, References to Legal Materials,” starting on p. 216 of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th Edition.
Submission Details:
· By the due date assigned, post your responses to this Discussion Area.
· Through the end of module, respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts.

Trace the Scientific Method in a Primary Research Scientific Article

Written Assignment 1: Trace the Scientific Method in a Primary Research Scientific Article

Addresses course outcomes 1-4

-recognize and explain how the scientific method is used to solve problems

  • make observations and discriminate between scientific and pseudoscientific explanations
  • weigh evidence and make decisions based on strengths and limitations of scientific knowledge and the scientific method
  • use knowledge of biological principles and the scientific method to ask relevant questions, develop hypotheses, design and conduct experiments, interpret results, and draw conclusions

Before attempting this assignment, you might want to revisit the Scientific Method Tutorial in the Science Learning Center under the Course Content area.

While living on the former US Naval Air Station Keflavik in Iceland in 2002 (and teaching for UMUC), I began ecology experiments on growing trees in the barren landscape in collaboration with Iceland Forest Research.  Results of these experiments were published in a paper by Riege & Sigurgeirsson in the Scandinavian Journal of Forest Research in 2009.  I believe this paper serves well for your general biology assignment to trace and critique the scientific method in a primary research article.

Please do not worry that I take offense at any criticism of the article. When these manuscripts are first submitted to journals, the reviewers rake the authors through the coals and usually require major revisions before the journal will accept the article for publication.  So scientists have thick skin about heavy criticism – the good news is that the critique and revision makes the final product much stronger.

Please read and study the original paper, assigned in Week 3, then submit a 2 page review of the article that answers the following questions:

For one of the experiments in Riege & Sigurgeirsson –

  1. What was the hypothesis of this experiment? (Reminder: Hypothesis is a statement.) What question(s) was (were) the investigator asking?

2. Which is the control group? Why?

3. Which is the treatment group? Why?

4. Did the researchers follow the scientific method in their experimental design?  Explain.

5. Do you think that there may be any possible biases or other problems in this experiment?  Explain.

6. Based on the data, was the hypothesis supported, and what can you conclude from this experiment?
