• Have you forged valuable friendships in this class?
• Do you feel that you understand more about social issues now than before?
• Is your personality in class different from that outside of it?
• Did the diversity of the class affect the way you learned?
• What are the stories that are valuable for people to read?

Gender Studies:
• What have stories taught you about the history of female/male relationships?
• What stories gave you insight into the opposite sex?
• Based on the stories, which is the best gender?
Economics:
• What have the stories taught you about the history of economics?
• Was the amount of time studying the concepts of the class worth the price of the class?
• Did the economic backgrounds of the authors affect the characters and their world perspectives?
• Do you think education, no matter the subject, will lead to a more prosperous life?

Develop a control chart based on this data (using 3s control limits) and explain what the chart

The Balston Healthcare System uses SPC charts extensively to monitor various quality indicators and improve processes at its hospitals. One of the hospitals has discovered a potential problem in hand hygiene among its nursing staff. Lack of hand hygiene can be a major cause of fatal hospital-borne infections. The Centers for Disease Control has established criteria for hand hygiene in hospitals and the hospital suspects it is not meeting these criteria. When the CDC published the criteria for hand hygiene the first of January the hospital began collecting data—it sampled 150 opportunities for hand hygiene each week and recorded how many times hand hygiene was actually practiced according to the CDC criteria. The data showed a deficiency in hand hygiene among the nurses in the first six weeks and in Week 7 a program to improve hand hygiene among the nurses was implemented with a goal of consistently reaching a target value of meeting 90% of all hand hygiene opportunities. Following is a table showing the data for the year.

The influence of consequential ethics as an ethical framework (the greatest good for the greatest number) opposes the ethical principle of deontology (i.e., the rightness of an act itself determines what is right)

Theoretical Foundations For Nursing

MODULE 7

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION

A

The influence of consequential ethics as an ethical framework (the greatest good for the greatest number) opposes the ethical principle of deontology (i.e., the rightness of an act itself determines what is right). Both of these impact the nursing profession. Modern social exchange theories are based on the principle of utility. Read the assumptions of social exchange theory and consider how these would affect the nurse-patient relationship, compared to how these impact the nurse within the health care environment. To what extent are all theories ethical? Is social exchange theory compatible with the values of the nursing profession?

B

Which among the learning theories provided you with new information? How would you apply this in your practice?

Using the area of interest from Week 1, identify the following.

· Will you be using a quantitative or qualitative approach for your EBP project proposal? QUANTITATIVE

· Explain why this approach is the best one to provide information for your area of interest. BECAUSE ITS GOING TO SHOW EFFECTIVENESS OF PARENTS GIVING THEIR NEWBORNS VACCINES AFTER THE “EDUCATION PROGRAM” HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED

· Create a PICOT/PICo question using the PICOT/PICo format for quantitative and PICo for qualitative approaches.

· Identify your practice question, being sure to include the following.

  • For a quantitative approach
  • A         questioning part such as “what is,” “what are,”         “is there,” or “are there”
  • Population         being studied
  • Variables         being studied
  • Suggestion         of the relationship between variables
  • For a qualitative approach
    • Phenomenon        or concept of interest
    • Group        or population of interest
    • Suggestion of which        qualitative research design is being used

MY PICO(T) QUESTION FOR QUANTITATIVE

Population: the population of interest is parents of newborns

Intervention: The suggested intervention is an education program to bring an understanding of the importance of vaccinations specifically Vitamin K, hepatitis B, and erythromycin eye ointment within 12 hours of birth. During this intervention, parent that decide to vaccinate or not vaccinate their newborns after participating in the education program will be measured.

Comparison: Mothers who decide to give newborn vaccinations at birth versus

mothers who don’t.

Outcome: The anticipated result was that education would increase parental knowledge about vaccination acceptance leading to more children receiving their newborn vaccinations at birth.

Time: The proposed time intervals for the above project problem will be about three to four-month period.

Are there parties other than clinicians and patients, such as family members, who have an interest in clinical decisions?

Let’s have a debate!!! Is nursing theory important to the nursing profession? If you believe that it is important, explain why it is useful. If you do not believe that it is useful, explain why nursing theory is not necessary to the profession? Be sure to provide an example that demonstrates your opinion and a scholarly reference (not using the required textbook or lesson) which supports your opinion.

The diversity movement suggests that there is strength in our differences and that our differences enhance each other. At the same time, the movement insists that our differences should not have economic, social, or political consequences. We are entitled to the same access to resources and opportunities regardless of our differences. The human suffering from Hurricane Katrina and the images of victims has stimulated the debate about differential access to resources.
Read the report Women in the Wake of the Storm: Examining the Post-Katrina Realities of the Women of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. On the basis of your reading, create a report, answering the following:
• Discuss the prominent dimensions of diversity revealed as a result of the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
• Discuss factors that specifically influenced women’s vulnerability to Hurricane Katrina. While answering, consider the primary dimensions mentioned in the lectures as well as the secondary dimensions such as parental and marital status, income, educational level, military experience, geographic location, work background, and religious beliefs.
• Describe the implications for healthcare organizations as a result of the disaster.
• Discuss at least of two of the policy implications that are outlined in the report. If you were given the task to add another policy recommendation what would it be and why?

Medical Indications: The Principles of Beneficence and Nonmaleficence
1. What is the patient’s medical problem? Is the problem acute? Chronic? Critical? Reversible? Emergent? Terminal?
2. What are the goals of treatment?
3. In what circumstances are medical treatments not indicated?
4. What are the probabilities of success of various treatment options?
5. In sum, how can this patient be benefited by medical and nursing care, and how can harm be avoided?
Patient Preferences: The Principle of Respect for Autonomy
1. Has the patient been informed of benefits and risks, understood this information, and given consent?
2. Is the patient mentally capable and legally competent, and is there evidence of incapacity?
3. If mentally capable, what preferences about treatment is the patient stating?
4. If incapacitated, has the patient expressed prior preferences?
5. Who is the appropriate surrogate to make decisions for the incapacitated patient?
6. Is the patient unwilling or unable to cooperate with medical treatment? If so, why?
Quality of Life: The Principles of Beneficence and Nonmaleficence and Respect for Autonomy
1. What are the prospects, with or without treatment, for a return to normal life, and what physical, mental, and social deficits might the patient experience even if treatment succeeds?
2. On what grounds can anyone judge that some quality of life would be undesirable for a patient who cannot make or express such a judgment?
3. Are there biases that might prejudice the provider’s evaluation of the patient’s quality of life?
4. What ethical issues arise concerning improving or enhancing a patient’s quality of life?
5. Do quality-of-life assessments raise any questions regarding changes in treatment plans, such as forgoing life-sustaining treatment?
6. What are plans and rationale to forgo life-sustaining treatment?
7. What is the legal and ethical status of suicide?
Contextual Features: The Principles of Justice and Fairness
1. Are there professional, interprofessional, or business interests that might create conflicts of interest in the clinical treatment of patients?
2. Are there parties other than clinicians and patients, such as family members, who have an interest in clinical decisions?
3. What are the limits imposed on patient confidentiality by the legitimate interests of third parties?
4. Are there financial factors that create conflicts of interest in clinical decisions?
5. Are there problems of allocation of scarce health resources that might affect clinical decisions?
6. Are there religious issues that might influence clinical decisions?
7. What are the legal issues that might affect clinical decisions?
8. Are there considerations of clinical research and education that might affect clinical decisions?
9. Are there issues of public health and safety that affect clinical decisions?
10. Are there conflicts of interest within institutions and organizations (e.g., hospitals) that may affect clinical decisions and patient welfare?

Explain the concepts of positive psychology to Juanita.

Positive Psychology and Spirituality

Substance abuse counseling lends itself nicely to the integration of positive psychology and spirituality. While both of these therapy approaches have been explored for many years, the integration into substance abuse counseling is a relatively new development. As such, many clients may not be aware of the techniques in positive psychology and spirituality that can be of use in their recovery.
Juanita has been seeking treatment for her marijuana use from you for a month now. While she has significantly cut back on her substance use, she is having difficulty quitting and remaining abstinent for periods that last longer than a few days. In your counseling sessions, Juanita has mentioned that she feels very badly about herself—she feels guilty about being unable to quit and explains that she doesn’t think she is strong enough to quit altogether. She has also expressed nervousness that her boyfriend would no longer like her if she quit smoking, and she has expressed concern that if he leaves her, she wouldn’t be able to find a new boyfriend because she doesn’t believe she is pretty enough. Juanita is also unsatisfied with her job as a cashier at the local grocery store, but has expressed her opinion that she doesn’t think she is smart enough to get a better job. You know from Juanita’s history, that her mother was very critical of Juanita when she was a child and that her father was absent for most of her childhood. In high school, Juanita excelled at classes in biology and math, but she never attended college.
To help Juanita overcome her barriers to marijuana abstinence, write a summary of what the counselor should cover in the next meeting with Juanita. Ensure that you cover the following points:

  • Explain the concepts of positive psychology to Juanita.
  • Examine the goals of positive psychology and explain how this approach will help Juanita obtain sobriety, focusing specifically on the concerns and dissatisfactions she has expressed.
  • Design at least two exercises based on positive psychology for Juanita to work on in between counseling sessions.
  • Explain spirituality to Juanita, emphasizing the differences between spirituality and religion.
  • Examine how spirituality and positive psychology can work together to help Juanita achieve her goals.

Write a 4–5-page paper in Word format. Use scholarly resources, including the textbook to support your ideas. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.
