Public policy that relates to nursing, healthcare, and/or the public that needs to be changed

Public policy that relates to nursing, healthcare, and/or the public that needs to be changed

The IOM Future of Nursing report calls for an increase in leadership from nurses at all levels. One way nurses demonstrate their role as a leader, is through public policy change. A leader does not always carry an official title or position, but demonstrates leadership through the work and the stance he/she takes to make a change for the good of others. Nurses have been noted by the Gallop poll year after year as the most trusted professionals.

This assignment requires thought about a public policy that is needed or needs to be changed that relates to nursing, healthcare, and/or the public. Policy changes can occur by working with members of your legislature, and state or national nurses associations, to introduce a new bill and/or change to a current law in your state or federal government.

Examples of public policy includes any component of the current legislation governing health care, Medicare part D, Medicaid, nursing regulation, medication technicians, etc.

In 750-1000 words, propose a health policy change (that is currently a bill, a law, or may not exist at all) at the state or federal level that you believe needs to change and why.

  1. The policy must NOT be a clinical care policy for individual care. The policy involved may include public or community health, legislative or regulatory, professional organization (nursing-oriented), advanced nursing practice, health plan, or hospital plan.
  2. Include a specific section for the exact wording for the bill or change in wording of the law.
  3. Include the plan for the implementation of your policy development, to lobbying for passage, to next steps after passage.
  4. Discuss who would be the champion for the bill/law change from your state advocates (legislators, federal legislators, local or national state nursing organizations). Are these individuals also influential in making changes occur? Did you vote for the individual in office that you want to help you make this change?

Resources:

  1. Review different pieces of legislation for ideas on wording.
  2. Visit your state’s legislative governmental affairs website site to understand the process your policy change could take if you wanted to introduce to into legislation.
  3. Refer to the Nursing Leadership Health Policy Presentation Rubric.
  4. Submit the assignment to the instructor by the end of Topic 2.

Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

You are required to submit this Public policy that relates to nursing, healthcare, and/or the public that needs to be changed assignment to Turnitin. Refer to the directions in the Student Success Center.

Supporting Health Behavior Change

Supporting Health Behavior ChangeAssignment Instructions and Grading Rubric

Short Paper: Supporting Health Behavior Change

Many factors combine to influence individual and population health. Individual health behaviors significantly impact overall health. Health behaviors contribute significantly to population health (Booske, Athens, Kindig, Park, & Remington, 2010). Despite knowledge of the compelling evidence of the benefits, actually changing one’s health behaviors can be a more complex and challenging process than imagined.

Poly Ryan proposed the Integrated Theory of Health Behavior Change (ITHBC) that purports “health behavior change can be enhanced by fostering knowledge and beliefs, increasing self-regulation skills and abilities, and enhancing social facilitation” (Ryan, 2009, p. 165). Read this article to gain a better understanding of the factors that facilitate health behavior change.

For this assignment, you will select ONE health behavior change that can positively impact population health in general. The health behavior does not necessarily relate to your CHA or CHIP health concern or population. You may want to select a health behavior change that you have considered making yourself.

Submit a brief paper (2 pages, in APA format) that addresses the following:

· Describe the targeted health behavior, and summarize the impact of that health behavior on chronic conditions.

· Summarize the ITHBC and describe how it can be used to facilitate health behavior change.

· Design at least two specific interventions to support health behavior change that reflect the ITHBC (or critique two existing programs or interventions using the standards of the ITHBC).

Exploring Lifespan Development (3rd ed.). Boston: Pearson Education, Inc

Your textbook mentions daycare/childcare in a couple of sections (you’ll read about it next week as well).  After you’ve read all the reading for this week, answer the following questions. Don’t make this a political response (“I like . . . don’t like childcare”) but use it as an example to pull together and apply core concepts from the two chapters for the week.
Divide your answer into three sections (use a heading for each section)
1. What would be necessary in a childcare setting to stimulate full development during infancy and toddler hood? Think of physical/motor, cognitive, language, personality and sociocultural development. Don’t write a book but pick out main points and make it clear that you are applying text content.
2. Based on the chapters’ content, what could go wrong in development because of a daycare setting? What would be the optimum daycare environment to complete development?
3. What would you as a parent contribute to the development of your child that daycare can’t?
In your answer, make sure you address all of the questions asked and draw in text material that applies (cite correctly per APA)

Asthma And Stepwise Management

Asthma And Stepwise Management

Asthma is a respiratory disorder that affects children and adults. Advanced practice nurses often provide treatment to patients with these disorders. Sometimes patients require immediate treatment making it essential that you recognize and distinguish minor asthma symptoms from serious, life-threatening symptoms. Since symptoms and attacks are often induced by a trigger, advanced practice nurses must also help patients identify their triggers and recommend appropriate management options. Like many other disorders, there are various approaches to treating and managing care for asthmatic patients depending on individual patient factors. One method that supports the clinical decision-making of drug therapy plans for asthmatic patients is the stepwise approach, which you explore in this Assignment.

To prepare:

· Consider drugs used to treat asthmatic patients including long-term control and quick relief treatment options for patients. Think about the impact these drugs might have on patients including adults and children.

· Review Chapter 25 of the Arcangelo and Peterson text. Reflect on using the stepwise approach to asthma treatment and management.

· Consider how stepwise management assists health care providers and patients in gaining and maintaining control of the disease.

What to do:

· Describe long-term control and quick relief treatment options for asthma patients, as well as the impact these drugs might have on patients.

· Explain the stepwise approach to asthma treatment and management.

· Explain how stepwise management assists health care providers and patients in gaining and maintaining control of the disease.

Please pay attention to drug-drug interactions.

Causes of Population Changes.

Discussion

Introduction

Worldwide, life is experiencing dramatic extinction on a scale only matched by a handful of events in the history of our planet. The actions of human society appear to be all or part of the cause of most species extinctions documented in human history. Conservation biologists work to understand animal and plant populations in an effort to develop strategies to prevent species from going extinct. In class we discussed bird populations, how they are studied, and some of the most common causes of changes in bird populations.

Assignment

Goal: Students will expand on the framework established in class by studying and thinking about changes in the population of a bird species, how the change was detected, what may have caused the change, and what actions they suggest to address the change. Each student will select one species of bird from a list provided by the instructor. Students may select a species that is not on the list with the instructor’s approval. Each student will write about a different bird species.

Submit a 3-5 page essay, structured as follows:

1. Introduction. Very briefly, provide some basic information about your bird species. What does it look like? What does it eat? What is its preferred habitat? In what part of the world is it found? These basic questions will help inform your thinking in subsequent sections.

2. Population Changes. Research the history of your bird species. Is it common? Endangered? Extinct? In what ways has its population changed? How were the population changes detected?

3. Causes of Population Changes. What reasons have been proposed for the changes in the population of your bird species? What do you think have been the most important causes? Why do you think the cause or causes you named are the most important?

4. Plan for the Future. Now is your opportunity to think like a conservation ornithologist. Is the population of your bird species secure? Are dramatic measures needed to save your bird species from extinction? Propose actions that you think will allow your bird species to thrive for centuries to come.

Bioethics

I NEED A POSITIVE COMMENT BASED IN THIS ARGUMENT…BETWEEN 150-200 WORDS
I am very much enjoying the author’s voice in “Bioethics: A Primer for Christians.” I am probably one of the only non-Christians in this class, so I find Meilaender’s style approachable and his explanations of the Christian religion easy to follow and understand. I appreciate the preface where he says “all are welcome and invited to listen in.” I am grateful for this opportunity to learn more about the Christian religion, as the majority of my patients in west Michigan are of this faith! I like that he points out the revisions he has made over time as science has changed over the years. I think it is important to continually examine individual beliefs and be open to changes in perspective without compromising core values and beliefs. Healthy, respectful discussions with our peers are essential in these changing times.
“We need not, I think, fear that seeking medical help necessarily demonstrates lack of trust or faith on our part. Rather, it indicates only that we trust God to care for us mediately – through the love and concern of others” (Meilaender, 2013). I think this is a beautiful statement on the analysis of disease and healing. God can present Himself in indirect ways, such as through the healing hands of a doctor or nurse. If a patient is struggling with a diagnosis, going to the hospital for modern treatment does not mean they do not have faith in God. Just as people rely on their church communities for emotional and spiritual support, they can come to the hospital with physical symptoms and be treated without judgment from other people. As nurses, if we try to see each patient as God sees them, no matter who they are or what they may have done in life, we truly are serving these people and their families.
I’ve had people I just met hug me and thank me for what I do when they find out I’m an oncology nurse. This surprised me early on in my career, but then the person would go on to tell me a story of someone close to them who had cancer. People associate us with healing, and sometimes a hug from a stranger can be just the sign someone needs that God is watching over them.
