One of the first and most serious examples of cases involving social media and a juvenile’s victimization is that of Megan Meier. Meier was harassed, bullied, and told that the world would be better off without her by a person she thought was a young boy her age and a potential relationship partner; in reality, the profile had been created by an adult female who was the mother of one of Meier’s peers (Meredith, 2010). The online harassment through social media went on for weeks before Meier eventually hanged herself. The perpetrator, Lori Drew, had developed a relationship disguised as a young male with Meier in order to gain information and had used this false relationship to tear her down. Sadly, the only way to prosecute Drew was through her misuse of social media according to My Space’s user agreement (2010).

Two challenges related to juvenile victimization through social media are the lack of specific laws to address this type of victimization and the constant developments in technology and social media. Law has continued to develop to try and keep up with technological changes, but will not always be able to keep up. This is definitely a problem, as technology/social media based crimes occur, but may not be able to be prosecuted accordingly. Also, with the new developments, juveniles are the experts in social media. They understand more about what to do than many adults, which makes it much harder for parents and other adults to monitor the use of social media for positive or negative uses.

The Student Internet Safety Act of 2009 was legislation established to help prevent cyberbullying through education (Meredith, 2010). This was enacted to help fully educate students about appropriate behaviors using technology to prevent them from using technology for criminal victimization and to prevent themselves from becoming victims. This could definitely be beneficial for the students that it is able to impact; it will not help with the victimization by older people, but will aid students in being more aware and able to report behavior that they think is questionable to a trusted individual.
