In what ways might qualitative research be more preferred than quantitative research for informing nursing practice?

Question description

Basic Characteristics of Qualitative Research

As a nursing professional, you will likely engage in research for your health care setting. Depending on the research question you seek to address, you might choose to use a qualitative research design. Understanding when and why it is appropriate to choose a qualitative research design will be important as you develop research skills for nursing practice. As you continue throughout this course, think about what considerations you should keep in mind when choosing to engage in qualitative research. In what ways might qualitative research be more preferred than quantitative research for informing nursing practice?

For this Discussion, be sure to review the qualitative article by Sarvestani et al. (2015). Then, view this week’s Qualitative Research Design PowerPoint webinar that describes each step of the qualitative research process and different approaches used to conduct qualitative research.

By Day 3

You will need to prepare and post at least 350-word response that addresses the following:

  • Qualitative research often is viewed as not having the same rigor and adherence to objective standards as quantitative studies. Using the references provided to assist you, prepare an argument to either support or refute this claim and post it to the Discussion. In your response, explain if qualitative research does or does not have the controls needed to generate the results that contribute to the nursing knowledge base.
  • Then, explain if qualitative research could be used to investigate the patient safety problem you identified in Week 1.

Note: Post a three paragraph (at least 350 words) response. Be sure to use evidence from the readings and include in-text citations. Utilize essay-levelwriting practice and skills, including the use of transitional material and organizational frames. Use the writing resources to develop your post.

By Day 7

Read two or more of your colleagues’ postings from the Discussion question.

Respond to two or more of your colleagues with a comment that asks for clarification, provides support for, or contributes additional information.

Post a Discussion entry on 3 different days of the week. See the Rubric for more information.

Click on the Reply button below to reveal the textbox for entering your message. Then click on the Submit button to post your message.

Mr. Jones appears fine, his vital signs are stable, heart rate is slightly irregular, but he calls the nurse frequently to ask questions that do not relate to his diagnosis of atrial fibrillation.

Discussion 1 – Question 2

After completing the Critical Thinking Inventory on pages 341-345, share what you found out about your own critical thinking skills that relate to “confidence”, “intuition”, “discrimination” and “predicting”. Use examples from your nursing practice or experience to discuss how you may be able to improve your critical thinking.
For example, share how you currently consider specific assessment data and how you may be able to improve the critical thinking process to improve patient outcomes and quality of care. Example:

  • Mr. Jones appears fine, his vital signs are stable, heart rate is slightly irregular, but he calls the nurse frequently to ask questions that do not relate to his diagnosis of atrial fibrillation. He seems very “needy.”
  • Reflect on the patient, his previous history of heart problems, considering that his anxiety level may be high due to possible complications from the atrial fibrillation (stroke) or other issues.
  • Create an action plan to talk with him about his condition, his previous experiences with his health care, and answer all questions that he may have.

Please support your initial discussion and opinions with at least two citations from the assigned readings, or peer-reviewed professional nursing literature.

What are notable issues on gender-role development in society today and how are we as a family and society reacting?

Our last forum will look at social development. Please answer the following three questions in your initial posting.
1-How is social learning linked to academic learning?
2-How are schools providing for social development for children?
3-What are notable issues on gender-role development in society today and how are we as a family and society reacting?
Emotional and Social Development in Early Childhood
The focus of this lesson is the emotional and social development in early childhood. It is critical that, during a child’s early years, he or she is exposed to great variety of experiences that contribute to healthy social and emotional growth. Furthermore, this lesson will focus on the ways in which children develop a sense of self. When children interact with peers, they also advance in their social skills and social development. Finally, being aware of the different roles that genetic and environmental influences play on gender-role development will lead to greater understanding of gender expectations for these young children.
TOPICS TO BE COVERED INCLUDE:
· The development of the aspects of the self
· Peer sociability
· Moral development
· Gender-role development
Development of Aspects of the Self
As children learn to talk and their language skills improve, they become more self-aware as seen in the ways in which they subjectively talk about themselves. As children become able to understand their self-concept ‒ their attributes, attitudes, abilities, and qualities that make them unique ‒ they truly begin to develop a sense of self-awareness. This self-awareness has a profound impact on a child’s emotional and social life. Additionally, self-esteem is also affected by children’s awareness of self.
Self-Awareness
· RECOGNIZING SELF AS SEPARATE
· SELF-AWARENESS GROWS
· REFERRING TO SELF BY NAME
· PREFERENCES AND EMOTIONS
In infancy children develop an awareness of their body. As children continue to age, they begin to understand that they are separate beings from others. For example, during late toddlerhood, children learn that they have different emotional states, different characteristics (physical and emotional) and different actions or responses from others.
Psychosocial Developmental Stages
This self-awareness development corresponds to the second stage of Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Development. Click on the icons to read about the milestones for each stage.

What disorder was most likely being treated by this operation, and how is the surgery performed?

By the due date assigned, submit your response to the appropriate Discussion Area. Use the same Discussion Area to comment on your classmates’ submissions through the end of the module.
The following website contains links to research projects on treatment for drug abuse currently being funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Browse the various studies underway and choose a clinical trial that assesses a potential treatment.

  • Summarize the study for your classmates.
  • Explain whether this treatment would be characterized as a behavioral intervention or a drug/pharmacological intervention.
  • Explain how this intervention relates to any of the drug treatments you read about this module.
  • Identify the physiological changes this treatment might bring about. For example, will a particular neurochemical be altered by this drug or behavior?By the due date assigned, create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation to educate a group of medical students participating in their grand rounds. There should be at least ten slides in your Microsoft PowerPoint as well as a title slide and a slide listing all your sources for creating this slideshow. You should also create speaker notes for each slide of your presentation, which include the main talking points for the topic addressed on the slide. Save the presentation as AU_PSY350_M3_A2_LastName_FirstInitial.ppt. Submit your assignment to the Submissions Area.
In order to create your slideshow, review the two case studies and then answer the questions following each case study:
Case Study 1: Isaac is a fifty-nine-year-old man. Several months ago, he noticed a slight tremor in his hands. He assumed this to be a normal consequence of aging. The tremor, however, gradually worsened, along with some muscular stiffness and slowness in initiating movement. The tremor was more pronounced when he was not voluntarily moving. Isaac was referred to a neurologist, who diagnosed him with Parkinson’s disease. After visiting the neurologist, Isaac and his family ask you to further explain this disorder. Isaac also asks about L-dopa as a treatment—the neurologist had mentioned L-dopa as an effective medication but had instead prescribed selegiline:

    • What are the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease?
    • What are the possible causes? Be sure to discuss both hereditary and environmental factors thought to contribute to this disease.
    • What parts of the brain does this disease affect?
    • Why do you think the neurologist prescribed selegiline instead of L-dopa?

Case Study 2: Sabrina is a twenty-seven-year-old woman who recently underwent a corpus callosotomy. Initially after surgery, when given a verbal command, Sabrina demonstrated marked apraxia of the left hand. However, the extent of this issue diminished over time. Answer the following questions about this client:

    • What disorder was most likely being treated by this operation, and how is the surgery performed?
    • In what way is the surgery expected to help Sabrina?
    • What are the risks and benefits of the surgery? Compare these to the risks and benefits of an alternative treatment. If the decision were yours, which would you recommend? Explain your decision.
    • What was the cause of the apraxia?
    • What does the reduction in apraxia symptoms tell us about hemispheric specialization?

Describe the pathophysiological mechanisms of chronic asthma and acute asthma exacerbation. Assignment: Asthma

Describe the pathophysiological mechanisms of chronic asthma and acute asthma exacerbation.
Assignment: Asthma

Complications of asthma can be sudden. Consider the case of Bradley Wilson, a young boy who had several medical conditions. He appeared in good health when he went to school, returned home, and ate dinner. However, when he later went outside to play, he came back inside wheezing. An ambulance took him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead (Briscoe, 2012). In another case, 10-year-old Dynasty Reese, who had mild asthma, woke up in the middle of the night and ran to her grandfather’s bedroom to tell him she couldn’t breathe. By the time paramedics arrived, she had passed out and was pronounced dead at the hospital (Glissman, 2012). These situations continue to outline the importance of recognizing symptoms of asthma and providing immediate treatment, as well as distinguishing minor symptoms from serious, life-threatening symptoms. Since these symptoms and attacks are often induced by a trigger, as an advanced practice nurse, you must be able to help patients identify their triggers and recommend appropriate treatment options. For this reason, you need to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of chronic asthma and acute asthma exacerbation.

To Prepare

Review “Asthma” in Chapter 26 of the Huether and McCance text. Identify the pathophysiological mechanisms of chronic asthma and acute asthma exacerbation. Consider how these disorders are similar and different.
Select a patient factor different from the one you selected in this week’s Discussion: genetics, gender, ethnicity, age, or behavior. Think about how the factor you selected might impact the pathophysiology of both disorders. Reflect on how you would diagnose and prescribe treatment of these disorders for a patient based on the factor you selected.
Review the “Mind maps—Dementia, Endocarditis, and Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)” media in the Week 2 Learning Resources. Use the examples in the media as a guide to construct two mind maps—one for chronic asthma and one for acute asthma exacerbation. Consider the epidemiology and clinical presentation of both chronic asthma and acute asthma exacerbation.

Explain why it might be possible to have low levels of thyroid‐ stimulating hormone and high levels of thyroid hormone.

Helena is a 51-year-old tele-marketing professional. She recently started losing weight without trying, which she found to be quite satisfying! At the same time, she also noticed that she feels quite hot when others around her do not complain of the heat.

Helena thought she was probably getting the menopause, as she knows that this is often characterised by hot flushes. She tires easily, but put this down to working long hours and getting older. None of these symptoms gave Helena any real cause for alarm. However, what made her think that there might be something wrong is the increasing amount of heart palpitations she has she can feel her heart racing quite quickly.

Helena has been feeling more anxious and suspects that this is because her fast heart rate makes her quite worried. So she decides to seek medical attention. Physical examination reveals tachycardia (a high heart rate of 109 beats per minute), hyper tension (high blood pressure of 150/90) and a high respiratory rate (22 breaths per minute). Her eyes appear somewhat wide open and there is an enlargement in the anterior (front) of her neck.

Questions

Which endocrine disorder is consistent with Helena’s signs and symptoms? It refers you to find out the name of endocrine disorder and their symptoms consistent with Helena’s signs and symptoms.
Discuss the enlargement found in Helena’s neck.
Explain why it might be possible to have low levels of thyroid‐ stimulating hormone and high levels of thyroid hormone.
Relate Helena’s symptoms to your diagnosis of the disorder? Ask you to think how you diagnose the disorder (as clinical nurse – nursing diagnosis) in relation to Helena signs and symptoms
