Why are coding standards important for promoting consistent, high-quality care? Scope and Standards of Practice. Determine which set of terminologies are appropriate for your specialty or area of expertise.

Discussion: Standardized Coding Systems
As a result of the fragmented nature of the health care system, professionals in various specialty areas of medicine have developed their own unique sets of terminology to communicate within that specialty. In the past, limited attention has been given to codifying practices in order for them to be understood and utilized across disciplines or through different information technology systems. The implementation of a federally mandated electronic medical records system, therefore, poses a challenge to nursing professionals and others who must be prepared to utilize standardized codes for the new system. Why are coding standards important for promoting consistent, high-quality care?

According to Rutherford (2008, para. 15), “Improved communication with other nurses, health care professionals, and administrators of the institution in which nurses work is a key benefit of using a standardized nursing language.” In this Discussion you consider the reasoning behind and the value of standardized codification.

To prepare

Review the information in Nursing Informatics: Scope and Standards of Practice. Determine which set of terminologies are appropriate for your specialty or area of expertise.
Reflect on the importance of continuity in terminology and coding systems.
In the article, “Standardized Nursing Language: What Does It Mean for Nursing Practice?” the author recounts a visit to a local hospital to view its implementation of a new coding system. One of the nurses commented to her, “We document our care using standardized nursing languages but we don’t fully understand why we do” (Rutherford, 2008, para. 1). Consider how you would inform this nurse (and others like her) of the importance of standardized nursing terminologies.
Reflect on the value of using a standard language in nursing practice. Consider if standardization can be limited to a specialty area or if one standard language is needed across all nursing practice. Then, identify examples of standardization in your own specialty or area of expertise. Conduct additional research using the Walden Library that supports your thoughts on standardization of nursing terminology.
By Day 3
Post an explanation of why nurses need to document care using standardized nursing languages and whether this standardization can be limited to specialty areas or if it should be across all nursing practice. Support your response using specific examples from your own specialty or area of expertise and using at least one additional resource from the Walden Library.

Describe the steps of a standard addictions assessment and reflect on the importance of using a multidisciplinary team.
Steps of Addictions Assessment Processes

Addiction may take many forms. A person may be addicted to a substance, such as cocaine, or a behavior, such as gambling. Individuals who enter into addictions assessment generally have exhibited certain hallmarks of addiction, such as an increase in the behavior, problems in relationships and life functioning, and withdrawal symptoms upon ceasing the behavior.

Someone with a potential addiction may be facing a host of issues. He or she might require medical and/or legal help. A teenager may be a minor requiring parental consent for any treatment and might already be receiving help from a guidance counselor or school psychologist. It is true that individual assessments have unique features and should be tailored to the needs of and aspects related to each individual being assessed. However, there are important steps common to most assessments that allow addictions professionals to gather reliable, valid, and relevant information about the clients they serve, as well as to enlist the best set of professionals to form the multidisciplinary team.

This week, you describe the steps of a standard addictions assessment and reflect on the importance of using a multidisciplinary team.

To prepare:

Review the Learning Resources, including the following:

Chemical Dependency Counseling: A Practical Guide

Chapter 1, “The First Contact”
Chapter 14, “The Clinical Staff”
Assignment Directions:

Submit by Sunday 3/5/17 a 2- to 4-page paper that includes the following:

The steps of an addictions assessment
An explanation of why each step is important
One example of a multidisciplinary team and the contribution each of the team members might make to the assessment
Cite your sources using APA guidelines.

Answer all components in the assignment as there are usually several. These can serve as your headings in APA format. Using these headings will help keep your paper organized, ensure you cover all objectives, and enhance readability. You may find that if you bullet-point these requirements and refer to them as you write, you will address all of the portions of the question.

Evidence-Based Change
Locate an article from a peer-reviewed nursing journal where a practice change was made based on research, preferably a change that could relate to your area of practice or organization. Note: You are seeking to find an evidence-based article that describes some change in practice that was based on research; this is all about applying research, not doing research. Thus, you are not looking for a research article, but you are looking for an article that uses evidence from research to make a change.
Describe the change made and comment on the strength of the research evidence utilized and the whether the change led to improved patient outcomes.
Note any barriers to change that were identified and how they were overcome.
End your discussion with a reflection on how this article is useful to you as you consider your role as an advanced practice nurse leading others to use the best evidence to strengthen nursing practice and improve nursing-sensitive patient outcomes.

The Institute of Medicine’s report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, addresses the need for nursing leadership; it discusses the potential for nursing to lead improvement and redesign the healthcare delivery system. Take a look at the video Transforming Care at the Bedside: Empowering Better Nursing Care to see what some nurses have done to improve healthcare in their facilities. Based on your nursing experience, what change would you like to implement to improve care? What are the first steps you would take to implement the change?
How can community-based participatory research and patient-centered outcomes research approaches be used in conducting nursing research? These are both incredible topics for discussion in healthcare today. No doubt you have experience with one or both topics to share. Resources are welcome but not required in this discussion topic.

Data Communications – from it’s origins and moving forward, Healthcare might be cordoned into two distinct highways, one of delivering prevention and one of delivering sick care. It’s very difficult to provide them both with absolute quality although many health systems throughout the U.S. attempt to be all things to all people in serving their communities. This being said, health education is often times confused with prevention interventions. Therefore, systems miss individuals and chronic preventable illness continues to rise as well as expenditures.

At this point and almost through your course work for the MPH Informatics, you have accumulated enough knowledge to articulate science and evidence based facts, thoughts, on topics in healthcare. Remember, finding your voice as experts moving forward. With this in mind, if you had to choose working on either the sick care side or prevention side of healthcare, which side would you choose? Based on the development of health information technology, HIT, platforms today and potential for the near future, please defend your choice and cite your sources. Some key word examples, the benefits of health information technology in treating a sick population; health information technology as a chronic disease prevention tool. This paper should be no less than 10 pages explaining the type of HIT you would implement, it’s strengths, it’s limitations, has it been successfully used, within which populations, the impact and outcomes achieved or that may be achievable within the side of sick care or prevention you choose to work on.Looking forward to some good and solid thoughts.

Write a 1,400- to 1,700-word paper in which you identify each issue and make recommendations to JC, the casino president, on how to improve overall retention.

Improving Organization Retention Paper

Read the following scenario:

You are an independent consultant who has recently been hired by JC’s Casino to help improve retention issues concerning the dealers and housekeepers.  Most of the dealers have been leaving the casino to work at other casinos in the area, even though JC’s Casino pays better than their local competition.  On several exit interviews, many of the dealers have cited the pit boss, Joe, as being “toxic, overbearing, evil, and incompetent.”  Joe is the casino owner’s step-son and the HR director, Tom Sneed, is afraid to confront the owner.

Among the housekeeping staff, there has been an above normal rate of absenteeism and high turnover of rooms.  Many of the managers who work in accounting, payroll, and other departments have had to ask their full-time employees to help cover for housekeeping by cleaning rooms periodically.  Because of this problem, the hotel has had to adjust their check in times from 3 p.m. (the industry standard) to 6 p.m.  Customers have arrived earlier and the hotel has had to accommodate them by creating a room to hold luggage.  They have also had to hire staff to man the luggage room.

The director of housekeeping, Andrew Keehn, has been working hard to add more staff but he states “good help is hard to find.”  The housekeeper’s current hourly wage is comparable to other casinos in the area but because of the staffing shortage, the housekeepers have to clean more rooms per day than their counterparts.  The casino owner only knows that there are some issues with keeping the dealers and that some customers were upset because they had to wait to check in.  You have been hired for a quick fix and your suggestions were needed yesterday.

Write a 1,400- to 1,700-word paper in which you identify each issue and make recommendations to JC, the casino president, on how to improve overall retention. What the scenario does not provide, you can create. Be sure to include the following in your assessment:

·

Evaluate at least two work motivation theories and how they can be applied in order to improve employee recruitment and retention at JC’s Casino.

·

Examine possible occupational stressors that are negatively influencing recruitment and retention.  What improvements would you suggest to alleviate these stressors?

·

Examine the role of job satisfaction and its influence on retention at the casino. Provide recommendations for improving job satisfaction of the employees and how that can play a part in successfully improving retention.

·

Discuss counterproductive employee behavior occurring at the casino. What suggestions would you make to reduce the counterproductive behavior and increase productive employee behavior?

Include at least four references.

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.
