“SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF TEXT-MESSAGING INTERVENTIONS TO PROMOTE HEALTHY BEHAVIORS IN PEDIATRIC AND ADOLESCENT POPULATIONS: IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE AND RESEARCH”

“SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF TEXT-MESSAGING INTERVENTIONS TO PROMOTE HEALTHY BEHAVIORS IN PEDIATRIC AND ADOLESCENT POPULATIONS: IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE AND RESEARCH”

(LA #3): Read the integrative research review article by Militello, Kelly, and Melnyk (2012) “Systematic Review of Text-Messaging Interventions to Promote Healthy Behaviors in Pediatric and Adolescent Populations: Implications for Clinical Practice and Research”. Then complete a three to four page analysis and critique paper, 750 words. In this critique you will complete both the Synopsis and Credibility components. Appendix D: “Completed Appraisal of Conclusions of an Integrative Research Review” .
Title your page with the following heading:

Citation: Militello, L.K., Kelly, S.A., & Melnyk, B. M. (2012). Systematic Review of Text-Messaging Interventions to Promote Healthy Behaviors in Pediatric and Adolescent Populations: Implications for Clinical Practice and Research. Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing, 9 (2), 66-77. doi: 10.1111/j.1741-6787.2011.00239.x.

Synopsis

1. What topic or question did the integrative research review address?

2. How were potential individual research reports identified?

3. What determined if a study was included in the analysis?

4. How many studies were included in the review?

5. What research designs were used in the selected research studies?

6. What were the consistent and important across-studies conclusions?

Credibility

7. Was the topic clearly defined?

8. Is there a description of the methods used to conduct the review?

9. Was the search for study reports comprehensive and unbiased?

10. Were the studies included in the review assessed for quality?

11. Were the design characteristics and the findings of the studies displayed or discussed in sufficient detail?

12. Was there truly an integration (synthesis) of findings – not merely reporting of findings from each study?

13. If different findings were found between studies, did the reviewers explore why differences in findings might have occurred?

14. Did the reviewers distinguish between conclusions based on consistent findings from a sufficient number of studies and those based on inferior evidence?

15. Which conclusions were supported by consistent findings from two or more studies?

16. Are the conclusions credible?

Conclusion: Conclude the paper with your thoughts about using integrative research reviews to find evidence about clinical practice problems. Is this approach a practice that you could use in your own clinical practice setting?

Compare your demographic information to state or national statistics.

1.Welcome to the Milestone 2 tutorial.
2. This tutorial reviews Milestone 2, your assessment and diagnosis paper. For Milestone 2, you will write an APA paper where you will complete your community assessment, and diagnose one community health nursing problem based on this data. You can find APA resources in your resource folder in your course.
3. Use the headings outlined on these guidelines as first level headings in your paper. There is an APA template in resources that you can use to help with APA formatting.
4. Begin Milestone 2 with an introductory paragraph. Start your paper with an interesting sentence that grabs the attention of the reader. Provide an introduction to your paper, and be sure to include the purpose of your paper related to assessing and diagnosing a community health problem.
Follow this up in Section 2 with a second paragraph that describes your community in a little more detail. Include your community’s name and state. Discuss whether it is rural, suburban, or urban. Describe a few interesting facts about your area.
Next, in the demographic data section, discuss a range of demographic data for your community. Demographic data includes the general statistics that describe the community. This data is found in the U.S. Census Bureau reports (similar to the first part of your Week 2 discussion). Compare your demographic information to state or national statistics.
In the Epidemiological data section, include a range of information about disease rates, health behaviors, or public health problems in your area. This information can be found from your local health department records (on their website), the county health rankings website, or other records, such as those from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Do not use Wikipedia. Most .com websites are not considered scholarly resources. Use this data to paint a picture of your community. Compare your community data to state or national data. Be sure to include statistics that support the problem that you will be discussing later in the paper.
5. The windshield survey section includes a summary of the relevant parts of your windshield survey that was completed for the first Milestone. Be sure to include information about what you observed related to the problem you identify.
Now that you’ve collected the assessment data, you can diagnose the problem and discuss that in the next section. Be sure this is a nursing problem that you consider to be a priority concern. Provide the rationale for your choice, and relate your choice to one of the healthy people numbered objectives, not just a healthy people goal. Be sure that the data you collected and your windshield survey validates this problem. Also, discuss the findings of two scholarly journal articles related to the problem you chose. These articles may discuss factors that contribute to the problem you uncovered, but should not focus on interventions.
The summary section provides a paragraph about your paper and should include a restatement of what you discovered and a statement about the problem. This should also include the population at risk for the problem and the factors that contribute to this problem. Do not include new information in the summary. End with a conclusion statement.
Finally, include a reference page for the complete APA reference of any source you cited in the paper. See the APA documents in resources for help. As always, use the grading rubric to self-grade your paper before submitting it.

Research is Exploratory, research is completed in a person or group’s natural environment, uses ‘how’ and ‘why’ things happen, interactive between researcher and the one being studied, information is subjective

Post a thoughtful response to at least two (2) other colleagues’ initial postings. Responses to colleagues should be supportive and helpful (examples of an acceptable comment are: “This is interesting – in my practice, we treated or resolved (diagnosis or issue) with (x, y, z meds, theory, management principle) and according to the literature…” and add supportive reference. Avoid comments such as “I agree” or “good comment.”

Discussion 1

Qualitative Methods Quantitative Methods
Research is Exploratory, research is completed in a person or group’s natural environment, uses ‘how’ and ‘why’ things happen, interactive between researcher and the one being studied, information is subjective Research completed in numerical form, uses closed-ended questions/yes or no questions, uses statistics to provide a synopsis, information is objective, uses larger sample sizes
Uses personal experience to guide the research Uses theory to guide the research

The objective of this discussion is to first, compare and contrast qualitative and quantitative research, and secondly, to provide one example of each to study a health-care related topic. For example, to study why recommended laboratory tests are not completed by patients, when taking certain medications that can cause harm, a researcher can use both methods of research to complete the study (Fischer et al., 2013, p. 513).
An example of a qualitative approach would be to interview a group of patients who have not completed recommended laboratory testing, and simply asking ‘why’. Since the information received during qualitative research is subjective, there may be several different answers to the question. While working as a nurse at a psychiatrist’s office, I learned that insurance companies require certain labs to be drawn to check for damage to the liver and kidneys, for instance. If the labs were not drawn then the insurance would no longer pay for that particular medication. In my experience, it was common for patients to say that they either forgot to go to the lab or maybe lose the lab order altogether.
If the researcher decides to use a quantitative approach, they may interview a group of patients and get a numerical value of the ones who did not show for the testing vs. the ones who did complete the testing. A table could then be created, labeling the top reasons why testing was not completed and the numerical value of patients that gave those specific answers.
In conclusion, the predominant difference in the two types of research is that qualitative study wants to explain a certain experience, while quantitative study wants to use statistics to answer a question (LoBiondo -Wood & Haber, 2014, p. 9). While we have looked at both studies as individuals, there are many research studies that have been accomplished best by using both approaches.

Discussion 2

QUANTITATIVE METHODS QUALITATIVE METHODS
Hypotheses are stated or implied, random or specific study group with a common similarity uses variables and outcomes. Driven by people’s thoughts, reactions, perceptions, and experiences. Uses focus groups, interviews, recording behavior, and unstructured observation
Variables are measured by instruments or scales; measurable, uses numbers; statistical analyses are used Not measurable; uses ideas, is interpretive, narrative descriptions, words. Lacks statistical testing
Uses deductive reasoning, comprehensive, uses a large number of participants Uses inductive reasoning, specific, uses a small number of participants
Objective- observes but doesn’t participate Subjective- involved as a participant observer
The term “random” or “convenience” is mentioned in the relation to the sample. Also uses case-controlled, clinical trial, experimental group, structured, control group. Uses the terms ethnographic study, field notes, field research, focus group, observation, open ended, and phenomenological

Example of a qualitative approach would be studying the experience of those spouses of Alzheimer’s patients whom had to be placed in a nursing facility. Example of a quantitative approach would be studying the number of falls of Alzheimer’s patients living at home have versus those who are living at a nursing facility over a six month period.

David noted he use to enjoyment going to work, but now, he states some days he would rather just stay home. David married his high school sweetheart. He describes their relationship as “typical.” They eat meals and attend family gatherings together but do little else as a couple. David use to spend his spare time reading, playing golf, and watching TV. For the last 6 months, David has felt blue and his appetite has decreased. He stated he doesn’t have any desire to do any of things he use to enjoy and would rather spend time alone in his bedroom. David complained of irritability and low energy. Within the last 2 months, David noted he has experienced more physical pain in his back and neck area. Because he has not been sleeping well, Robert drinks more at night. He stated that when he was younger, he use to drink more frequently but now he only drinks two or three beers per night. Sometimes, he feels like life is hardly worth living. Robert has tried to “snap himself” out of this sour mood, but nothing seems to work. David oldest son stated he is concerned his father may need to go see a doctor, because his father appears to be acting usual. David stated that his sister used to have similar problems. He is resistant to going to see a doctor and believes his mood will eventually improve.
David’s sister Lisa has struggled with depression for over 10 years. She is currently seeing a psychiatrist and a counselor. In the past, Lisa reported an increase in emotional and physical fatigue, low mood, increased weight gain, and disrupted sleep. Lisa has a negative outlook and states that when things are looking up, something always goes terribly wrong.
