Have American Attitudes on Sexuality Become More Complicated Since the 1960s?
The pill as a method of birth control was introduced in America in 1960. This marked the period of the sexual revolution in the history of America. The pill, unlike previous contraceptives, gave women freedom to control their reproduction and sexuality. Upon its launch, the pill was widely accepted by many as it was claimed to have no health side effects. The prime beneficiaries of the pill were young women and girls who felt that they needed to handle their sexuality matters. Other than granting women sexual liberty, the pill influenced the various forms of sexual identity such as gay men, lesbianism, interracial marriage, and same-sex marriage among others. These sexually related topics dominated the public in an open manner that was different from before. Therefore, the sexual revolution changed the American sexuality issues that became more complicated (Goldin 1).
Before the introduction of the pill, women had limited opportunities with regard to education and professionalism. They often dropped from schools and employment avenues due to pregnancy and would later seek to continue when their kid reached school going age. Similarly, women could not engage in premarital or extramarital sexual relationships given the bad images associated with adultery and promiscuity. Any child born of an unmarried woman would be granted a birth certificate indicated as illegitimate. The mother could also be viewed by the society as promiscuous. These prejudices combined with women oppression in this era gave women a low status in the society (Goldin 3).
The situations illustrated below are representative for the way in which the sexual revolution complicated America’s approach to sexuality.
Increased Cases of Multiple Sexual Partners
It was noted that, the sexual revolution came along with an increased number of cases of multiple sexual partners between unmarried adolescents and adults. Both unmarried men and women engaged in their first sexual encounter at increasingly younger ages. The American culture of late marriage increased the cases of earlier sexual experimentation especially with the launch of the pill and shift of sex goals. This is because the young men and women had more time to gain sexual experience with numerous partners before they entered lifetime monogamous relationships in marriage. Moreover, this led to increased cases of divorce and to lessening of the stigma associated with divorce. These factors increased the desire for married men and women to engage in extra-marital relationships. With the launching of the pill and its consequences, women and men born in the period between 1935 and 1945 had higher instances of premarital exposure than their counterparts who had been born earlier (Cohen n.p).

What arguments can you make for focusing time and resources on children with disabilities, rather than on those considered gifted and talented?

 Psychology homework help

Assignment 2: Discussion—Reflection

In this course, you have learned about the range of exceptionalities in children from low-incidence disabilities to gifted and talented, and also twice-exceptional children.

Given the realities of budget cutbacks, financial challenges, and legal requirements of schools, the focus tends to be on evaluating and providing interventions for students on the disability end of the exceptionalities continuum, rather than on those considered gifted and talented.

Using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research gifted and talented students. Then, reflect on what you have learned throughout this course.

Based on your research, respond to the following:

Part I

  • What arguments can you make for focusing time and resources on children with disabilities, rather than on those considered gifted and talented?
  • What arguments can be made for focusing on those considered gifted and talented?
  • Given what you have learned about the continuum of exceptionalities, what recommendations would you make? Provide reasons to support your answer.

Remember to consider ethical and legal arguments.

Part II

  • Explain why the term exceptionalities includes a continuum from those with low-incidence disabilities to gifted and talented. What do all of these children have in common?
  • Describe something new that you learned, including how it might have changed your viewpoint on children with exceptionalities (such as, how research differs from what you thought was true or how an opinion or perspective was challenged).
  • Discuss something you learned in this course that you would like to continue learning more about. How might you apply this knowledge in your career goals?

Write your initial response in 300–500 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Preparing for the Informational Interview

Assignment 3: Preparing for the Informational Interview

An informational interview is a recommended tool for exploring career options. In M3 Assignment 2, you will submit a written account of the informational interview you conducted with the psychology professional.
You will ask the interviewee to describe the educational and training steps (the career paths) he or she took to reach the current position. You will also ask the interviewee to describe, in some detail, the job responsibilities associated with the position. The interview must be at least thirty minutes long. Ideally, it should be conducted in person. If that is not feasible, a phone interview is adequate.
Begin to prepare for this informational interview by identifying the professional you plan to interview. Ideally, the professional should be engaged in a career that you hope to pursue. (You may want to identify a second candidate in case your initial choice is unable to complete the interview with you.) This professional may work in your local area, but that is not necessary. If you cannot identify a professional easily, ask your friends and family if they know anyone who works in the field of psychology. You may also want to phone your local community mental health center or social services agency to ask for names and contact information of potential professionals you could interview. Contact your facilitator for guidance if you have difficulty in identifying someone.
Tasks
In a 1- to 2-page Microsoft Word document, address the following:

  • Provide the following identifying information about the individual you have selected:
    • The name
    • The job title (licensed psychologist, social worker, or case manager)
    • The level of education (a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree)
    • A description of job responsibilities or day-to-day tasks
    • The type of license, if applicable
    • The state of residence and practice
    • The e-mail address or phone number
  • Develop a list of at least fifteen questions to ask in your informational interview. Research possible questions to include using the Argosy University online library resources and the Internet. Refer to the Job Resources document to conduct an Internet search using the search terms “informational interview questions” in order to find suggested questions. Be sure to put them into your own words for the purpose of this assignment and to give credit to your source by using in-text citations and a reference list in APA format.
  • Ask the interviewee about his or her work, academic preparation, and advice. In addition, include the interviewee’s answers to questions on the following topics:
    • The experience, skills, and knowledge necessary for success in a career in psychology or in graduate school
    • Relevant professional organizations
    • His or her views on professional ethics and academic integrity
    • The role of psychological research in his or her work
    • His or her greatest challenges and rewards
    • His or her reasons for choosing the field

what specific factors would you need to consider when developing this survey?

Imagine you were to create a survey that examined the frequency of drug use in middle school children. Referring back to the considerations for creating surveys presented in this module and in your textbook, what specific factors would you need to consider when developing this survey? Make sure you address considerations related to age (early adolescence) and nature of the topic (drug use).
Class–
For this research question, one issue to consider here is honesty in responding.  So, a survey might best be complemented by other types of designs in this particular scenario.  However, in the context of the survey itself, there are *many* possible strategies and factors to take into consideration, and I would like folks to focus on how we would design the questionnaire instrument itself–what questions would be included, and how would they be worded?  I found this
http://s3.amazonaws.com/SurveyMonkeyFiles/SmartSurvey.pdf
resource that folks might want to take a look at as they consider these issues…. Enjoy!

select a macro systems problem to investigate (there are many suggested in the textbook, e.g. domestic violence, homophobia, sexual abuse, delinquent gangs) and design a study to solve this community problem.

Imagine that you are a researcher and are conducting a study to investigate a community problem. Using behavioral research principles, select a macro systems problem to investigate (there are many suggested in the textbook, e.g. domestic violence, homophobia, sexual abuse, delinquent gangs) and design a study to solve this community problem.
The purpose of your Final Paper is to solve this community problem.
The Final Paper should be eight- to- ten pages (excluding title and reference pages) that includes the following components:
(Please note that for the purposes of offering instruction, examples have been given below about a research study involving the use of financial reward programs to combat truancy. Please make sure that you create a study that does not investigate the same content.)
Introduction – This section should include a brief summary of the community problem that will be addressed, as well as the approach that will be used to investigate and solve the problem.
Statement of the problem – The purpose of this section is to specify the main research question (e.g., Does enrollment in a financial reward program reduce truancy?) and define the community problem in more depth (e.g., truancy), analyzing why it is a problem. In addition, you will explain the problem-solving method you plan to employ (e.g., enrollment in a financial reward program) and state your main hypothesis. (e.g., Enrollment in a financial reward program is expected to reduce student truancy in the short term, but its long-term effects are difficult to predict.)
Literature Review – In this section, research findings pertaining to both the community problem and problem solving method need to be illustrated. (e.g., Relevant articles may include those on the prevalence of truancy, the impact of truancy, previous methods used to combat truancy, and the benefits of financial reward programs.)
Methodology – Explain how your Final Paper will investigate the problem. How will the study be designed? How many participants will be involved in the study and how will they be recruited? (e.g., Four classes at a local high school will be given the opportunity to participate in the research study. Two of these classes will be enrolled in the financial reward program.) How will data be collected? (e.g., Truancy data will be collected on all of the participants for the six months preceding the reward program, for the duration of the program, and for the six months after completion of the reward program.) What statistics will be used to evaluate the data? (e.g., Inferential statistics will be conducted to compare the truancy levels of the group of students participating in the program with those of the group of students who are not participating in the program.)  Ethical considerations should be discussed to ensure that no unethical research is suggested.
Conclusions – This section should contain concluding remarks about any potential problems that might be encountered in conducting this research study. It should also include speculations on the potential results of the study.

WHAT MULTICULTURAL FACTORS SHOULD FUTURE STUDIES INCLUDE?

WHAT MULTICULTURAL FACTORS SHOULD FUTURE STUDIES INCLUDE?

PowerPoint Presentation
Utilizing the information you compiled for your literature review paper, and the feedback you received from your instructor about the literature review, prepare a 10-15 minute Power Point presentation on your topic, summarizing the key points and conclusions. Be sure to direct this presentation to an audience in the community. For example, if your paper pertained to a topic in developmental psychology, direct your presentation toward parents, or a parenting center. If your topic pertained to substance abuse, direct it toward a community service agency which may use this information for educating teens or parents about preventing drug use, or current clients about treatments and facilities available. Please state in your presentation the specific audience toward whom your presentation is aimed. Include a reference page in APA format, as well as speaker notes and an audio file with your presentation.
Your slides should provide answers to the following questions:

What was your topic?
What question did you hope to answer by completing this literature review paper? Explain the practical implications of the conclusions of the literature review and the audience to which they are directed.
Given the results of your literature review, what is/are the prevailing argument(s)? In other words, which of those is supported by the existing evidence? Be sure to include full coverage of the arguments, including strengths and weaknesses of each of them, supported by your findings from reviewing the relevant articles.
Did the researchers consider multicultural factors in their studies? If not, what factors may be involved? What multicultural factors should future studies include?
What ethical issues are related to your topic and/or discussed in the studies you reviewed?
How do the conclusions of your literature review relate to the various specialization areas in psychology? Tie them to as many as apply from the following areas: biological, cognitive, developmental, social, personality theory, psychopathology, and applied psychology.
How can the conclusions of your literature review inform the population towards whom your presentation is directed? How can they apply this information to their daily lives? What advice or ‘take home message’ can you provide to your audience based on the research you reviewed?
What research question could you ask in order to further develop this area of study?
Why is your research question important and relevant to the current work being done on your topic?

Your presentation should also follow these guidelines:

It should be approximately 10-15 minutes in length.
It should be clear, concise, and professional.  Writing should be free of spelling and grammatical errors; it should conform to current APA style (including any in-text citations).
It should include graphs, tables, figures, or images illustrating your ideas.
There should be a final slide listing references in current APA style.
The bulk of the text should be placed in the Notes pages of each slide. Keep the amount of text on the slide, itself, to a minimum.

2 Stages of Change
The stages of change can be visualized as a series with five parts (Prochaska & DiClemente, 1984). The change process occurs in the following stages:
 Precontemplation: During the precontemplation stage, substance-using persons are not considering change and do not intend to change behaviors in the near future. They may be partly or completely unaware that a problem exists, that they have to make change, and that they may need help. Most of the time, the substance-using person may not have experienced any negative consequences because of the behavior.
 Contemplation: As the substance-using person becomes aware that a problem exists, he or she may begin to feel the need to change. During this contemplation stage, the individual may still be using substances but is considering the possibility of stopping or cutting back in the near future. It is common for individuals to remain in this stage for extended periods of time because of ambivalent feelings of wanting to change and not wanting to change.
 Preparation: A shift into the preparation stage occurs when the substance-using person perceives that the advantages of change and negative consequences of substance use outweigh any positive features of continuing to use the substance. Preparation involves making choices about attending treatment and building a capability to change. Individuals in this stage may still be using substances, but they intend to stop using them soon. Goal setting and changes in friends and the environment often occur during the preparation stage.
 Action: Individuals in the action stage choose a strategy for change and begin the change process. At this stage, they are actively modifying their habits and the environment. They are making drastic lifestyle changes, such as deleting the phone numbers of dealers from their cell phones, removing drug paraphernalia from their homes, limiting the amount of isolated free time, attending 12-step support group meetings, and searching for treatment programs. Clients may experience issues of withdrawal during the action stage and struggle to grasp their own self- image without the substances. This stage can last for three to six months.
 Maintenance: Once abstinence has been established, it is important to make an effort to sustain the change and prevent relapse. This is an opportunity to learn how to identify and guard against triggers for relapse. Maintenance requires prolonged behavior change for a minimum of six months to several years.
It is important to note that the stages of change are cyclical in nature, and individuals typically move back and forth between stages and cycle through the stages at different times. In most cases, individuals who make attempts to maintain sobriety often experience relapse and then return to earlier stages in the change process. Reference: Prochaska, J. O., & DiClemente, C. C. (1984). The transtheoretical approach: Crossing traditional
boundaries of therapy. Homewood, IL: Dow Jones-Irwin.
