vulnerable population

vulnerable population

Provide peer response to the following discussion which requires  one reference from a peer-reviewed NURSING journal less than 5 y/o. Response has to be in APA format.
Discussion One:
According to de Chesnay and Anderson (2015), a vulnerable population is, generally speaking, a group of individuals who have an increased risk of developing physical, social, or psychological health problems (de Chesnay & Anderson, 2015, p. 3). This could be the case either due to genetic predispositions, life events, or any other circumstances that can influence a patient’s socioeconomic, physical, or psychological status.
De Chesnay and Anderson (2015) state that there are some major factors by which the vulnerable populations can be identified: ethnicity, immigration status, age, gender, and socioeconomic status, but there are many other factors that should be taken into consideration (de Chesnay & Anderson, 2015, p. 4). Based on these factors, high-risk population groups can be identified and assessed.
One of the vulnerable population groups are the elderly. As Oster and Oster (2015) mention cellular changes occur as part of the aging process, and therefore, the body fluids and bone mass decrease (Oster & Oster, 2015, p. 445). This puts the elderly at increased risk for injuries and prolongs or hinders the
healing process after injuries or surgical interventions.
Other changes that contribute to an increased risk for physical, psychological, or social health problems are age-related confusion and depression. Oftentimes elderly people live alone after the loss of a spouse. They might not leave the house at all due to their depression and therefore, show signs of from malnutrition, a lack of hygiene, or medication non-compliance. Many times the psychological changes go hand in hand with the physiological ones.

How recent theories, specially Robert Sternberg’s and Howard Gardner’s theories, have tried to solve some of these problems and limitations

3-5 PAGE PSYCHOLOGY ESSAY

The text should be handed in, printed and stapled, following a Microsoft Word format, a letter size twelve (12) and a spacing of one and a half (1.5) between sentences (or line spacing in the paragraph options). The extension of the work should not be less than three (3) pages or greater than five (5) pages of content…. The written essay should be a product that reflects your understanding and interpretation (substantiated with arguments, evidence and reasoning, expressed in a clear, consistent, and accurate matter) of the assigned readings( I WILL PROVIDE THEM) Do not use Internet sources and limit yourself to the assigned texts, the discussion in class and your own argumentative capabilities.

Instructions:

To understand the validity of an instrument we must critically assess the core concepts that supposedly are being defined, measured and applied in a psychometric test. Having that in mind we have, during the second unit, critically revised the concept of “Intelligence” since the beginnings of “mental tests”, in the late XIX century, until the more recent theories of Intelligence developed in late XX century (specially during the 1980s and 1990s). For that reason the purpose of the this test is to elaborate a single essay that discusses the following:

1.cdebate at the end of the XIX century and the beginning of the XX century.

2. The problems and limitations regarding how “Intelligence” has been measured, defined and applied. 3. How recent theories, specially Robert Sternberg’s and Howard Gardner’s theories, have tried to solve some of these problems and limitations. It is advisable that you take into account the following “guidelines” when elaborating your discussion:

1. Take into consideration the historical overview regarding the theory of evolution and individual differences as discussed in class and on Hergenhahn and Hanley’s (2014) text. It also advisable to look at Sternberg’s (2003) historical revision of some of the theories of Intelligence.

2. Focus on one of the recent theories, either Sternberg’s or Gardner’s, giving examples on how they prove that “Intelligence” cannot be reduced to what usual and traditional psychometric tests measure.

3. Use at least two (2) of the assigned texts. Limit yourself to said texts and the discussion in class. Assigned texts (in the order they were assigned). Hergenhahn, B.R. & Henley, T.B. (2014). Evolution and Individual Differences. In B.R. 1. Hergenhahn & Tracy B. Henley, An Introduction to the History of Psychology (279- 319). Belmont: Wadsworth. Sternberg, R. (2003). Intelligence. what are the three most important power sources for a nurse leader?

Nursing Leadership

Part 1

In your opinion, what are the three most important power sources for a nurse leader? Why?

The three most important power sources for nurses in my personal opinion are the following:

Expert power refers to such power that can influence others by using knowledge and skills. Experience knowledge and skills together make an expert power that is possessed by nurse leader and transferred to other nurses during practice of nursing. (The Sentinel Watch, 2010).  For a nurse leader to have the respect of those around him or her, I believe that first and foremost they must have the confidence that their leader knows what they are doing.  If the leader isn’t capable of doing the job, how can they be capable of supervising or evaluating my performance?

Coercive power refers to authority of a nurse leader i.e. nurse leader can impose penalties or punish other nurses by taking their privileges if they are not doing a good job. If nurses are not doing satisfactory job, nurse leader ensures that every nurse is doing a good job and ensuring patient’s satisfaction. The truth is that the underlying fear of retribution for poor performance comes into play at some point for most employees.

Reward power depends on the ability of the person who holds power to confer valued material rewards. The reward source of power depends on the ability of one person to grant another some type of reward for specific behaviors or changes in behavior. Nurses, in their daily provision of care, can use this source of power to influence client behavior as well as others employees.

So I think that these power sources are most important in nurse leader as these powers influence directly to nurses and help them to get educated punctual and skillful at the same time.

How are they best used in a leadership role? Describe

Power sources are best used in leadership role as these powers are true essence of the leadership. Nurse leader empowered by skills and expertise will be a good mentor and a working role-model for the junior staff nurses. Her/his authorities to keep a strict check on them give them a sense of responsibility. On one hand, reward for doing great job gives them a challenging, encouraging and motivating working environment; meanwhile, a threat to punish can bring best out of them.  A nurse leader makes best use of her power sources by supervising and managing the duties of nurses to satisfy patient’s demands. (Yapton, 1998)

What sources of power do you see most often displayed in your work environment? Why?

Part 2

You brought up a good point about coercive power. In health care coercive power is used to maintain standards. Many nurses think that this type of power is negative, but this is not always the case. Several times we must protect other staff and our patients from dangerous situations or incompetent care. The human resource roles are used to uphold many standards for employees, and coercive power is used to sustain them (Stapleton, 2017). The leader must be careful how they use this power, but using it is not a negative situation unless it is done in a ruthless and unfair way. It is a leadership skill to know how to use all the types of power they possess. Have you had a situation where another employee was suspended or fired after an incident? Do you think the use of coercive power was fair in this situation?

Week 2 Scenario

Leslie was 19 years old, working evening hours at a restaurant and living with her boyfriend, when she learned she was pregnant. As the pregnancy progressed, Leslie had difficulty managing the late hours at work and eventually quit. Thereafter, she became increasingly isolated and suffered from episodes of severe depression. She did not seek any prenatal care. Money was extremely tight, and the mainstay of her diet was inexpensive fast food. She occasionally drank alcohol to escape the stress of her situation.
Alexandra was born 3 weeks premature, weighing only 5 lbs., 6 oz., but otherwise, she appeared healthy. Leslie was nervous about caring for the baby and quickly found the demands of childcare overwhelming. Because she wanted her boyfriend to help with feeding, she chose not to breastfeed the baby.
The stress of their situation took a toll on the couple’s relationship, and they argued constantly. Leslie’s depression worsened, and she became increasingly withdrawn. She had little energy for Alexandra, who was often left in her crib for long periods during the day. Alexandra suffered from frequent ear infections and colds. She was fussy and slept poorly. Exhausted herself, Leslie often dozed with headphones on to drown out the baby’s cries.
When Alexandra was 2 months old, Leslie realized she needed help and moved back home with her parents. Her mother willingly helped care for Alexandra and established a close bond with her. The family settled into a stable routine, which greatly reduced Leslie’s stress level and provided Alexandra with consistent care and attention. At her parents’ urging, Leslie sought treatment for her depression. As her mood improved, she took on a more active interest in her daughter. She began taking Alexandra for regular check-ups to track her health and development.
At age 3, Alexandra was enrolled in a high-quality preschool program. She quickly adapted to this routine and enjoyed participating in many different activities. Although she often had problems paying attention and following directions, she was generally happy, friendly, and compliant. Leslie participated in parent-education activities at the school on topics such as child-rearing styles, effective discipline, age-appropriate play, and healthy nutrition.
Alexandra continued in the preschool program until she was 5 years old, at which point she made the transition to kindergarten. She lagged behind classmates in acquiring early literacy skills but did well in all other areas. She was especially fond of make-believe and storytelling activities.
