Why are so many children developing autism?

Psychology homework help

The number of children diagnosed with autism has risen dramatically during the past few decades. Researchers are now calling it an urgent health matter; some are calling it an epidemic. Between 1991 and 1999, the number of children in the United States receiving special education services for autism rose to 500%. The rate has nearly doubled in the past ten years across the United States. In 2002, the number of children in the United States with autism was 1 in every 150 children. At this point in time, approximately one in every eighty children has autism (Baio, 2012). This increase is not only happening in the United States. Studies have found rates to be rising in Canada (Ouellette-Kuntz, Coo, & Gorski, 2012) and in Europe (Baron-Cohen et al., 2009) also.

After completing the required readings for this week, post an initial response discussing the following three possible causes or reasons for this increase in prevalence:

  • Why are so many children developing autism?
  • Does research indicate that the rise is due to better methods for identifying and diagnosing children with autism, or is there some environmental, genetic, or cultural reason for the increase?
  • What should we do, as a society, to address this epidemic?

Address each of the questions and cite your sources properly.

Provide evaluations from the experts in the course of the presentation,      regarding contributions of psychological research on the chosen topic in      an applied context.

Assignment 1
For this discussion, you will create a presentation from the point of view of two specific professionals who are experts on the topic you selected in Week One for your Final Project.  For this discussion:

  • Consider the psychological      career alternatives available and determine from which fields of expertise      your two points of view will come.
  • Select the two professionals      you will use with expertise on the topic you selected.  Your      professionals’ identity may be based on a real person that you know, or      they may be made-up based on the job description of a professional in the      field.  The titles of your professionals should represent actual jobs      (based on job descriptions) from categories in two different areas of      mental health (e.g., psychiatry and psychology, social work and counseling).
  • In one or two sentences,      briefly introduce your experts by describing their current careers as well      as their backgrounds. The experts will be providing scholarly information      on your selected topic based on the point-of-view of their respective professions.
Provide evaluations from the experts in the course of the presentation,      regarding contributions of psychological research on the chosen topic in      an applied context.
  • Include information from at      least two peer-reviewed articles that were published within the last five      years to substantiate your experts’ claims.  You must select these      two articles on your own.  You may not use resources listed within      this course.  For information on how to generate search terms for specific      resources, visit the Ashford University Library.

To begin, create a presentation using the Sample Presentation Template, of at least five slides (not including the title and reference slides).  Provide the following elements in your presentation:

  • A side-by-side comparison of      your experts including their current careers as well as their backgrounds
  • A brief general explanation of      the topic chosen in Week One
  • Provide a slide for each of the      experts’ points of view including appropriate citations of your referenced      resources
  • A brief overview and comparison      of the two experts’ points of view
  • A separate reference slide must      be included at the end of the presentation
  • A minimum of three scholarly      sources published within the last five years must be included in the      discussion. References are cited according to APA guidelines.
  • A link to a website from an      organization associated with each expert’s profession.  Include      information from that website where the corresponding expert is presenting      her or his point of view. Include the websites in the reference slide      using the full APA citation format for websites. Do not just copy and paste      the URL to the website.
  • Use the sample template      provided to organize your presentation. You may change the font sizes in      the presentation. However, do not use a font smaller than 20 pt. You are      encouraged to insert relevant figures and graphics. Make sure to appropriately      cite any images you use that you did not create yourself. If you include a      table or figure from a journal article, cite it according to APA      guidelines.

Next, create a 3 to 5 minute oral video presentation of your presentation using a screencast program such as Jing or Screencast-O-Matic. You may also use YouTube or a voiceover PowerPoint saved as a video file with audio. The maximum time allowed for your presentation is 5 minutes, so practicing your presentation prior to recording it is highly recommended.

Jerome is a 28-year-old African American male who lives alone in an apartment

Jerome’s Case
Jerome is a 28-year-old African American male who lives alone in an apartment. He tells everyone he meets that he is a rapper and a male model. He has business cards for each vocation. He has never recorded a song nor held any modeling job. He has worked in a series of entry-level jobs to pay his bills. He usually gets fired for failing to show up to work. He claims he has modeling gigs or is recording when, in fact, he is not.
Much of Jerome’s spare time is spent at the gym and in nightclubs. He has had a series of failed relationships with women that typically end when they confront him about his supposed fame. He has a great deal of difficulty in considering their needs or interests and becomes upset or even abusive if he is not the focus of the conversation.
The closest Jerome got to a singing audition was when he traveled to a nearby city to audition for American Idol. He performed for the judges and was quickly told to stop. When confronted with negative feedback he screamed that they had no idea about music and that he was already a star. He became so unruly that security had to escort him out.
Jerome has had several arrests for fights in nightclubs. He tells the police on each occasion that the other guy started it because “he is jealous of my fame.” Jerome has never been in treatment nor taken any medications. When asked if he has any problems, Jerome reports, “Not me—just waiting for the world to bow down at my feet!”
Alice’s Case
Alice is a 52-year-old Caucasian who was brought to the emergency room by the police in a disheveled and disoriented state. Her clothing was dirty, and she smelled of alcohol. Currently, she is homeless and stays on the streets or in a shelter. When interviewed, Alice appeared guarded. She answered questions only minimally and her answers made little sense. She is concerned that the police “stole her baby.” The police officer who brought her in later provided a child’s baby doll that Alice says is her child. Alice takes the doll with her at all times and cares for it as if it were a real child. There is no evidence that Alice has ever been pregnant.
Alice has a long history of psychiatric hospitalizations and has been on psychotropic medications. When on medications, her thought and speech eventually become clearer. She does not like the medications—she says that they make her tired and gain weight. Alice has some sores on her feet that she has not taken care of, and they appear infected.

Developing Research Questions & Hypotheses

In-class activity: Developing Research Questions & Hypotheses
Directions: Please read the literature review below and then create a research question and hypothesis using the information provided.
Self-determination theory (SDT; Deci & Ryan,1985) posits that intrinsic versus extrinsic goal pursuits have positive effects on wellbeing (e.g., psychological health) and learning. SDT delineates three types of motivation: (a) intrinsic motivation—doing an activity for itself and the pleasure and satisfaction derived from participating; (b) extrinsic motivation— performing an activity as a means to an end, to satisfy an external demand, or reward contingency; and (c) amotivation—being neither intrinsically nor extrinsically motivated to perform an activity. The SDT framework was selected because it focuses on the interpersonal environment and the effects of that environment on autonomous and controlled motivation. Specifically, social contexts (e.g., home environment) are characterized in terms of the degree to which they are autonomy supportive or “authoritative” versus controlling or “authoritarian,” with research confirming that autonomy-supportive contexts enhance autonomous motivation whereas controlling contexts diminish autonomous motivation and enhance controlled motivation (e.g.,
Deci, Eghrari, Patrick, & Leone, 1994).
A family environment created by a particular parenting style may also influence one’s general sense of self-efficacy and motivation. Self-efficacy has been defined as the belief in one’s capabilities to organize and execute courses of action required to produce given attainments (Bandura, 1997). Self-efficacy has been shown to be influential in the actions and success of individuals in many different areas, including overcoming fears, success in the workplace, hard life transitions, and academic performance (Bandura, 1986; Chemers, Hu, & Garcia, 2001). Researchers have recently broadened their study of academic self-efficacy to include the study of college students. Pajares (1996) found academic self-efficacy to be strongly associated with academic performance in college students, with positive correlations ranging from = .49 to = .71. Chemers et al. have also found that academic self-efficacy is a significant predictor of academic performance and expectations. Additionally, researchers have found that as students’ academic expectations and self-efficacy increase, they are more likely to show higher academic performance (Chemers et al. 2001).
1. Identify your research question using the variables described.
2. Identify a hypothesis using the variables described.

Excerpt modified from Turner, E. A., Chandler, M., & Heffer, R. W. (2009). The influence of parenting styles, achievement motivation, and self-efficacy on academic performance in college students. Journal of College Student Development, 50(3), 337-346.

After completing the assigned readings, you should have a basic understanding of the characteristics and components of the U.S. health care delivery system.
Review the following assumptions regarding health care in the U.S (Greenwald, 2010). Although these assumptions are widely publicized, they might be disputed with critical thinking.
Evaluate additional literature and consider each of the following assumptions. Explain why you believe the statement is true or false.
· The U.S. Spends too much on health care services.
· The poor lack health care.
· The systems in other countries are better.
