Week 1 Activity 1: Research Activity: FDI and Ease of Doing Business 

You are working in a company that is considering investing in a foreign country. You were asked by management to evaluate the attractiveness of foreign countries in terms of return to FDI and ease of doing business. A colleague mentioned a potentially useful tool called the “FDI Confidence Index” and an index on Ease of Doing Business. Find the top 25 countries in terms of FDI attractiveness. Then pick one country and prepare a short report on the country’s FDI environment, regulations and ease of doing business. Your report should be a maximum of 1 page, double-spaced, Word or PDF document.  However, you can have unlimited number of exhibits that should be put in an Appendix in the same file.

The FDI statistics are provided by a variety of sources. One of the most comprehensive sources is the UNCTAD’s World Investment Report (see Country Fact Sheets) and can be accessed by searching the term “FDI” at http://globaledge.msu.edu or in the website of UNCTAD.

Alternatively, many of the same statistics, as well as detailed write-ups of the FDI environment can also be reached through the Country Commercial Guides (we will cover these later).

The Ease of Doing Business Index captures the regulatory environment of a country as it relates to the helpfulness of starting and operating a business. It is available from the World Bank at: http://www.doingbusiness.org/rankings/

• Reading selection of Swift’s A Modest Proposal. It is essential to recognize the genre of this work, as discussed in our class text, which you should consult and cite. Swift promotes a radical solution, but subtle options are mentioned. You are looking for surprise and a point of realization. For this reading selection:

1. Define the term “satire”.
2. How does Swift use satire to change the perception that the wealthy class has toward the poor?
3. Identify two alternatives that Swift offers to his “modest” proposal?

Voltaire

• Two (2) reading selections from Voltaire’s Candide. Consider how these readings start and end in terms of the action and the beliefs of the characters. Voltaire is critical of both religion and philosophy in his work Candide. Students should be able identify this criticism within the reading.These selections can be found on pp. 840-841 in the textbook. In addition, consult the class text at pp. 824-825.

For this reading selection:

1.  Identify two of the negative interactions Dr. Pangloss has with the religious beliefs of other characters.
2. What conclusion does Pangloss make about his entire ordeal since Lisbon at the end of the story?
3. Why might Voltaire be critical of his philosophical outlook?
4. Use at least two (2) good quality academic sources, with one (1) source being the class text. Note: Wikipedia and other similar Websites do not qualify as academic resources. You are highly encouraged to use the Resource Center tab at the top of your Blackboard page.
