Assignment 2: RA 1: Practitioner Process Project

An required assignment (RA) is a substantive assessment intended to measure student performance against selected course objectives and/or program outcomes within a course. RAs are completed by all students across all Argosy University campuses and delivery formats without exception. Each RA assignment contributes to a significant portion of the overall course grade and is assessed by faculty using the rubric designed for that assessment. These are individual assignments, and students earn individual grades. RAs are not intended to assess students on every topic covered in the course, just on the key course objectives and/or program outcomes.

For this assignment you will visualize a personally selected work scenario for which you will present a plan for leadership through change.

Your plan is based on a stage model and includes the key goals and objectives and the activities and tools you would use to achieve them. While you may assume that management understands and appreciates management concepts, be sure your notes are also instructive to help managers understand cultural, group, and individual psychological factors that might be important. If you are using materials from a resource, include a citation on your slide. At the end of the presentation, include a list of the cited references. Remember to proofread your presentation.

The following basic stages are given as a guide for one final check of your course project. Note: Remember, this project is all about planning. Ensure your plan addresses how these stages will be carried out in support of the change process.

A: Initiating, articulating, and doing strategic planning

• Articulate the basic need and motivation for the change.
• Develop a coalition within the organization to plan the basic strategy for the change.
• Articulate the vision to guide the strategic planning for the change.

B: Dissemination

• Translate the vision and plan to various stakeholder groups.
• Plan for and respond to resistance.

C: Action and evaluation

• Create opportunities for forward progress.
• Evaluate progress and provide feedback to make modifications as needed.

Make your final revisions to your presentation on the basis of the following criteria:

• Information is organized and comprehensive.
• Concepts are presented in a coherent and cohesive manner.

Your final deliverable should be a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation approximately 8–12 slides in length, utilizing a minimum of six scholarly sources. The presentation should have detailed speaker’s notes. All citations and references should be in APA format on both the slides and the speaker’s notes. A reference page, in APA format, should be included as a slide at the end of the presentation.

Design a program to increase volunteer participation in a community action program using the premise that if you can get one person to take action, others will follow.

Read the following scenario:

Woody’s Veneer Factory has contacted you because the board wants their organization to be evaluated to determine the reasons for loss of money, increases in garbage fees, and loss of production. The data given to you shows that veneer production is at its lowest point and the cost of recycled material disposal has nearly doubled in the past quarter.

On the day your team went to meet the factory superintendent, Max Barath, you saw one of the floor managers, Dave Flores, outside of Max’s office with a bag of ice over his eye. When the team inquired about the injury, Max stated, “It’s not a big deal. The quality control officer, Ken Howk, got upset with Dave and got in a little fight. Don’t worry about it. These two are old high school chums and this kind of thing happens now and then.”

Through several weeks of your assessment, your team has noticed troubling occurrences happening in the factory. The factory managers that are located on the top floor are very abrasive and condescending to the people on the floor. There is a definite ‘us versus them’ attitude. There is also a lack of communication. Most of the communication is done on a bulletin board out front.

Your team has also noticed that the floor workers are grinding up some of the good veneer. Management believes this is happening, so they are sneaking up in the cat walks to try to catch the floor workers in the act. But the floor workers have placed spies to watch out for the managers, particularly in the administrative areas next to the management offices. Whenever a manager comes out of the office, the administrative staff will call or text down to the floor to let the workers know so they can stop grinding up the good veneer. In addition, several employees on the floor are used as look outs and use hand signals to let everyone know what is going on.

You are tasked to give a full report to the investors who pay for this factory.

Your fast-food franchise has been cleared for business in all 4 countries (United Arab Emirates, Israel, Mexico, and China). You now have to start construction on your restaurants. The financing is coming from the United Arab Emirates, the materials are coming from Mexico and China, the engineering and technology are coming from Israel , and the labor will be hired locally within these countries by your management team from the United States. You invite all of the players to the headquarters in the United States for a big meeting to explain the project and get to know one another. The people seem to be staying with their own groups and not mingling.

• What is the cultural phenomenon at play here (what is it called/ term)?

The Scenario

You are a member of a school board for a medium-sized middle (junior high) school in a major western city. The city has experienced tremendous growth in the past 5 years, and as a result, the student body increased by 20 percent without much change in facilities and relatively limited increases in funding. The classrooms are overcrowded, much of the equipment is old, teachers have limited resources to enrich the curriculum, and the sense of direction is unclear. During the same time period, the school slowly developed one of the poorest records for student academic performance and drop-out rate.

Earlier to the past few years, however, the school held a well-established reputation as one of the most creative and academically sound schools in the city. Traditionally, parent involvement and interest in the school varied greatly. Similarly, the faculty is diverse in their approach, tenure, and backgrounds, but the majority demonstrate dedication to their students and are committed to the improvement of the school.

Because of a number of recent threats of lawsuits from parents over equal opportunity issues, several violent incidents among the students, and the poor academic performance, the principal was asked to resign. Many parents, teachers, and board members blame her for a laissez-faire attitude and what appears to be a total lack of direction and focus. Problems and complaints were simply not addressed and no plan articulated for dealing with the changes that the school was experiencing.

After a 2-month multistate regional search and interviews with a number of finalists, the school board narrowed its search for the new principal to two candidates.

Jerry Popovich is 40 years old. She holds M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in education administration with an undergraduate degree in computer science. She worked in the computer industry several years before teaching science and math. She worked as assistant principal in one other school and is currently the principal of an urban middle school on the West Coast. She successfully involved many business and community members in her current school. The board is impressed with her creativity and her ability to find novel approaches. She considers one of her major strengths to be the ability to involve many constituents in decision-making. She describes herself as a facilitator in the education process.
