During one week in April of each year, the US Department of Justice’s Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) sponsors the National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. You may notice a wave of antiviolence events, walks or runs for victims’ rights, candlelight ceremonies, empty shoe displays, and other memorial services occurring nationwide that particular week. The OVC uses such events to increase public awareness of victims’ rights and services. Human service providers often participate in these events, as many clients have been victims of violence and/or crime during their lifetimes. Often, that victimization caused the clients’ need for services; other times, the clients were victimized because of their other disabilities or vulnerabilities.

Victims may have experienced one or more of the following crimes: campus crime, child victimization, domestic violence, drunk driving, elder abuse, hate crime, homicide, human trafficking, identity theft, sexual violence, stalking, terrorism, or workplace violence (OVC, 2011).

For this assignment, select one of these crimes and search the Argosy University online library or other academic sources to locate at least one article describing research findings related to the crime and its victims. Design a poster you could use to further public awareness of the mental health effects of crime on its victims. Be sure to support your statements with citations of your source(s). Be sure to describe the psychological effects of that particular crime on its victims by including the following in your poster:

• At least one image, table, figure, or other form of graphic art
• At least three of the symptoms victims may experience
• At least two available victims’ services in your community, state, or at the national level for victims of that particular crime

In this assignment, you will consider the legality of contracts entered into by minors and whether a pledge or promise to make contribution to a charity is enforceable.

Next, let’s read a scenario.

The Adams family owned an old home in New Jersey that was in need of painting and some other repairs. Charlie Adams was a junior partner with a law firm and his wife, Jane Adams, worked part-time at the elementary school where their two younger children attended. One morning after dropping off the kids at school, Jane noticed painters at their house. She sent her husband a text asking if he had hired painters yet. When she learned that her husband had not hired the painters, she decided to turn around and go shopping before going back to the school.

Jason Adams (also known as Adams Jr.), the sixteen-year-old son, stayed home from school because he didn’t feel well. At 6-feet-tall and 220 pounds, Adams Jr. looks like he is in his early twenties. When the foreman rang the doorbell, he answered. The foreman said “We are here to paint your house today, is that ok?” Adams Jr. replied, “Sure, as long as I don’t have to help you.” The foreman asked him to sign some paperwork and he complied.

After the younger kids finished school for the day, the mother took them to the park and then they met Charlie for an early dinner. When the family arrived home, the painters were just finishing and the foreman asked, “So Mr. and Mrs. Munster, how does it look?” The Adams replied that they loved the color. However, the Munsters lived next door. The foreman demanded payment and reminded Adams that the gentleman inside the house gave both verbal and written approval.

Later that evening while her husband was working in his study, Jane was watching a show on the Animal Planet channel when she saw a commercial with a bunch of sad looking dogs in dirty cages. The organization urged anyone who wanted to help save the poor animals from all of the cruelty and neglect to call and make a contribution. Contributors would receive a picture of an animal they helped save along with a t-shirt. As tears welled up in her, eyes, Jane picked up the phone and pledged $5,000 to save the animals. The next morning, she regretted making the donation because she didn’t consult with her husband and he didn’t much care for dogs.

Based on the scenario, create a 2- to 3-page Microsoft Word document that includes the answers to the following questions:

• Was Adams Jr.’s signature on the paperwork considered a binding contract? Why or why not?
• Should the Adams be responsible for the bill? Why or why not?
• Would it make a difference if the Adams were on vacation in Florida? Why or why not?
• Will the charity be able to legally enforce the pledge made by Jane Adams? If so, why might the charity choose not to enforce a lawful pledge? If not, why not?

Focus of the Reflective Paper

The primary function of human resource management is to increase the effectiveness and contribution of employees in the attainment of organizational goals and objectives. Consider all the areas of HRM that have been discussed in class:

• EEO and Affirmative Action,
• Human resources planning, recruitment, and selection,
• Human resources development,
• Compensation and benefits,
• Safety and Health, and
• Employee and labor relations.

Submit a Reflective Paper in which you explain how these aspects work together to perform that primary function. Are any aspects more important than the others? Why or why not? How do you believe the HRM role can be optimized for shaping organizational and employee behavior?

The Reflective Paper must: (a) identify the main issues in the chosen area, (b) demonstrate new learning that has occurred, (c) include class activities or incidents that facilitated learning and understanding, (d) identify specific current and/or future applications and relevance to your workplace, and (e) reflect the potential impact to your future career plans or even in your personal life at home. The emphasis of the Reflective Paper should be on parts ‘d’ and ‘e,’ and on the application of new learning. Explore, in depth, the benefits of the new learning and understanding that has taken place.

The Reflective Paper:

• Must be eight double-spaced pages in length, excluding the cover page and reference page, and formatted according to APA style as outlined in your approved style guide.
