Critiquing Internet Sources

Today, the Internet provides an unprecedented amount of information by way of blogs, videos, and podcasts. Conduct a critique of one blog, one video, and one podcast, which provide information that addresses the topic of your Final Research Paper. Assess the authors’ use of bias, validity, and applicability of information. Examine the influence of web-based information on global citizenship and multicultural understanding. Then, compile a list of three factors you believe should be considered when evaluating Internet sources for use in researching information.

The paper must be three to four pages in length (excluding the title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style. In addition to the three multimedia sources you are analyzing, support your points with at least two scholarly sources. One of the scholarly sources must be from the Ashford Online Library. Cite your sources within the text of your paper and on the reference page.

You identified the people you need for the project team, talked with the various department heads, and shared the time and skill requirements. All the departments are able to provide people to the project at the levels needed. The person from Design who normally participates heavily in this type of project, however, is on leave for the first six months of the project. You and the department manager were able to agree on replacing the one full-time person with two part-time people. The first person will be able to work on the project approximately 15 – 20 hours per week and can cover the tasks that require more design expertise. The design department manager has instead offered the following people from whom you can choose to cover the remaining tasks:

• Russell Smith – design specialist. Russell is in the same role as the person leaving but for a different product line. Russell is new to the company; however, he has been involved in creating a similar product at a prior company but in a more junior role. Russell is available to the project approximately 15 hours per week.
• Katy Jones – marketing specialist. Katy has been with the company for many years and is very familiar with the specifications, design implications, and production risks of many of the existing product lines, including one very similar to the new product. Katy is normally in a more senior design role on projects, which is the role being filled by the other person. Katy is available to the project approximately 10 hours per week.

Go to the discussion board and post an email (about seven paragraphs long) to your manager describing your options, your recommended staffing decision, the possible risks or difficulties that may come from your choice, and how you will address those risks/difficulties. Describe how you will pull this person into the project team and get their buy-in on the project’s charter and their role on the project.

This Case Study is based on a work scenario. For this scenario, pretend that you are an HR representative and you are preparing a memorandum for the VP of HR.

The memo will analyze a set of facts that occurred in your company and conclude with an assessment as to whether your company is liable. This is a role-play assignment, and your objective is to develop a unique scenario and then play the role of the HR representative all the way through your memo, just as if you were the HR representative and this really happened!

For this memo, you may develop any scenario you desire, and the legal issue can be based upon any of the topics that you have reviewed during this course. However, the scenario must include that the supervisor of the employee(s) in question is advocating for the termination of one or more employees. You may or may not agree with the supervisor’s sentiment and will address this in your memo to your boss. You will break your memo into at least five paragraphs (make sure to assess whether termination will lead to any liability in paragraph four, and include in your recommendation paragraph five whether termination is warranted), as follows:

Paragraph 1: Identify the issue that you are dealing with; present the problem to your boss. Is it a concern about discriminatory treatment? Are the employees engaging in concerted activity? Is an employee being sexually harassed? You decide.

Paragraph 2: Outline the facts of the case. Tell the story. What did the employee(s) do that is of concern to you and prompted the drafting of this memo? In your scenario, advise your boss that you believe the employee (or ex-employee if the person has quit or has been fired) is preparing to sue the company.

 Paragraph 3: Identify the statute that is in question (is this a potential FMLA, FLSA, ADA, or some other issue?) and a legal case from the textbook that seems similar to your scenario. Look up the case on the Internet and read about it. Be sure you understand the important facts of the case and why (or why not) the court ruled in favor of the employee/employer. Analyze the case in this paragraph of your memo. Explain its relevance and how the facts are similar to the facts involving your scenario. You are not limited to discussing only one relevant case, but do not discuss more than two so that your memo is not too long.

 Paragraph 4: Determine whether or not the company has any legal liability or exposure based upon your comparison of the facts in your scenario with the facts and decision of the court case(s) you analyzed.

Paragraph 5: Give your boss a recommendation. Whether you think the company might be liable or not, you should have recommendations to your boss relative to how to deal with the situation (defuse it) and how to guard against future situations like this arising.

Lastly, make sure to include at the very end a “References” section. You should have at least three sources/citations for your memorandum. It is likely that one will be the textbook, one will be the court case you reference, and a third might be a statute, article, a second case, or some other relevant case.

The memo should not be longer than three-and-a-half double-spaced pages in length, excluding the references. Including the references, it should not exceed four pages. You will have to be concise in what you say! However, if it is shorter than one and a half single-spaced pages in length, excluding the references, you have likely not done a sufficient job analyzing the situation.

Applying an Ethical Theory

Please read these assignment instructions before writing your paper, and re-read them often during and after the writing process to make sure that you are fulfilling all of the instructions.

Overview
The following short essay assignment is designed to help prepare you for an important part of the Final Paper. In this essay, you will do the following:

• Choose either utilitarian or deontological ethical theory to apply it to an ethical question.
• Explain the core principles of that theory.
• Demonstrate how the principles of the theory support a certain position on that question.
• Articulate a relevant objection to the theory on the basis of that argument.

Instructions
Write a five paragraph essay that conforms to the requirements below. The paper must be 600 to 900 words in length (excluding title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. The paragraphs of your essay should conform to the following guidelines:

1. Introduction
   The introduction should be one paragraph, no more than 120 words. This should clearly delimit the ethical problem or question under consideration, and define the essential issues. The last sentence of the introduction should briefly summarize the conclusion or position on this issue that you think is best supported by this theory, and succinctly state what the objection will be. Remember that your essay will not be concerned with your own position on this issue, but what someone defending the chosen theory would conclude.
     
2. Body Paragraphs
   Each paragraph in the body should start with a topic sentence that clearly identifies the main idea of the paragraph. Each paragraph should have at least four sentences.
   1. Theory explanation:
      This should be approximately 150 to 200 words explaining the core principles or features of the deontological or utilitarian theory and the general account of moral behavior it provides.
      • You must quote from at least one required resource that defends or represents that theory. Please view this list of acceptable resources.
   2. Application:
      This should be approximately 150 to 200 words addressing how these principles or features of the deontological or utilitarian theory apply to the problem or question under consideration and identify the specific moral conclusion that results when these theories are applied to that problem or question.
      • Your application should clearly show how the conclusion follows from the main tenets of the theory as addressed in the previous paragraph. Please see the associated guidance for help in fulfilling this requirement.
   3. Objection:
      This should be approximately 150 to 200 words raising a relevant objection to the argument expressed in part “b”. A relevant objection is one that exposes a weakness in the theory as it applies to your problem, and so you should explain how it brings out this weakness.
      • Note that this does not necessarily mean that the objection succeeds, or that the conclusion the theory supports is wrong. It may be an obstacle that any adequate defense of the conclusion would have to overcome, and it may be the case that the theory has the resources to overcome that obstacle. Your task here is simply to raise the objection or present the “obstacle”.
          
3. Conclusion
   The conclusion should be one paragraph, no more than 150 words. The conclusion should very briefly summarize the main points of your essay and must contain a paraphrased restatement of your thesis.

Resources Requirements:

• You must use at least two resources to support your claims.
• At least one of the resources should directly represent the theory you have chosen. Please view this list of acceptable resources.
• The other source should pertain to the particular issue you are writing about, and should be drawn from the Required or Recommended Readings in the course or found in the Ashford University Library.
• You are encouraged to use additional resources, so long as at least two conform to the requirements above.
• The textbook does not count toward satisfying the resources requirement.
• To count toward satisfying the requirement, resources must be cited within the body of your paper and on the reference page and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
