Select as a case study any global economic event or events currently or recently covered in the news media and write a critical essay applying the concept points of economics.

The thesis or point of each student essay will be to evaluate alternative propositions for economic choice by one or more individuals, firms, organizations, or governments applying one or more of the economic theories provided in the course.

Students should use and cite at least four published sources to support their positions and analyses in addition to citing at least one discussion of economic theory in the Carbaugh textbook. At least two of the sources should be written by economists (they can be writing in news media or academic journals), and at least two of the sources should present arguments or perspectives that differ from or oppose each other. 

The paper should be well-written, formatted APA style, and 4-6 pages in length. 

After viewing the Chinese Imports & Food Safety Video, consider whether U.S. retailers that utilize products or raw ingredients that are imported from China and that are poorly regulated should be liable in tort for injuries to consumers who are harmed by those products. Answer parts 1 and 2 of the following question:

1. Answer part a or part b

  a. If U.S. companies should not be liable, then they could be legally exempt from tort liability. Discuss the consequences of such a policy to U.S. consumers.

  b. If the U.S. companies should be liable, then those companies would not be legally exempt from tort liability. Discuss the consequences of such a policy to U.S. businesses.
         

2. Regardless of your response to part 1 of this question, assume that U.S. retailers do have legal liability for defective products. What steps could U.S. retailers and manufacturers take, when using products imported from China that would minimize their liability exposure? For example, they could warn consumers about the potential, though speculative, dangers when using products comprised of poorly regulated ingredients or components. Given your strategy, what challenges would exist for U.S. businesses that implemented your strategy?

The Final Project is to be submitted as a PowerPoint presentation of approximately 20-25 slides. Material from the Unit 4 and Unit 5 Assignments can be used to provide a background and foundation upon which to build. While the primary focus of the Final Project should be on your firm’s global operations, integrate information on the regional and national level, as well. How have they done in the past? What is their current state? What kinds of plans and possibilities do they have for the future? Is there room for improving what they do? Should new ventures be added or old ones subtracted? As you can see, the field is wide open for you to construct your project in the most relevant way you see fit.

As parts of the Final Project you are to include an 18-24 month forecast and a strategic audit (an analysis of how well the firm’s strategies have worked to date). Your conclusion should include a clear set of recommendations that are well supported. The project must include APA format references on the final slide and in-text references on the slide where information is presented. Include a minimum of three high-quality, up-to-date sources. It is to be submitted to the Week 6 Dropbox by the end of Unit 6.
