1.The problems intended for use in this Discussion Board have been shared with you via Google Drive.  You should have received an email from your instructor that includes a link to the Excel document in your Google Drive listing the problems.  You can also access this Excel doc by clicking on “Drive” up on the top navigation bar of your gmail account.  Once you enter this document, select a data set from the list and claim it by entering your name next to it.  This is a shared document so the only change you should make is to add your name to the problem that you choose.

2.Include your data set in the Discussion topic or attach in a Word document. Explain what the data is. For example, is it a list of ages, incomes, sales figures, etc. 

 

3. Calculate the mean, median, mode, and midrange of the data. Show your work. If your data set contains too many data points to show the work explain in detail how you calculated the mean, median, mode and midrange.

4. Choose one of your classmates’ posts that have not been responded to by another student. Considering the type of data and the data set, what is the “best” measure of central tendency? For a discussion of the “best” measure of central tendency, see Section 13.4 pages 799 and 800 in your textbook. Is one of the measures of central tendency better than the others? Why or why not? Are all of the measures of central tendency equally representative of the data? Why or why not?

I completed number set # 10 (pets) from the document associated with this discussion board assignment.

The following is a set of pets per household.

1,3,6,6,5,4,2,0,2,1,2,2,4,2,0,1

To get the mean you have to add all numbers together and divide by the amount of numbers.

1+3+6+6+5+4+2+0+2+1+2+2+4+2+0+1 = 41 divided by 16 = 2.56

Mean is 2.56 pets per household.

The median of a set of numbers is the number in the exact number.

After placing your set in numerical order, you would find the median in the center of the set.

0,0,1,1,1,2,2,2,2,2,3,4,4,5,6,6

Median is 2 pets per household.

The mode of a set of numbers is the number that is repeated the most.

Mode is 2 pets per household.

To find the midrange of a set of numbers, you add the smallest and the largest numbers in the set together and then divide that by 2.

Midrange= 0+6= 6 divide that by 2 = 3

Midrange is 3 pets per household.

How many terms enrolled?

To calculate the mean, we need to add all the numbers together, and then divide by how many numbers there are.

 

6+4+5+3+3+5+15+10+7+6+9+4+3+18+4+4+6+9+12+2=135 / 20= 6.75

 

The mean is 6.75

 

The median is found by placing the numbers in order, and then taking the middle, if there a couple numbers in the middle, then you add them together, and divide by 2.

To find Mode- it is the number that appears the most in the set.  so we will see how many times a number is in the lineup.  

there are four 4’s three 3’s  three 6’s two 2’s, and two 9’s.  That is our mode.

 

The midrange is the value half way between the lowest and highest values in a set of data. It is found by adding the lowest and highest values and dividing the sum by 2.

so 18 is the highest and 2 is the lowest.  18/2=9  the midrange is 9
