1.) Using the sociological perspective of your choice (functionalism, conflict/feminist, interactionism), how might you explain the widening income inequality gap in the United States?

2.) Compare and contrast modernization theory and dependency theory. Which do you think is more useful for explaining global inequality? Explain, using examples.

3.) Which race/ethnicity group had the easiest time coming to the United States? Which group had the hardest time? Why? Which group has made the most socioeconomic gains? Why do you think that group has had more success than others? How might this help us to understand the perspectives of different racial/ethnic groups in the US?

White Ethnic Americans – German, Irish, Italian, and Eastern European immigrants

4.) Imagine what life would be like if you had been born as another gender (sex) or with a different sexual orientation. How would you have been raised differently? Would you have the same friends? What would your job prospects be like with the same skills and knowledge you have now? What other differences would you expect simply because of a change gender or sexual orientation? Why?

5.) Reflect on the following: A majority of residents of the United States are descendants of ethnic groups from around the world. Respond to the following: How does this affect American culture? How does prejudice and discrimination affect culture?

6. ) Reflect on your cultural heritage and traditions (caucasion), does your family practice symbolic ethnicity, fully maintain an ethnic identity, or have they fully assimilated into American culture?
