In this Discussion, you will examine concepts and ideas related to copyright, intellectual property, and ethical issues related to source materials in the eLearning ecosystem.

To prepare:

Read “Open Educational Resources: A Review of the Literature” and “Ethics of Educational Technology,” in this module’s learning resources, for a review of open educational resources and the challenges and opportunities they provide. Also, review contemporary ethics issues, like cultural competence, intellectual property, accessibility and universal design, critical theory in educational technology, system ethics, and social responsibility of professionals, in “Ethics of Educational Technology.” Finally, read the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) “Code of Professional Ethics,” and review the Creative Commons and the United States Copyright Office websites for the various applications of protection for intellectual property. Then, reflect on what you learned from your reading in this module.

Post the following by Day 3 of Week 11:

Explain whether you agree or disagree with the statement that “society’s interests are maximized when intellectual property is shared freely, with proper attribution, for noncommercial purposes” (Wiley, Bliss, & McEwen, 2014, p. 782). Then, analyze changes you predict in the areas of open source material and copyright in the near future. In your analysis, demonstrate how open source material can enhance eLearning design. Take a position and relate it to your own viewpoint as a professional in your industry.

Defend your response from personal experience, a learning theory, and at least one research study (PhD and EdS students)
