Notes: Term Paper
For the term paper, you will be expected to write a review paper (5-8 pages) either about a human disease with genetic origins or covering a recent advance in the field of genetics. Specific topics will be chosen in consultation with the instructor. The focus of the paper should be one of the following:
1) The genetic analyses that led to the discovery of the disease gene.
2) The use of genetics to further investigate/understand a disease gene after it was identified (especially those using genetics in other organisms as model systems).
3) Any area of genetics in which there have been recent major advances.

The paper should include a clear and well-organized review of the scientific literature on the topic (most important), plus any criticisms or insights you may have into the work reported in the papers you have chosen to review; and ideas for additional experiments in the area. The papers you discuss must be primary research papers (in other words, not a summary of others’ reviews!). Your paper should be written in standard scientific format, including citations and bibliography in the style required for all courses in the Biology Department. The paper must be your own work, in your own words, and you must give proper references for your sources in the text of the paper. Those who copy others’ work and attempt to pass it off as their own will be dealt with severely.
