Questions of the student answer posts:

Identify the three major sociological theoretical paradigms. For each, what are its core questions? Which one do you relate to best? How can you use this particular paradigm to explain your decision to attend college?

First post:

The three major sociological theoretical paradigms are:
1) structural Functionalism is known as a macro theory, because it looks on the larger scale of things. This takes a look at society and how it functions as a whole unit by related parts that all work together
a major core questions would be what holds society together?Robert Merton coined this theory.
2) Social- Conflict focueses on the inequalities of society, based on race, gender, ethnicity, and religion. a major core question is what separates people from one another in a society/?
3) Symbolic interactionisim is based on the way as society as small groups or individuals interact based on the different ways that people interrupt cultural ways either spoken, or written, or non-written cues.  A core question is what are the effects of non verbal cues taken wrong? George H. Mead introduced this in the 1920’s. People tend to attach meanings to symbols, such as a wedding ring it represents an everlasting bond between husband and wife, and their everlasting love.

–> I believe i relate to symbolic interactionism, i tend to attatch meanings to many symbols or signs. After my best friend passed away two years ago i was on my way home from work and saw a shooting star go across the sky as i was crying, that symbolized that he was looking down on me and that everything would be okay in the end. I decided to take a couple years off of school after my second term in community college, i did not feel that i was where i wanted to be, i can attach going back to school after my bestfriend passed away with this theory because, knowing he was unable to finish his degree made me want to fight harder for mine. Him being gone was a symbol of my strength no matter how broken i felt or defeated i knew that he would not want me to give up, so i decided to go back to school.

Second post:

The Conflict Paradigm:

The Conflict paradigm explains racism, sexism, ageism, socioeconomic inequality and more. There are many societies with different social differences that they might have.

Questions are:

How is wealth, power opportunities, and resources equally divided with society? How do groups or individuals maintain their wealth and power? Which Groups thrive in society? How? Why?

The structural functionalism paradigm:

This describes social stability and instability. This describes and determines the social balance of the society (in groups more than individuals). This explains the family, education, religion, law/politics/government, the economy, medicine, media that make up the society.

Questions are:

What are the components of society? How do they relate to each other? What keeps society in balance? What are the expected and unexpected consequences of an event?

The Symbolic Interactionist Paradigm:

For Symbolic Interactionism, everything in society is based on how we interpret our cultural symbols like media, images, language, stereotypes, perceptions, and belief systems. This is more focused on small groups that are around based the interpretations on society. This focuses mor on how we interact with other groups and individuals.  This more likely is focusing on individual reactions.
Questions are:

What influence do individuals have on the creation of a social structure? In what manner does social interaction impact human relationships? Do individuals alter their behavior depending on setting?

I think I can relate to the structural functionalism paradigm more because being stable or unstable can mean a lot in this world. Education also means a lot in many careers and many situations. I believe that to be stable or anyone in this world first comes education. I believe that this is a strong example of structural functionalism. To be able to continue or start a good career education should come first to be well educated in the future career.

how do sociologists use theoretical paradigms to frame their thinking?
