The three dominant ethical theories in Western philosophy are:

Utilitarianism, Utilitarianism argues that, given a set of choices, the act we should choose is that which produces the best results for the greatest number affected by that choice. (Mosser, 2013, ch 1.6, para 2)

Deontology, Deontology focuses on what we are obligated to do as rational moral agents. (Mosser, 2013, ch 1.6 para 11). Not sure if I’m counting the paragraphs correctly I apologize if I am not.

Virtue Ethics, Virtue ethics seek to determine not what makes an act good but what makes a person virtuous. The judging of one’s character. (Mosser, 2013, ch 1.6, para 21).

The only thing that I can think of recently that presented an ethical dilemma is my desire of staying in this school or not. I am so confused and irritated with the way this is going. I have done really well much better than I thought that I would do having acquired nothing less than an A. However since I started going to Ashford University somewhere along the lines of about nine months ago not one single class that I have taken even remotely has anything to do with Accounting in which I am trying to obtain my degree. It is to the point now where I have almost lost all drive to do anything for classes. Every class I take seems to be further and further from what I am trying to achieve. I have written essays about my personal life, about things I have never heard of or will again, about things that could not possibly help me in my career for example how is me understanding what it means to be a suicide terrorist and the culture of that terrorist going to help me in any way shape or form in accounting? I just feel like giving up, I was so exalted to be going to school and achieving something and now I am wondering what it is exactly I am going for because like I stated none of this has any bearing on accounting that I can see. As far as ethics go, well now that I am not on drugs doing the right thing is equivalent to breathing. Nobody tells you to breathe you just do it, that is how I see ethical situations you do what is right because it is the right thing to do from our societies outlook. Sorry for ranting I’m just really on the verge of giving up here.
