Being that I am in the military, I am constantly monitored, both on and off duty. However this is more so to make sure I am not smearing the name of the military. For example I had a personal problem between myself and another individual last year where he said some choice things about my family. I found I was being monitored after receiving a message from my supervisor telling me to drop it because it was not going in the best direction. The next day I ask him why he had been following me on my social network, and he disclosed to me that he does it periodically to make sure his troops don’t “do something stupid to make him look bad.” In this instance I believe the instance was rather minor in that he peeked no further than to make sure I didn’t mess up either of our reputations.
While I was a little concerned with having been watched and confronted by my supervisor on social media, I understood the importance of the event as far as how he saw it, and that it was necessary diffuse the situation before it got out of hand, I told him this and basically asked that he just ask me about my life rather than go skulking through my social media next time. We had recently had some members of our work force getting called out on social media for being far to aggressive with individuals, making threats, and being disrespectful.. This caused my supervisor to begin looking into all of us, in an attempt to keep the same thing from happening to us. Another issue might have been the negative words said about the military by members being found on social media and this caused an uproar that quickly found an end. This probably caused some problems because no company, or work force likes to be ill-spoken of, especially by its own employees. (Mosser 2013 Pg. 4 Para. 26)
The golden rule for Kants Universaliztion Test, talks about if a certain policy could be imposed on one companies employees could be imposed on another company. (Mosser 2013 Pg 4-1 Pra. 7) In other words could this same principle of prevention by monitoring work out elsewhere. I find that this kind of process would work out best if it was discussed with the employees prior to its enactment. However most companies won’t and therefore must respect the societies rules as far as privacy goes, meaning that every individual is entitled to their own privacy whether it be on social media or in person. This is due to deontologies point proven that all people, in this case corporations, must treat rules as the individuals do. (Mosser 2013 Pg. 4-1 Para.9)
