Purpose: The purpose of this essay is to examine popular culture through an ethical lens. As explained in Writing Arguments, “[w]hen we are faced with an ethical issue, we must move from arguments of good or bad,” which were the basis of the evaluation essay, “to arguments of right or wrong” (293). Thus, for this essay, you will examine the ethical or moral implications of a pop culture issue of your choice, arguing that pop culture’s portrayal of a certain issue is either ethical (right) or unethical (wrong). In order to do so, you might make a consequences-based argument, focusing on possible real-world consequences. Or, you might make a principles-based argument, arguing that the portrayal is right (or wrong) because it follows (or violates) certain ethical or moral principles. As part of your argument, you will need to incorporate at least one pop culture “text” as an example of how your chosen issue is portrayed.
