Objective Print This Page

Research shows that people learn effectively when working on real problems grounded in their own work experience. To this end, our course project is designed to incorporate students’ work experience into the learning process in this course.

The project is an opportunity to explore, in-depth, a topic related to the course objectives (TCOs) that is of significance to you or your organization (current or former).

Summary Print This Page

Members of the class are required to prepare an applied research paper, with a minimum of 10 pages but not to exceed 12 pages in length (excluding cover page and appendices), on a specific issue related to leadership or organizational behavior.

Guidelines Print This Page

Topic Selection

  1. Select a specific organization of interest to you and identify a problem at the firm related to organizational behavior (OB).
  2. Think of yourself as an organizational consultant and assume that a key manager has requested a thorough analysis and recommended course of action to resolve an actual organizational problem that will make a difference to the future performance of the organization.
  3. Identify which of our TCOs or specific topics in the syllabus are related to the problem you identify.

Research Sources

  1. All papers must have a minimum of six scholarly sources cited within the text of the paper and identified in the references section.
  2. Additional research sources can be attached in a bibliography.
  3. Review the following document for instructions on how to access and use EBSCOhost for your research: EBSCOhost.

Paper Format

  1. All papers should be single sided, double-spaced, using a 11- or 12-point font.
  2. Length of the paper to be between 10 and 12 pages, not counting cover page and appendices.
  3. The first page should include the title of the work, student name, address, telephone and e-mail address, course number, date, and instructor name.
  4. Follow APA style for general format and citations.
  5. Paper sections must adhere to the guidelines below and each section must be labeled in the text.
  6. Language should be clear, concise, and precise.
  7. Tone should be professional, consistent, and not filled with jargon.
  8. Grammar and syntax (sentence structure) must be correct.
  9. Report must be free of misspellings and typos.

Tables and Figures

  1. All figures and tables must be referred to in your text before they appear on the page.
    1. Figures and tables should appear on the same page as or the page after the text that refers to them.
  2. All figures and tables need captions. Captions go below figures and above tables.

Quotations and Citations

  1. Quotations and citations are crucial components of a research paper and must be present.
  2. Failure to properly cite research sources and borrowed ideas is plagiarism.
  3. Refer to APA style guide for assistance with properly citing quoted and/or borrowed materials and ideas.

Project Outline Print This Page

Please print out the Course Project Outline available in Doc Sharing and use it as a checklist while constructing your paper and again before you turn it in.

Your paper must include the following sections:

SECTION

POINTS

DESCRIPTION

Title Page

5

Title of your applied research paper, e-mail address, course number and title, instructor, and date.
Introduction

10

Provide an overview of the organization and your role in it. Give enough information about the firm to acquaint an unfamiliar person (no matter how famous the company). Identify name, location, size, market segment (business line), and a brief history. Identify the essential issues, events, or actions to help frame the problem and subsequent discussion points.
Problem Statement

15

Identify and clearly state the problem (the leadership or organizational behavior issue that you have selected to research).

The problem statement should be phrased in terms of a researchable question. For example, if a work group is not performing effectively, an effective problem statement might be “How can group performance be improved?”

A well-formed problem statement has:

  1. Focus – the problem should be well defined and specific enough for the reader to gain a clear idea of the OB topic area and the direction of your study and research.
  2. Structure – if the problem statement is sufficiently focused, it will provide a basis for decisions about which information to include and which to exclude from the paper.
Literature Review

40

You must address at least six scholarly resources in this section. Approach this section as a mini “book report” on each of the reference sources that significantly informed your analysis and proposed solutions. Give the reader an encapsulated review of what information you found most relevant to your research. You may have found conflicting opinions/theories related to your topic area. Identify and discuss any such contrasts and/or describe in detail significant agreement among your sources. Your literature review should be separate and distinct from your analysis section; it is a summation of your research.
Analysis

40

Explore the problem in depth and with scholarly rigor.

Provide an identification and description of the root causes of the problem/issue. Be sure not to address only symptoms of your problem. Diagnose the problem and its origins.

A critical element of this section is to apply leadership and organization concepts and models from our text, from class discussions, and from your literature review. Discuss the concepts, ideas, or insights that are most valuable in helping you make sense of the causes of the problem. Support your analysis with reference to appropriate research material.

Solutions

30

Identify at least three potential workable solutions to your problem and identify the pros and cons of each alternative solution and its high-level implementation steps.

Identify your preferred solution and describe exactly what should be done and how it should be done, including by whom, with whom, and in what sequence. Always explain your thinking behind your final solution set. It’s important to be clear about why a particular alternative (solution) was chosen, as opposed to others.

Reflection

10

Think about this assignment and write a well-thought-out reflective statement about how this assignment influenced your personal, academic, and professional leadership and managerial development.
References

10

You must use no fewer than six library resources outside your textbook.

All references must be cited in two places: within the body of your paper and on a separate reference list. Choose references judiciously and cite them accurately. Cite all sources using APA format.

Please note: Citing an author’s work within your text documents your research, identifies the source for readers, and enables readers to locate the source of information in the alphabetical reference list at the end of the paper. To use the ideas or words of another person without crediting the source is plagiarism. Plagiarism in its purest form involves copying passages either verbatim or nearly verbatim, with no direct acknowledgment of the source. The most common form of plagiarism is to paraphrase information from your source material. Paraphrasing does not relieve you of the obligation to provide proper identification of source data. The best way to avoid plagiarism is to make sure all quotes, ideas, or conclusions not your own are given proper acknowledgment in your text.

In today’s fast-paced academic environment, students often find themselves juggling multiple responsibilities, from attending classes and working part-time jobs to participating in extracurricular activities. One such solution is the use of Nursingpapertutors.com academic writing website. Their familiarity with diverse subjects ensures that students can receive assistance across a wide spectrum of disciplines, from mathematics to literature, and from nursing to engineering.

First Draft of a Commentary Assignment

For this assignment, write a 750-1,000-word commentary that addresses a topic of ADHD.

On page 287 of the textbook, Trimbur wrote, “Commentary is a genre of writing that uses analysis and interpretation to find patterns of meaning in events, trends, and ideas. The purpose of commentary is not simply to report on things but to give readers a way to make sense of them.”

To help you get ideas for this assignment, consider what has motivated the writers in this chapter to write commentary.

Part 1: Label or Identify the Subject: Provide the name for the subject or create a name for the phenomenon and situate the subject by providing needed context or background.

Part 2: Explain the Subject: Seek to find patterns of meaning in events, trends, and ideas (e.g., speculate as to causes and effects of an event, compare with a similar case, example).

Make a Judgment/Offer an Opinion: Evaluate the merit/efficacy of the subject; offer praise or critique a given situation.

Trends: Labeling trends gives readers a handle on what is taking place around them. Trends rely on the interpretive powers of commentators to name what is happening, thereby giving a series of events a distinct identity. The idea of “branding” in Eric Liu’s commentary is a good example of how identifying and labeling trends can bring an issue into focus. There are plenty of other trends as well— body piercing, tattooing, nostalgia for the 1980s, the growth of micro-breweries, and corporate downsizing are just a few. You might write about the significance of a particular trend that is already well known, or you can invent a new label to characterize a trend that has not been noticed before.

Policy issues: Commentators often address issues of public policy. For example, Lundy Braun’s commentary, “How to Fight the New Epidemics,” analyzes the causes of infectious disease and the adequacy of the “germ theory” to control disease. You might write a commentary that focuses on the causes of an issue that interests you and the implications for public policy. Accounting for why things happen is often the first step in explaining what should be done—to endorse, alter, or control the situation.

Current events: Stories that break in the news seem to call for a swift response by commentators to shape the public’s mood and its sense of issues. You might draw on a recent event to serve as the springboard for your commentary, something current that your readers are likely to know about but where the meaning is still up for grabs.

Rereading historical events: You could comment on a historical event, as Mike Rose does when he rereads the notorious encounter between Frederick Winslow Taylor and the workman Schmidt to find new meanings. Commentators often analyze past events and point out implications that would otherwise go unnoticed. You could write a commentary about the significance of a historic event, an invention, a social movement, or an everyday occurrence.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the GCU Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

Augment your understanding and perspective on these facts and elements by consulting at least five scholarly sources outside of class texts. Use the GCU library for sources. Include this research in the paper in an appropriate scholarly manner.

The final draft of this assignment uses a grading rubric. Instructors will be using the rubric to grade the assignment; therefore, students should review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the assignment criteria and expectations for successful completion of the assignment.

You will receive completion points for the first draft based upon the successful submission of your draft.  The points are not an evaluative statement about your draft; be sure to consider all instructor comments as you revise your draft.

You are required to submit this assignment to Turnitin. Refer to the directions in the Student Success Center. Only Word documents can be submitted to Turnitin.

In addition to submitting your first draft to your instructor, also post this draft as an attachment in the Week 6 Peer Review forum in your LoudCloud (LC) classroom by Day 3 of Week 6.

  Deliverable Length: 1,000–1,200 words

Due Date: 1/27/2014 5:00 PM  CT

You will be writing an essay of 1,000 words or more about two poems from the assigned reading list. Please select two works from the list of fourteen and answer the questions below. Again, be sure to begin your paper with an engaging introduction and clear thesis statement, develop each point in the body of your paper using examples and quotes from the poems, and conclude your paper with a restatement of your thesis and closing remarks. Also, make sure you maintain your credibility by including in-text citations and a reference list correctly formatted in APA style.

Imagery: What visual images can you identify in both poems? Comment on the details you notice about objects, places, people, colors, textures and so forth. Which of your other senses are stimulated by the poets’ descriptions?

Figures of Speech: List the specific metaphors, similes, puns and other figures of speech each poet uses and how they contribute to the poem’s overall meaning. (Remember, figurative language is not literal but rather suggestive of something else. For example, the metaphor, “Jack is a pig,” is not a reference to an actual animal with hooves but rather someone named Jack who has pig-like qualities or mannerisms.)

Symbolism: Identify the symbols you notice in each poem. What abstract concepts (e.g., love, death, truth) might the concrete objects (e.g., persons, places, things) suggest?

Language and Word Choice: Every word in a poem has been included (or left out) after much deliberation, as poets choose their words very carefully. Remark on the following in each poem: Does the poet use informal or formal language? Does he or she write in an older dialect or contemporary English? Provide examples.

Tone: What tone does each poet take (e.g., sad, humorous, sarcastic, loving, etc.) toward his or her subject matter?

Themes: What are the main messages of both poems? Give reasons for your answers.

Sound: Read both poems aloud. What do you notice about their rhythms, rhyme schemes and musicality? How does listening to the sound of a poem differ from merely reading it as words on a page?

Final Thoughts: Poetry can enlighten and/or evoke deep emotion in readers. Express the impact each of the two poems you have analyzed for this assignment had on you. What insights did you gain about life or human nature, and what feelings did each piece stir in you? Has your view of poetry changed in any way since reading and analyzing the Phase 3 poems? Explain your answer
