Review the article “8 ways electronic work instructions are transforming the shop floor” from this week’s reading assignment. This article discusses the importance of work instructions and how these instructions have improved a company that runs a shop floor environment. Assume that you are a manager for the company in this article. Considering the methods that have been used in the past and that are currently being used as mentioned in the article, explain what you feel the pros and cons are to electronic work instructions. Using outside research, what other work instructions might you introduce to the work place? You should include a minimum of two additional techniques not mentioned in this article. Use your course materials and outside research to generate a solid analysis on why these methods would be helpful. Your analysis should be supported by research. Article is attached.

One objective of this course is learning how to correctly interpret statistical measures. This includes learning how to identify intentionally misleading statistics. For this week’s activity, create your own example of a misleading statistic. Explain the context of the data, the source of the data, the sampling method that you used (or would use) to collect the data, and the (misleading) conclusions that would be drawn from your example. Be specific in explaining how the statistic is misleading.

 

Use a minimum of 2 sources. APA format is required including proper in text citations and a list of references. NOTE: Sources used in answering the Topic Question should come from peer-reviewed journals. This means no tweets, blogs, wikis, CNN.com, etc. should be used as resources.

Our chain of pharmacies is considering implementing a self-service checkout system, called SelfCheck in order to reduce the staff required to man the cash registers.  With the resources freed up by the automated checkouts, our goal is to add more pharmacy technicians to improve satisfaction with the prescription-filling process.  All the ways that the SelfCheck system can be used are described below.

 

SelfCheck allows a customer to scan an item.  The customer initiates this action by running the barcode of the item over the barcode reader.  The system records what item was purchased, for what amount, etc.

 

Our pharmacies have a customer loyalty program that uses the little keychain cards like many grocery stores.  SelfCheck is built to handle this and a customer may scan their membership card to tell the system to invoke membership benefits and discounts.  They will receive the same membership benefits as checking out as they would at a regular register.

 

Of course, the customers will need to pay for the items they have purchased.  They tell the system when they are done scanning and need to pay.  They indicate the payment method and provide cash, check, or credit card as appropriate.

 

We pride ourselves on responsive service.  One of the things we like about SelfCheck is that it allows the customer to request help at any time during the checkout process.  The customer presses a help button and the clerk will receive a notification that the customer needs help.

 

One of the features that our management requires is the system produces a statistical report.  SelfCheck automatically generates the statistical report on a weekly schedule and sends the report to the pharmacy manager by e-mail.  These reports will help our management determine the adoption rate of SelfCheck and determine if the project will be considered successful.

Case Study #1 Jennifer is a 29-year-old administrative assistant married to Antonio, an Italian engineer, whom Jennifer met four years earlier while on a business trip for her marketing company. The couple now lives in Nebraska, where Antonio works for the county’s transportation department and Jennifer commutes an hour each way to her marketing office. They have been trying to start a family for over a year. Eight months ago, Jennifer miscarried in her second month of pregnancy. Antonio’s parents love Jennifer and often ask her if she is expecting again, hoping to encourage her to focus on her next baby. Jennifer’s mother passed away two years ago and her father’s health is rapidly deteriorating. Jennifer faces the probability of placing her father in a skilled nursing care facility within the next few months, against his wishes. At work, Jennifer runs a tight ship. She is organized and prepares lists to assure that everything is done according to schedule. Everyone counts on Jennifer and she takes pride in never letting people down. Jennifer has visited her physician numerous times in the last six months, complaining of headaches, backaches, and indigestion. Jennifer insists that she is happy and is not feeling stressed, yet she finds herself making more mistakes at work, unable to keep up with housework, and feeling tired and overwhelmed; she has begun to question her effectiveness as an employee, wife, daughter, and potential mother. Her pains seem to be increasing, but her doctor cannot find a physical cause for her discomfort. Case Study #2 Michael is a 40-year-old airline pilot who has recently begun to experience chest pains. The chest pains began when Michael signed his final divorce papers, ending his 15-year marriage. He fought for joint custody of his two children, ages 12 and 10, but although he wants to be with them more frequently, he only sees them every two weeks. This schedule is, in great part, a result of his employer’s announcement that budget constraints would result in layoffs. Michael worries that without his job he will be unable to support his children and lose the new townhouse that he purchased.
