The spirit of service and compassion that once motivated nurses has evolved into a professionalism that demands power status and appropriate compensation (Shelly & Miller 2006 p. 16). This topic is the most interesting to me due to the fact that over the six short years I have been a nurse I have seen the population of nursing change. I have been involved in a peer interview group on my unit for the past five years and have recently moved into a management position wear I actually hire employees. I remember in the beginning of my experiences of interviewing new nurses most had a story behind the interview question Why did you become a nurse? I remember one new graduate nurse explaining that her mother and grandmother were both nurses and she aspired to be like them caring respected smart and making a difference with their work. Another nurse explained that her husband had died of alcoholism and she watched as his nurses judged him and did not treat him with respect. It was her goal to do better as a nurse and provide her patients with respect and the care they deserved no matter what their background. Most recently I have seen a change in the reasons why nurses are choosing the profession. The last interviewee discussed how the hours were great; 3 12s and it works out great for her family life. I have noticed an increase in the theme of the convenience nursing allows for people and less of the compassion or calling.The analysis of disease and healing presents interesting insight into the role of healthcare providers and spirituality. They stand beside us but they have not voluntarily shared our fate (Meilaender 2013 p. 9). The text describes the contradictory relationship between God working through doctors to treat disease and treating the disease may enable a false hope of invulnerability therefore creating the inability to comprehend suffering. I understand the reading to mean that there must be a balance between God (Health) and healthcare (health). I agree with this inference for the fact that I believe that ones mind or relationship with God must be as strong as the belief in the doctors to provide relief. If ones mind is not in the right place the therapies will not assist in healing. Spirituality enables the direct experience of connection between the individual and God and can exist with or without an intermediary such as a religious institution (Grossman 2013 p. 1150).Grossman T. Chapter 15: Weight and Appearance 469
U.S. participants, both men and women who were taller than average had higher earnings, but men received greater returns on height than women did.34 Other samples have produced similar results.35 In a comprehensive longitudinal U.S. study with 8,590 people, Timothy Judge and Daniel Cable found that height was significantly related to earnings for both men and women and that advantages for tall people were stable over the course of their careers.36 International Feature 15.1 discusses a British study on the effects of beauty and height on labor market outcomes.
I Legislation Relevant to Weight and Appearance

Is it illegal to prefer those who are tall, thin, or attractive over others? In general, it is not, unless doing so also disadvantages people with other protected attributes (such as race, sex, age, disability, or religion). In one study with a representative sample of U.S. adults, researchers found that more of the 2,300 adults surveyed reported weight or height discrimination than those who reported race and sex discrimination.37 In this section, legislation and some cases related to weight are discussed, followed by appearance legislation and related cases.

The ADA and Weight
Presently in the United States, no federal legislation prohibits discrimination based on weight alone; however, in certain cases, such discrimination may be illegal under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). As previous chapters have pointed out, under the ADA, people who actually have or who are perceived to have a disability (regardless of whether this perception is accurate) are protected from employment discrimination.38 Therefore, if an employer assumes that an applicant’s weight will impede his or her ability to perform a job and makes a negative employment decision on the basis of this perception, the applicant could have a claim under the ADA.

Introduction:
The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree was created in 2004, and because of the newness of the degree, some confusion and disagreement exists as to the roles DNP prepared nurses fulfill. There is also a lack of understanding about the impact they can make in patient and population health, clinical outcomes, and the healthcare system. This week Dreher and Smith-Glasgow (2017) discuss the role strains/stress DNP prepared nurses are feeling in their current practice. Some DNP prepared nurses express being frustrated and concerned about how some work environments do not accept the DNP prepared nurse in advance role settings as being different from the Master of Nursing (MSN) prepared nurse (Dreher & Smith-Glasgow, 2017).
As DNP students, you may need to educate other healthcare providers/systems on the roles DNP prepared nurses play, and the purpose of practice projects, to find mentors and earn buy in for evidence-based projects, particularly because DNP projects are not primary research projects. Moving forward there will be a great need for reflection, which can enhance practice, as reflection identifies experiences, skills, and knowledge in practice. Reflection expands existing knowledge, which may also lead to conceptual changes that narrow the theory-practice gap, by identifying what was learned by practice experiences, and figuring out what learned information can be applied in future practice. As time moves forward, DNP prepared nurses will trail blaze a defined path that significantly contributes to nursing practice, research, and education.
