Module 3 Discussion Assignment
Details Chapter 3
Read the following New York Times article before responding to discussion questions:
Cave, D. (2009). Women at arms: A combat role, and anguish too. The New York Times. Online at: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/01/us/01trauma.html (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.
Article Summary: PTSD and Women Soldiers
The focus on PTSD and American combat veterans has been primarily on men. That is because, technically at least, women had never served in combat. But current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan give new meaning to the term “combat.” No longer are soldiers just marching in battalions or serving on ship. They are walking or driving down city streets (in Iraq) or patrolling mountain ranges and caves, or driving down forsaken mountainous dirt roads, waiting for the next improvised explosive device to detonate underneath them or a rocket-propelled grenade to assault them from above. No, you don’t have to be labeled as being in “combat” to face horrific dangers in these wars.
Women are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan suffering from PTSD as severe as their male counterparts. But we don’t hear about it much in the news (though, the Veteran’s Administration does recognize it and treat the women, of course). That is, until The New York Times ran a special story on women war veterans and PTSD, part of a series of stories about women at war. The article concludes that women cope with PTSD differently, in part because their families, friends, and the public don’t expect women to have been in “combat” or subjected to conditions that could produce PTSD. Another factor is that when individuals with PTSD are women, people will likely have little patience with them if they burst out in anger or punch a hole in a wall or otherwise act out with aggression, as some men with PTSD do. Gender roles are different for men and women warriors. In addition, while deployed, women don’t have many other women for emotional support–they are outnumbered by men. Men and women share the same types of feelings but express them differently. Often what a woman in distress needs is another woman who shares her communication style. Sadly, studies have found that women veterans seeking compensation for PTSD as a war-related injury are held to a much higher standard than men. “You weren’t in combat,” “You didn’t kill anyone,” are some of the excuses that women veterans have heard from the military and the Veteran’s Administration. As the story reports, at least 3,000 women with diagnosed PTSD have been refused compensation by the VA.

What effect might misdiagnosis’s have on children lives?

What effect might misdiagnosis’s have on children lives?
Without any test for mental health disorders, the gateway to a missed diagnosis is left to perception when the underlining problem isn’t found (CCHR, 2007). When it comes to the effects of misdiagnoses, children with mental health issues such as bipolar disorder, manic depression, and schizophrenia disorders can have devastating consequences on their life.  When a child is miss diagnosed, he or she will probably be prescribed certain medications that may not solve or help the issues.  In addition to being wrongfully medicated, experts can also refer the child to therapies that he or she may not need, which can make matters worse.  Therefore, misdiagnoses can be like placing the wrong permanent labels on children that may bare devastating lifelong consequences.
Why should or should not we diagnose young children?
According to the American Psychology Association (n.d.) there are approximately 15 million children and adolescents in our nation currently diagnosed with a mental disorder.  Wow! That is a scary amount in my opinion.  Being diagnosed with a mental health disorder is a very sensitive matter because a child’s mental and physical health is at risk.  Not only is the child affected by many mental issues, so are the families.  Being properly diagnosed is important and should be done adequately and over a period. Especially before labeling a child with a mental disorder.  However, I do think that many mental disorders can be misconstrued with a little more than typical behaviors.  For instance, a 2-year-old can show more aggression than a “typical” toddler would and that raise concern for some parents.  Even though the child may just be acting out a little more.  Therefore, I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer to should or should we not diagnose young children.  If the child is diagnosed with a mental disability, he or she deserves the best medical treatment to address the issue.  Just make sure to proceed with caution with any medications that have not yet been approved by the FDA.
What age is “too young” to diagnoses, or is there no age limit?
According to Briggs, (a Psychologist who works in a healthcare center based in the South Bronx) screaming babies as early as six months for any signs of mental issues is important.  Briggs agrees with many other experts that say waiting until Kindergarten is too late for diagnosing a child (Cardoza, 2016).  Which sounds too young in my opinion, although I’m not an expert.  Young children are still developing and trying to find themselves (in terms of behaviors), therefore, I do think many children are being diagnosed too young.  It seems to be an issue affecting their overall development.
What are the cons to giving diagnoses too young to children?
The cons to diagnosing too young are the classification that is put on the child.  Classifying a child with a mental disorder can make the child feel that he or she is broken, different, or not normal.  Which comes with its own set of problems.  To also allocating mental health drugs, that are meant for adults who suffer from mental health issues and not yet approved for a child’s consumption.  Which is scary and can also have negative consequences for children.  Children who have been diagnosed too young can isolate themselves and become depressed, worsening their condition.

EVALUATE THE ETHICAL OUTCOMES THAT RESULT FROM THE POSITION YOU TAKE ON THE ISSUE AND EXPLAIN HOW THOSE OUTCOMES WOULD INFLUENCE SOCIETY AND CULTURE.

EVALUATE THE ETHICAL OUTCOMES THAT RESULT FROM THE POSITION YOU TAKE ON THE ISSUE AND EXPLAIN HOW THOSE OUTCOMES WOULD INFLUENCE SOCIETY AND CULTURE.

The Final Research Project will present research relating the responsibilities of a critical thinker to contemporary society. In this assignment, you will do the following:

  • Research one aspect of a contemporary social problem.
  • Define the problem.
  • Propose a possible solution for the problem.
  • Create an argument that supports your thesis position. You should take on the perspective of a critically thinking researcher. The argument must present a thesis statement and evidence to support the thesis statement.
  • Evaluate the ethical outcomes that result from the position you take on the issue and explain how those outcomes would influence society and culture.
  • Interpret statistical data from at least two peer-reviewed scholarly sources.
  • Evaluate evidence using the following standards: validity, reliability, and bias related to the chosen topic and accurately identify strengths and weaknesses.

Research and Define the Problem

You must take on the perspective of your major field of study and explain in your paper what that perspective is and how it informs your view of the topic. The topics listed above are far too broad to write about in 10–12 pages (3,300–3,900 words). Instead, you must choose a narrowly defined thesis and approach it from the perspective of your field.

Example: If you are an economics major, and you are interested in immigration reform, you should approach a very specific aspect of immigration reform through the lens of economic theory and practice. A specific thesis question would not be, “How does illegal immigration influence the U.S. economy?” One could write thousands of pages on such a topic. Instead, a better question would be, “How do illegal immigrant hotel workers in Chicago impact the economy of Northern Illinois?” You would then want to do the research and determine the positive and negative impacts they have, ultimately trying to conclude how illegal immigration in this area should be approached ethically.

How to Hone Your Thesis: It is important that you start your research early in this course. Try to find the most important contemporary questions and theories in your field of study and then align the most important questions with a very specific aspect of the general topics above. For example, if you are a psychology major, you might want to start thinking within the realm of healthcare reform or aspects of mental health and criminality in the prison system.

Your Argument You must present a complete argument, including a major claim with at least five points of evidence, information, or data that will prove the claim.

  • The thesis statement must be
    • A clear, simple declarative sentence as the first or last sentence in the opening paragraph of the essay.
    • Of such a nature that it can be substantiated, corroborated, verified, and proved through appeal to primary or secondary academic research source materials.
  • The introductory paragraph must
    • Present the thesis statement, an explanation for the importance of the topic, and its relation to the student’s field of study.
  • Beliefs, opinions, and personal opinions must not be introduced at any point in the essay.
  • All beliefs and opinions should be supported with academic evidence. Sweeping generalizations with no supporting academic evidence do not reflect adequate critical thinking skills.
  • Do not include rhetorical questions in your essays. All the questions that are pertinent to your project need to be answered in your essay and your answers again need to be supported with evidence from peer-reviewed journal articles and academically published books.

Attributes of Good Critical Thinking in Papers

  • Your paper should include academic sources that explain multiple sides of the issue.
  • The evidence that you use should come from high-level researchers engaged in your field of study.
  • Your interpretations of the evidence should be objective and state the conclusions and theses presented in the evidence clearly and fairly.
  • Your paper should place the various forms of evidence in relation to one another and demonstrate why one form or perspective is stronger than the other positions that one could take on the issue.
  • Your paper should point out the limitations of current evidence and attempt to indicate areas for future research.

Ethical Outcomes of the Position You Take

After you have defined the problem and created an argument about how one ought to respond to the issue, you need to explain the ethical outcomes of the position you have taken. This should again be in relation to the field of study in which you are working. There might be different ethical outcomes that result from your analysis. For example, going back to the example issue above, from an economic standpoint, illegal immigrants might contribute positively to the economy of Northern Illinois in a specific number of ways. Thus, an economist who believes that positive impact to the economy is the greatest good would say that one should promote the use of illegal immigrants. However, because these workers are often paid less than others and eliminate jobs that could be done by residents of Chicago, there could be other negative ethical outcomes that would outweigh the positive impacts to the economy. It is your goal to draw out the ethical implications of your thesis and explain the underlying rationale that is the foundation for your claim that one action is better than another.

  • Critical thinkers are those who can outline the positive and negative ethical impacts of their positions. In addition, they are able to provide a rationale for why they believe a specific position is the right position, even when it leads to negative outcomes.
  • Critical thinkers are also able to be honest and objective about the limitations and gray areas that pertain to their theses.

Functional Areas for Nursing Informatics”

Question description

BY DAY 3

Post the key functional area(s) of nursing informatics relevant to your current position or to a position this area(s) is relevant. Identify the TIGER competencies you selected as essential to your functional area(s) in which you need improvement. Describe why these competencies are necessary and outline a plan for developing these competencies. Include any resources that are available to you within your organization and the ways you might access those resources. Assess how developing nursing informatics competencies would increase your effectiveness as a nurse.

Week 2: Core Competencies and Scope of Practice in Nursing Informatics

The continued integration of information technology within the nursing profession is resulting in the development of nursing informatics as a distinct specialty. As with other specialty areas, nursing informatics has unique foundational documents, concepts, competencies, and functions. How might information technology competencies pertain to your professional practice?

This week focuses on the core competencies and scope and standards of practice in nursing informatics. If you are not specializing in nursing informatics, some functional areas will be more relevant to your professional role than others. Therefore, this week you will analyze the key functional areas of nursing informatics and consider competencies that would be useful in your professional role. In addition, you assess how information technology skills can improve nursing practice.

Discussion: Nursing Informatics Competencies

Today’s fast-paced health care environment demands nurses to be skilled not only in their clinical practice or specialty area but in the use of technology tools that improve practice and lead to better patient care. Basic and advanced technology competencies are required and expected as technology increasingly touches and changes the job of every nurse. Numerous organizations, including the American Nurses Association (ANA), the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), and Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), have developed nurse-specific technology competencies. The challenge for nurses is to identify both needs and training opportunities.
In this Discussion, you identify the role informatics plays in your professional responsibilities. You pinpoint personal gaps in skills and knowledge and then develop a plan for self-improvement.
To prepare:

  • Review Nursing Informatics: Scope and Standards of Practice in this week’s Learning Resources, focusing on the different functional areas it describes. Consider which areas relate to your current nursing responsibilities or to a position you held in the past. For this Discussion, identify one or two of the most relevant functional areas.
  • Review the list of competencies recommended by the TIGER Initiative. Identify at least one skill in each of the main areas (basic computer competencies, information literacy competencies, and information management competencies) that is pertinent to your functional area(s) and in which you need to strengthen your abilities. Consider how you could improve your skills in these areas and the resources within your organization that might provide training and support.

BY DAY 3

Post the key functional area(s) of nursing informatics relevant to your current position or to a position you recently held, and briefly describe why this area(s) is relevant.

Learning Objectives

Students will:
  • Analyze the key functional areas of nursing informatics
  • Formulate a personal plan to improve health information technology competencies appropriate for your professional role
  • Assess how information technology skills can improve nursing practice
