SPSS Homework 6 Instructions:
Prediction – Bivariate Linear Regression
Part 1:
Note: The z-scoring method used in the practice data file is covered in Lesson 19 during PSYC 354. You will use raw data for all homework exercises, with no need to convert to z scores.
Green & Salkind: Lesson 33 – Exercises 1, 3–4
The following helpful tips are numbered to correspond with the exercise number to which they refer:
1. Use raw scores, not z scores, in the regression analysis. (3 pts for output and 2 pts each for a–e)
3. Write the answer to the last part of this question beneath your graph, in sentence form. (3 pts)
4. All homework Results sections must follow the example given in the SPSS tutorial presentations and the Course Content document “Writing Results of Statistical Tests in Current APA Format†(note: you do not have to refer to a figure). Note: The statistical statement for a bivariate linear regression must include at least the equation of the line and the confidence interval for the slope (the second row under Confidence Intervals in the output), as well as a decision about the null hypothesis. (3 pts)
Part 2:
1. An educational psychologist is interested in whether after-school clubs improve performance in certain activities. Specifically, she wants to evaluate whether the number of hours spent per week in an after-school chess club predicts the score in a year-end district-wide chess tournament. She collects the number of hours spent per week by each child in the chess clubs of 3 different schools. She then records their scores at the year-end chess tournament, where a win is worth 3 points, a draw is worth 1 point, a loss is worth 0 points, and each child plays multiple games. She compiles the information in the table below. Conduct a bivariate linear regression to analyze the research question.
The steps will be the same as the ones you have been practicing in Part 1 of the assignment—the only difference is that you are now responsible for creating the data file as well. Remember to name and define your variables under the “Variable View,†then return to the “Data View†to enter the data.

a) Paste the SPSS output. (3 pts)
b) Construct a scatterplot of the relationship between the 2 variables. Plot the regression line on this graph. (3 pts)
c) Is hours in after-school chess club predictive of chess tournament scores in this sample? Write a Results section in current APA style describing the outcome. All homework Results sections must follow the example given in the SPSS tutorial presentation and the Course Content document “Writing Results of Statistical Tests in Current APA Format†(note: you do not have to refer to a figure). The statistical statement for a bivariate linear regression must include at least the equation of the line and the confidence interval for the slope (the second row under Confidence Intervals in the output), as well as a decision about the null hypothesis. (3 pts)
Part 3: Cumulative Homework
1. A neuropsychologist is assessing the relationship between visual attention levels and the ability to multitask in a sample of 14 patients. He administers a visual continuous performance test to assess levels of visual attention on which scores can range from 1 to 20: a high score indicates better visual attention levels. He then has each patient complete a task that requires high levels of multitasking. Errors are counted, and a high number of errors indicates poor multitasking skills. The scores are listed in the table below. Choose the correct test to analyze this question, set up the SPSS file, and run the analysis. Follow the directions under the table below.

Background Information The West Virginia University Mountaineers have gone undefeated during the 2015 football season and will be playing for the National Championship on Monday, January 11, 2016 in Glendale, Arizona. They will be playing the LSU Tigers. WVU wants to promote this accomplishment by hosting a team send-off celebration/rally at the WVU Coliseum prior to the team departing Morgantown on Saturday, January 2. Special guests will include WVUs president, the football team, coaching staff, the WVU marching band and multiple special celebrity guests. The event is free and open to the public. It will begin at 1:00 PM and run until approximately 3:00 P.M. Your press release should speak to a number of publics, including fans, students, faculty, staff, and the general public. You may make up any facts about the seasons statistics and the event details. Assignment Instructions Write a general press release announcing the football teams advance to the National Championship and the send-off rally. Your press release should be no longer than one page. See the assignment guidelines for format specifications. For the purpose of this assignment, you have permission to create quotes from staff members and special guests. Please use correct AP (Associated Press) style. As WVUs public relations specialist, you can decide when and where to host the dinner, and it’s up to you to come up with creative incentives you will use to get the public to attend the event. Have fun with this assignment and think big. Assignment Guidelines Press Release Use 12pt. Times New Roman font. Follow the format guidelines for news/press releases and media advisories in this weeks lesson or in the assigned reading from your textbook. Spell check and proofread your materials before submitting them. Be sure to watch for grammar and spelling errors. Attachments area
Read Chapters 9-10 and the Monroe Doctrine. Once all reading is complete, respond to the following items:
You are required to submit an initial posting that addresses the items above. You are also expected to respond to the posting of at least one other student. Your response should address why you agree/disagree with their posting.
Minimum word counts for this assignment are as follows: Initial Post = 200 words; Peer Response = 100 words. These are minimum word counts–you can write more. Be aware that only your answers count to the word counts (retyping questions into your post does not count toward the word count).
Be sure that you fully address the questions, providing detailed analysis and historical context. Do not cut-and-paste from sources, but instead use your own words to answer in both the initial post and peer response.
READ CAREFULLY AND AND ANSWER EACH QUESTION IN PARAGRAPH(4 TO 5 COMPLETE SENTENCES) FORM. PLAGIARISM REPORT MUST BE ATTACHED!!!!!!!!! ORIGINAL WORK
Assume that Midas is deciding whether it should add engine tune-ups to its existing product line. Top management has called you in as a consultant to help it to analyze this opportunity. The first thing the consultant asks you to do is read the Midas and Genoa Ford Feature in this chapter.
***** Real World Scenarios: Midas and Genoa Ford, Same Service but Not Competitors*********
A typical Midas shop and the service center at a dealership such as Genoa Ford provide the same service, but are they really competitors? Each has adopted different strategies and tailored their operations to fit those strategies.
Midas is in the automotive repair business. Its strategy is to provide a narrow range of services at low cost. National advertising is used to develop wide geographical coverage. The company is not a full service repair shop, but concentrates on muffler repair, brakes, and shock absorbers. It is successful because it quickly delivers quality services at low cost. How are operations important to Midas?
As part of a Ford dealership, Genoa Ford’s Service Center provides a full line of automotive repairs. In contrast to Midas, this service operation competes without advertising or national appeal. It also has a different operating strategy. In order to maintain the dealership, Genoa Ford must be able to satisfy a wide variety of customer needs. It offers transmission work, body work, engine repairs, and other tasks in addition to working on brakes, shocks, and mufflers as Midas does. Genoa Ford designs its operations to match its objectives.
As a result of its strategy, Genoa Ford has higher costs and charges higher prices than Midas does for comparable work. When a car needs routine exhaust system work, it can be taken to a national chain such as Midas. Generalists, such as Genoa Ford, can complete more difficult jobs and repair work that is paid for by Ford as part of its new car warrantee program.
Management is concerned about the impact that this new service will have on existing operations. Presently, the company has a policy that customers will not wait longer than 30 minutes for muffler service. If reaction to the new service is great, the shops may not have the capacity to satisfy demand. Assume that most of the shops are very profitable.
