Assignment-1-1-Conflicting-Viewpoints-Essay-Part-I

  • Assignment 1.1: Conflicting Viewpoints Essay – Part I
    Prewriting
Due Week 2 and worth 30 points

When looking for information about a particular issue, how often do you try to resist biases toward your own point of view? This assignment asks you to engage in this aspect of critical thinking by playing the “Believing Game.” The Believing Game is about making the effort to “believe” – or at least consider – the reasons for an opposing view on an issue.

The assignment is divided into two (2) parts.
In Part I of the assignment (due Week 2), you will first read a book excerpt about critical thinking processes: “The Believing Game and How to Make Conflicting Opinions More Fruitful” at http://www.procon.org/sourcefiles/believinggame.pdf. Next, you will review the Procon.org Website in order to gather information. Then, you will engage in prewriting to examine your thoughts.
Note: In Part II of the assignment (due Week 4), you will write an essay geared towards synthesizing your ideas.

Part I – Prewriting: Follow the instructions below for this prewriting activity.  Use complete sentences and adhere to standard rules of English grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling.
    1. Select one (1) of the approved topics from the www.procon.org Website and state your position on the issue.
    2. From the Procon.org Website, identify three (3) premises (reasons) listed under either the Pro or Con section – whichever section opposes your position.
3.For each of the three (3) premises (reasons) that oppose your position on the issue, answer these “believing” questions suggested by Elbow:

    1. What’s interesting or helpful about this view?
    2. What would I notice if I believed this view?
    3. In what sense or under what conditions might this idea be true?”

The paper should follow guidelines for clear and organized writing:

    • Include an introductory paragraph and concluding paragraph.
    • Address main ideas in body paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting sentences.
    • Adhere to standard rules of English grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

    • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA Style format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
    • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

    • Identify the informal fallacies, assumptions, and biases involved in manipulative appeals and abuses of language.
    • Create written work utilizing the concepts of critical thinking.
    • Use technology and information resources to research issues in critical thinking skills and informal logic.

The pertinent aspects of the readings and lecture and how in your opinion things have or have not changed over the past few decades discussion help

This is the first of two sections that examines depictions of race in popular culture. Race is a huge, huge issue in our society. It is so big, that we have a difficult time understanding it, or even in fully conceptualizing all the ways in which it pervades our culture. One of the ways to gain some access to understanding it do what come critics have called “personalizing the issue.” That happens when we translate large and impersonal problems into smaller, more manageable images, stories, and texts.  The personalization of race relations in America is often done textually through discourse or narrative. Instead of trying to tackle the entirety of any large public problem, someone can instead look for ways to discussed the problem through, for example, music, television, books, film, plays, academic articles, college courses, and so forth. In this section we have looked at a film and several articles and interviews to see how other people have expressed their personalization (or dissection of large, intractable, and dizzyingly complex issues through stories) of the topic of race in America.

    Assignment 1

In your own words write a summary of about 750 words that describes the pertinent aspects of the readings and lecture and how, in your opinion, things have or have not changed over the past few decades. Be sure to draw on specific ideas from the readings and lecture in your response, and use your own examples to elucidate your points. Try to make connections that might be common across all the readings, and use your reading notes to help frame your response.

Post your response to the “6.0 Race I readings responses” section of the discussion board.

**Note, if the discussion board items appear out of order, you can click on “Forum” at the top to order them.

    Assignment 2

Drawing on the “Things to think about when watching the film” section in the film folder, write a roughly 750 word response to the film for this section. The specifics of your response are up to you, but you should try to draw together ideas discussed in the readings and the lectures and compare them to issues covered in the film.

    have-an-idea-about-what-we-want-to-change-and-how-we-want-to-accomplish-that-change-2-3-pages-management-homework-help

Watch all four videos that are posted in the assignments for this week. This week we are discussing implementation and communication.

While virtually all of us have an idea about what we want to change and how we want to accomplish that change, we seldom create a comprehensive plan that includes implementation steps. Far too often, a well conceived change initiative ceases to exist altogether, because the change agent has not appropriately addressed many of the barriers to successful implementation. From poor communication to change resistance to poor design to lack of training, implementation barriers need considerable attention from change agents. What part do leaders play in implementation? The videos for this discussion have some clues about why change initiative implementation may fail. Some of those barriers are addressed in your text, but others are found in many other places.

There is no greater barrier to change than communication issues. There is no greater skill than communication that can cross levels, depth, scope, and breadth of people and information. People who are adept communicators quite literally link the world for everyone else. Using the video above, think about the communication that Mr. Laipply uses as he works through his time on stage. Did you understand it? Did you laugh with the audience? What was the language that he used? Why did you understand it? How does culture feed into understanding this video? How does empathy impact our communication skills? Is empathy its own language? Do change agents need a great deal of empathy? Explain. Is there value in outrospection in change management? All of the questions here are presented to help create a framework for your answer. They do not require explicit and listed answers.

    Controversy-Culturally-Bound-Syndromes-and-Symptoms-psychology-homework-help

For this discussion, you will enter into another conversation on an ongoing controversy and contemporary issue regarding abnormal psychology. Specifically, are there psychological syndromes and symptoms that appear only in certain cultures? Because this topic is not covered explicitly in your course textbook, it is absolutely essential to read the Wen-Shing (2006) article, guidelines 1, 2 and 5 from the “Guidelines on Multicultural Education, Training, Research, Practice, and Organizational Change for Psychologists,” and your instructor’s initial post before responding.

As you enter into this conversation, carefully consider the historical information you read regarding the discovery and identification of symptoms and syndromes that could potentially be bound to specific cultures. Then, take a moment to relate this historical background to the current ethical, clinical, and social considerations when working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Interpret specific symptoms and syndromes as they relate to abnormal behavior from a culturally sensitive standpoint. Be sure to integrate knowledge of any appropriate cultural considerations psychologists must be aware of when working with individuals from backgrounds dissimilar to their own

    Must be 450-550 words.

â—¦  The full-text version of this article can be accessed through the Sage Journals database in the Ashford University Library. This article describes many syndromes and symptoms that appear to be found only in specific cultures
