By now, from your textbook readings and lesson, you should have a firm grasp on the different types of human resource values and strategies that are commonplace in the workforce. From this information:

1.Create and briefly describe a fictional large company of your choice. This is your company and it should preferably be in your current or desired future industry.

This company and the HR mission statement you create will be used as a foundation for future assignments in this course.

2.Compare and contrast the below sample mission statements. Evaluate them for overall effectiveness.

3.Use your analysis to write your own HR mission statement for your

Fictional company. Consider the following questions when evaluating and formulating your mission statement:

·Why does your HR function exist? What do you want for your customers and how can HR provide that?

·Who are your customers and what can you do for them that will enrich their lives and contribute to their success, both present and future?

·What image of your function do you want to convey internally and externally? Customers, employees and the

public will all have perceptions of your company. How will HR help create the desired picture?

·What level of service do you provide to employees and the company?

Don’t be vague; define what will make your service extraordinary.

·What kind of relationships will your HR function maintain with customers? Every company function is in partnership with its customers. When you succeed, so do they.

·What underlying philosophies or values guided your responses to the previous questions? Some mission statements choose to list these separately (as core values or vision). Writing them down clarifies the “why” behind your mission.

·Does your HR function’s mission statement describe and support what your company will do and why it will do it (the company’s core values)?

Sample 3: Human Resources Mission Statement It is the mission of the human resources department to provide the following quality services to the employees of

[Company Name]:

·retention of valuable employees;

·training, development, and education to promote individual success and increase overall value to the

organization;

·a safe and healthful working environment;

·inspiration and encouragement for a high level of employee morale through recognition, effective communication,

and constant feedback; and

·resources for administering benefits, policies, and procedures.

These services are achieved through a teamwork philosophy that is inspired through effective organizational skills,

proactive efforts, and maintaining a balance between professionalism and the ability to have fun!

Dale and Mike Parak were twin brothers and best friends. They spent their entire lives looking out for each other’s interests. While growing up, the two were inseparable. They played sports together, double-dated frequently, and attended the same university. They grew closer as they aged, they got married at about the same time, and eventually, both were divorced. After they retired from their jobs, they decided to live together to save money, and they still enjoyed each other’s company.

When he was 70 years old, Mike was diagnosed with cancer. Doctors predicted that he had about 6 months to live. The brothers agreed that Mike should not suffer. Mike and Dale wrote and signed a note stating that they decided to commit suicide. Dale broke 20 tranquilizers into Mike’s evening meal and watched as he ate it. Yet, when Dale checked on Mike one hour later, Mike was still alive. Dale panicked. He took a .38-caliber revolver from his desk and shot Mike, killing him instantly. Dale then went into the kitchen and took a handful of tranquilizers. He did not die. He awoke the next morning as somebody pounded on the front door. It was a neighbor who, seeing that Dale was dazed and confused, decided to call an ambulance and the police.

The responding police officer conducted an investigation, and Dale was arrested and charged with the premeditated, 1st-degree murder of Mike. The prosecutor, although noting it to be a difficult case, pursued the case because she thought that no citizen had the right to decide when someone should die. Dale Parak pled guilty to 1st-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to 5 years in a maximum-security prison. (Note: This was the lowest sentence that could be given to a defendant convicted of his crime.)

• What is your personal definition of “justice”? What is the formal definition of “justice”? Do you believe that “justice” was served in this scenario?
• What is the state definition of the charge that you would file as the prosecutor against Dale? Did Dale commit each of the components and elements of the crime? The elements for 1st-degree, premeditated murder are 1) the unlawful killing; 2) with malice aforethought; 3) of another human being. Explain how each element was or was not committed.
• According to the definition of justice you provided, was this sentence just? Why or why not?
• If you were the prosecutor in this case, would you have charged Dale Parak with any crime? With 1st-degree murder? Why?
• If you were the judge in this case, how would you have sentenced Dale Parak? Why?

As a quality analyst you are also responsible for controlling the weight of a box of cereal. The corporate tax rate structure applicable in Centervale is as follows:

MSC has an opportunity to invest in a project that is expected to generate an additional $55,000 of taxable income.

Compute the tax cost of this additional income for the following three scenarios:

• MSC’s taxable income before the additional income is $45,000.
• MSC’s taxable income before the additional income is $300,000.
• MSC has a loss of $5,000 before considering the additional income.

Show all the steps of the calculation and the final answer for each scenario. Compare the results for the three scenarios and comment on any differences.
