Instructions

Get the Map:

• Locate the appropriate topographic map from the United States Geological
  Survey (USGS) site, http://www.usgs.gov/.
• Go to Maps, Imagery, and Publications, and then, under Maps,
• Click on Download Digital Scans of Topo Maps. Then go to Map
  Locator. In the search box on right, type Washington, DC.
• Click on the square named Washington West.
• Then click on the bubble you created. Download: Washington West 7.5X7.5.

Find the U.S. Naval Observatory Location:

Navigate using the + and buttons on the PDF map and the hand tool.

• Zooming in using the + and buttons on the map itself gives very high resolution. Do not use the control key and mouse scroll button to zoom in. This map covers parts of Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.

Put a Dot on the Observatory and Label “Observatory”:

• Zoom in on the area that includes the observatory so that the vertical dimension on your map is about one to two kilometers. Each square on the map is one square kilometer. Using the annotation feature on the map, mark where the observatory is with a dot. Make sure your dot is a contrasting color so that a viewer can see it.
• Again using the map’s annotation features, create a text box next to the dot that says “U.S. Observatory.” Use an appropriate size font and color.

Prepare a Word Document with the Following:

• A screen shot of your map showing the U.S. Naval Observatory. The shot should include a vertical distance of one to two kilometers.
• The approximate elevation of the observatory.
• A paragraph describing the topography near the observatory. Include a large enough
  area to make your description interesting.
• Go to Google Earth and take a screen shot of the same area as covered by the
  screen shot of your topographic map. Put this on your Word document.

(Hint: take a little larger screen shot than your topographic map. Then resize and crop in Word to make it the same area as your topographic map screen shot.)

 

Compare and contrast the view and information available from the two maps/images, and answer the following questions:

 

1. What is the elevation of the U.S. Naval Observatory?

 

2. What does it mean when the contour lines are close together? What does it mean when the lines are far apart?

 

3. Generally describe topography of Rock Creek Park on the map. Describe how you know from the map what the topography is.

 

4. What is the lowest land elevation on the map? Why is that an easy question?

 

5. Using the map, what is the distance in kilometers (to the nearest tenth of a

kilometer) between the Smithsonian Institution and the Library of Congress?

 

(Hint: Use the scale at the bottom of the map. Use a ruler gently against the monitor. You cannot zoom in and out once you measure.)

Assignment 2: Leadership and Values

This exercise will help you to evaluate how values may impact leadership.

Read the situations outlined in Chapter 6 “What would you do? HIGHLIGHT 6.2” in your textbook. “Pasted Below”  Choose one and write a 4-6 page paper considering the following points:

1. How did you determine what was ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ about the situation?  What moral principles did you use to make that determination?
2. What do you consider to be the ethical stand and the unethical stand in response to the situation you chose?  What values did you use to make that determination?
3. If you were directed by your leader to take the opposite stance to the one you are most comfortable with, how do you think you would you react?  Would you be willing to take a stand?  What stressors would there be on your decision?  For example, if you were at risk of losing your job, would you do as you are told rather than what you feel you should do?

Here are several situations in which values play a large part in determining your response. How would you act in each one, and by what principles or reasoning process do you reach each decision?

• Would you vote for a political candidate who was honest, competent, and agreed with you on most issues if you also knew that person was alcoholic, sexually promiscuous, and twice divorced?
• Assume that as a teenager you smoked marijuana once or twice, but that was years ago. Would you answer truthfully on an employment questionnaire if it asked whether you had ever used marijuana?
• Your military unit has been ambushed by enemy soldiers and suffered heavy casualties. Several of your soldiers have been captured, but you also captured one of the enemy soldiers. Would you torture the captured enemy soldier if that were the only way of saving the lives of your own soldiers?
• Terrorists have captured a planeload of tourists and threatened to kill them unless ransom demands are met. You believe that meeting the ransom demands is likely to lead to the safe release of those passengers, but also likely to inspire future terrorist acts. Would you meet the terrorists’ demands (and probably save the hostages) or refuse to meet the terrorists’ demands (and reduce the likelihood of future incidents)?
• If you were an elementary school principal, would you feel it was part of your school’s responsibility to teach moral values, or only academic subject matter?
• Assume that you have been elected to your state’s legislature, and that you are about to cast the deciding vote in determining whether abortions will be legally available to women in your state. What would you do if your own strong personal convictions on this issue were contrary to the views of the majority of the people you represent?
