Action Tip 2—Go to a Good Place

Sometimes preparing to listen well means going to another location where you will not be interrupted, where it’s more quiet or comfortable. Where we listen can have an impact on how we listen. If your organization has physical barriers between you and customers such as a large counter or desk, consider inviting the customer to sit somewhere more conducive to talking. Executives sometimes run the risk of “hiding” behind their large desks, when coming around to stand or sit where the customer can comfortably interact make a better listening environment.

Find places where you are less likely to be interrupted by other people or by noise. Just the act of inviting a person to a better listening place can signal goodwill and a sincere willingness to understand.

For your current employer or any company for which you have knowledge, answer the following questions:

• What are two factors or forces external to the company that made them successful or was key to them being successful, now or in the past? These are meant to be big-picture forces affecting the overall economy or the industry as a whole (i.e., new regulations, major new competitor, new technology, etc.).
• What specific events could happen that could cause these two favorable factors to change, and therefore, negatively impact the company?

3. Describe the logistics steps that large mass merchandiser global supply chains use to ensure timely availability of inventory for routine and sales merchandise needs. This discussion must begin with the transportation from the foreign factory to its nearby port, and continue from there until it arrives at the mass merchandiser’s regional warehouses.
