ART Essay: Sculpture.

Choose any sculpture from the permanent collection of the Dayton Art Institute; this can include sculpture located outside. Admission is free for students using the permanent collection for assignments—bring your Tartan ID and the assignment sheet. For directions and hours, go to www.daytonartinstitute.org (General Information Tab)

Write a 1 page (350-word) essay comparing and contrasting ONE sculpture of your choice with ONE sculpture from your textbook, Mark Getlein, Living with Art, 10th edition. If you use sculpture that is not in Chapter 11, check with me first.

The sculptures cannot be by the same artist.  You must use material from your textbook, the lectures, websites, and the D.A.I. label that is appropriate (no Wikipedia).  Biographical information about the artist can be included if it helps the viewer understand the work of art. All your sources must be cited with both in-text citations and a sources cited list at the end of the paper. Information from the museum label must also be cited. Your essay must be double-spaced, typed, with correct spelling, grammar and complete sentences and must be brought to class when you take your final.  No extensions will be given.

Describe each sculpture carefully, and include all this information for each sculpture:

  • Artist, Title, Date (and caption number in the book)
  • Material and sculptural technique: modeling, casting, carving, or assembling
  • Size (life size, small scale, etc.)
  • For the DAI sculpture:  is it inside or outside?
  • Subject
  • How does the viewer physically interact with the sculpture?  Do you have view it from all angles or not?  What is the effect of its scale (size)?
  • Unique features
  • You must attach a proof of visit (map, ticket, etc.) to the DAI to the back of your paper.

Compare and contrast the two sculptures:  How are they alike?  How are they different?  Why? If they are from different time periods, discuss how the role and form of sculpture changed.

Conclude with a summary paragraph that includes your personal, though informed, reaction to the two sculptures.

Your essay will be graded this way:  format and length, 10%; writing, spelling, grammar and use of MLA style, 30%; research and original ideas, 60%.  Any plagiarism will result in a “0” for the assignment.
